When do you plan on subscribing to the online streaming service Disney+?

  1. Immediately upon launch, there's too much great content to avoid. Oh, and because.. STAR WARS.

With all the content, I expect that number to at least double for Disney. But I'd love to be proved wrong!

I would expect it to be higher due to A) The amount & hopefully quality of the new shows plus the Disney back catalogue & B) It’s Disney.
What is the cost of Netflix & other streaming services in the US for comparison.

I want to say Hulu is $7.99/mo and Netflix is $9.99/mo.

So yeah, I see Disney being at least $9.99, but probably closer to $12.99

In which case i think you are spot on it’s going to be at lest $9.99 a month with a price of $12 - $14 a very real possibility.

I’m now wondering how this is going to be launched out side the US.

I'm completely oblivious to all of this.. How much is Netflix over there?

I'd imagine online streaming services would be the easiest channel to make "universal" for any / all countries.

It’s about £7.99 a month nth but also have Amazon Prime at £7.99 but I get next day delivery on any amazon order with that oh & NOW TV which is £9.99a month SKY package for films & HBO shows ie BROADWALK EMPIRE & GOT so I’m pretty much maxed out now n subscription TV so hopefully this new Disney service will come out either as a delayed showing like The Expanse or as a add on package to my NOW TV package like I have to do if I want to watch major sporting events or weirdly kids tv shows like Disney XD.

So looks like we got some more details during Disney's quarterly earnings call concerning the streaming service. It looks like the plan is for the service to become available during Q4 of 2019, possibly at a lower price point than Netflix, and will be missing a large chunk of the Star Wars movies as noted in the quote below from Variety.

So the service will have all new movies that come out after episode IX, The Clone Wars, Jon Favreau's show, and I'm assuming Rebels and Resistance when it comes to the Star Wars content available. I'll be interested to see if the price point changes once they are able to reacquire the rights to all of the OT and PT movies and have everything on their service. It will also be interesting to see how Disney's 60% ownership stake in Hulu that they acquired from Fox will impact where content ends up going. I can imagine the streaming service will be entirely family friendly, while any movies like Deadpool, Logan or anything else with an R rating would end up on Hulu.

Thats unfortunate. Though, it almost works into their favor. Lure in people with a lower price, then add all the content you always planned on having and jack up the price.

Why would they not be able to add Solo to to the mix? Even though it's not even out yet, I guess they have already negotiated the licensing rights for that?

I'm assuming Netflix may be getting that one like they did with Rogue One and TLJ. It's not really the end of the world for me over this because I have all the movies on DVD/BluRay/Digital. What would be really odd is if Netflix still kept seasons 1-6 of The Clone Wars when this service launches, especially since season 7 will be on this streaming service.

Honestly, I really don't know if I will or not...difficult to see, the future is.

Initially, I figured that I would right away, but having not been very impressed with "Resistance", that knee-jerk reaction to sign up has mostly gone to the back seat. One thing that could me subscribe will be the new episodes of TCW..but for now that would be it. I'm hoping that Favreau's show does well with the Mando fans, but I'm not really one of them...and if I'm subscribed I'll probably check it out but like with Resistance, I won't subscribe for the Mando show either.

I'll likely subscribe for TCW, and may cancel when it's complete, but that's it...I own all of the movies, so I won't even need to subscribe to see them.

Just read this article from Variety and it seems like this Disney streaming platform will be a big deal.
    https://variety.com/2018/film/news/disney-streaming-service-2019-1202898412/

Iger suggested that this could be a lower cost option than Netflix when it is launched.

While it is fairly obvious that older Disney properties and current shows will be available on there, we will also have access to all of the Disney umbrella of channels and content.

Disney will own Fox, Fox Searchlight, Blue Sky Animation Studios, National Geographic, and a 60% share in Hulu.

The article references how Disney's sports giant ESPN used its streaming app ESPN+ as a testing ground for the future Disney roll out, and Iger seems to be pleased with how that went.

Currently, I use Hulu's streaming service and share a Netflix account. I'm hoping that Hulu customers can get a deal or can be grandfathered into the Disney service. If that happens, it will make too much sense for people who consume a lot of media throughout the year.

I'll probably start off what I currently do with Netflix. Subscribe for their trial, binge watch all the shows that I want to see and cancel it before the trial ends. If their streaming service has worth while content, i'll may subscribe but that is my plan for now.
