I think it all depends on how Ep VIII and the Marvel movie make out sharing the month of May in '17. It shouldn't matter, if someone wants to see either movie they're going to find a way to do it. Also, I don't think it really matters which month Star Wars is released its going to make money.

Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 is being released at the beginning of the month, while Star Wars Episode VIII is going to be released at the tail-end of the month. That's three weeks for Marvel to leave an impression, unless they want to slightly adjust the release date.

Me, I'd be more concerned with Avengers: Infinity War Part II and Star Wars Episode IX sharing the same release month. I get the feeling that they might shift Avengers back a bit and keep Star Wars as the first-week-of-May movie; I feel like they want that movie to cap off Phase 3, but I also think they're trying get the Inhumans characters into the mix before the gigantic crossover happens.

that's what I said in an earlier post I don't think guardians 2 and episode viii sharing a month is as big a deal as episode ix and infinity war part 2 would be

as I said in an earlier posts these 2 films represent climatic periods (note I said CLIMACTIC not ENDING) for 2 very huge investments by Disney they cant risk cannibalization between them

Here's something to consider: a Brazillian Disney event showed a timeline of films.

    Disney 2018-2019.jpg

It can be viewed in one of two ways. The first is that each tick mark represents a specific tentpole movie, so that Avengers: Infinity War Part I is the last tentpole movie of 2018 and Avengers: Infinity War Part II is the first tentpole movie of 2019. The second is to look at the image is to say that the top line is for 2018 movies and the bottom line is for 2019 movies.

The former theory states that there will be a Star Wars movie each year, but the order that MCU films will be released in is going to be changed, the latter way keeps the MCU schedule, but leaves 2018 completely free of Star Wars movies. Which way is correct is up to debate (I personally believe a little more in the former myself). Either way you look at the image, it can safely be presumed that Star Wars Episode IX is slated to be released at the end of 2019.
