So, the only thing we know about Rian's trilogy so far is that it will focus on a new type of story separate from the Skywalker saga in another corner of the galaxy. Even though no specific era has been mentioned, there are many who make the logical assumption that Rian's trilogy will take place far into the future or way back in the past. At the same time, many are hoping for it to take place in-between the current eras (PT, OT, ST).

If you were in charge, when would you have it take place?

To be honest, I would love for Rian's trilogy to take place sometime not during the run of the main saga. When exactly? It doesn't matter that much. My personal hope is that the specific timeframe, like a thousand years before Episode I or hundred seconds after Episode IX, etc. will only be hinted at, not explicitly staded. This would be an absolute for the fans - determining when exactly these events unfolded.

I think they should be a bit more specific than that unless they want to generate mass-confusion. What's the problem with outright saying "This takes place around 1000 years prior to TPM"? I'd rather have that instead of something very vague like "It takes place in the past, that's all we're gonna tell you, but the next two movies are gonna drop some more clues for you to figure out the mystery".

Honestly I don't understand the need of having everything clouded in mystery. Star Wars was never about that kind of mystery, the "mystery" we saw in the OT is an afterthought. When you look at ANH the first time, it is not a "mystery" whom Luke's father is. And then when you watch ESB, the reveal that Vader is his father comes as a huge surprise. But it's not like they're dropping hints in ANH telling you that "Luke's father is of HUGE importance to the story, but we're not telling you who it is - yet". That's the problem with Rey's parentage being clouded in mystery - while the eventual reveal will certainly be a surprise, it won't be an unexpected surprise in the sense that nobody saw the surprise coming - because everyone was waiting for it.

That sort of mystery belongs in a TV series, not a movie.

100% in the boat of Old Republic KOTOR-Era. Having a trilogy that has no connection to the main saga would be a great surprise, and would be a great way to expand the world while incorporating fan-appreciated Legends material. It would show great courage for Rian Johnson to avoid leaning on the crutch of the Original trilogy, and it would show that Star Wars doesn't have to follow suit with other installments of film franchises that are cash-grabs banking on nostalgia.

I would even be content with a trilogy happening centuries after the Sequel Trilogy, or something related to the Clone Wars era, because it would differentiate from the safety net of being aesthetically and/or dramatically similar to the Original Trilogy. I believe there is a lot of material there where a story ca be created that will give the audience something new and awesome!

Well, the key to future success, as I see it, is to be as aesthetically and/or dramatically different from the Original Trilogy as possible.

definitely in the "way before episode 1" camp. untying the new trilogy from the existing saga will free it up to do ANYTHING, and not just in terms of storyline and aesthetics. it will allow Rian Johnson almost unlimited freedom from fan expectations, which might very well be THE most important freedom to have.

the only concern, though, would be "how is this even star wars anymore?" if it's too far removed.

I see your concern, but I think the best example of how to do it is right in front of our noses - the prequels. No matter what some people may say about the acting and directing, there's no denial that the prequels are the best example of how to maintain the feeling of Star Wars while still making something completely different in terms of story and aesthetics.

Way back in the past. Let's establish the early days of Jedi and Sith. Majority of us are fascinated by this mysterious era and I feel more than comfortable with Rian telling us that story. To me anything else seems like wasted potential at this point.

I'm a fan of the prequels (AOTC notwithstanding), but they still have a ton of ties to the OT -- anakin/vader, obi wan, palpatine/the emperor, yoda, tatooine, C3PO and R2, chewbacca, etc. But a story with none of those connections, characters or locations is both a huge gamble and incredibly exciting.

The Whills. It's something that's never really been touched on. Rogue One gave us the Guardians of the Whills, but still no real back story. It could basically be a story of the origins of the force and the Jedi. Could be great!

I dream that he's doing a KOTOR series. But most likely, that is not the case.

I'd go for Pre-KOTOR or KOTOR era as that would bring in far more creativity and break the 2-3 Jedi and 2-3 Sith template going and open up the realm for far more running around on the screen as main characters. Yes, I realize we got some of this in the Prequel Trilogy, but there were still only like 2-3 Sith running around. Although, I officially selected sometime in the future after the current trilogy as I suspect that might be their plan or some kind of mid-point, in between the main trilogies trilogy. I wouldn't want the latter. I think they need to get away from stories so close in time to the ones we have unless it's a sequel to the current trilogies. No more prequel trilogies.

Yeah, I fully agree. Any kind of stories set between the current trilogies or very close in time before them would be better adapted as either anthology films or TV shows.

I actually think they won't be giving an indication in what time frame it will take place. 'A long time ago in a galaxy far far away' is enough if you really want to create something new in a different place and time.

Different place, different time. Lightsabers, Jedi, The Force, a new male protagonist, The Sith, The Dark Side, a badass antagonist, droids, spaceships, some side characters and some cool plot to the story. That's all I wanna live in. Simple, basic SW!

KOTOR or Pre-KOTOR.....however.....two MUST haves to be called "Star Wars"

    1. Opening Crawl
    2. Epic music in the style of John Williams, with themes that interweave through the 3 movies

I want to see the Sith/Jedi war play out. Both groups at their peak in number and skill.
