I liked the idea that was proposed on the most recent MSW podcast about him doing the story of the first Jedi. I think it makes the most sense plus... Last Jedi/First Jedi hahahha get it haha.

Honestly I like this too. I liked the idea of a KOTOR-inspired trilogy first, but that can always be explored later. After the ST is finished and the Jedi are no more, it would make sense to go back in time and explore the origins of the Jedi (and the Sith, however perhaps that needs its own trilogy in itself).

Definitely want the Old Republic era or earlier. The best action parts from Star Wars are lightsaber fights, it would be epic to have a battle that is just one big lightsaber fight between the Sith and Jedi. I mean imagine that.... a war between Jedi and Sith on the scale of the Clone War... with no clones or droids, just Jedi and Sith.

In my opinion, I want it to be the about the inception of the Jedi. You know, A 'Lord of the Rings' style Star Wars, but is Star Wars. Rian Johnson is going to be Star Wars' Peter Jackson, and that's really exciting.

The whole Prime Jedi idea sort of puts these ideas in a bit of a muddle though. If Snoke turns out to be the First/Prime Jedi then you are effectively telling his story. Meaning Rian would be bound to Snokes history. The story could still be epic but if Snoke has to be involved/mentioned it draws too much of a connection to the ST which may make it feel likely yet another prequel.

And the origins of the Jedi and sith along with a Kotor style story would be my preference.

This. Totally agree. I'd also love to see stuff about the Guardians of the Whills and some of the other force worshipers. I loved that aspect of Rogue One and I, for one, would love to see more of it.

But to respond directly I totally think the establishment of the Jedi/Sith makes the most sense. Hell, you could do more than a trilogy with that, I would think. That would be cool as heck.

I don't know if I'm interested in seeing it. I'll have to wait until I've seen "The Last Jedi" to form an opinion.

I don't think they will give Rian Johnson's trilogy to another director.

Its not an option in the poll, but I'm done with prequels. If IX is the end of the main Saga, I want to see Rian's trilogy expand the universe and take place in the era directly after IX. Start telling new stories in the galaxy's new status quo. Something similar to what the wave of Star Trek shows did during the TNG era. There's a whole galaxy of planets and characters to explore. And post IX he won't be restricted by the plot needs of taking place in the past. He could take the story wherever he wants. I want to see what he can do with that limitless approach.

Well, it isn't like Lucasfilm has had a great track record of keeping the director that they started with on any project thus far...

As a matter of fact it just would not be Rian Johnson's trilogy without Rian Johnson.

I see it as a Lucasfilm Star Wars Trilogy that they are letting Ryan Johnson take the reigns on. I don't think he has full rights or control over it anymore than any of the other writers/directors/producers of any other Star Wars film. As of now, he is just guaranteed the first Episode of the trilogy.

Above all, the new trilogy needs to feel, well... new.

Although The Force Awakens and Rogue One may have over-relied on Original Trilogy nostalgia, I believe that the films were a necessary step in the right direction. The nostalgic elements of the films did serve a purpose. Without them, the cloud of negativity or indifference surrounding Star Wars, stemming from the Prequels, would still be present. These films were like a reset of sorts, like a glass of water washing away a bad taste.

However, now there is no more need for such excessive nostalgia. The Last Jedi does take some big risks, yet I am concerned about many of the upcoming films. Standalone films for Han and Obi-Wan seem entirely unnecessary. I am also worried about J.J. Abrams's tendency to over-stuff his films with nostalgia, and how that could affect Episode IX. Obviously, I'm rooting for these films, and I hope they turn out great. But I do have some doubts.

The new trilogy is a chance to move on, to break away from everything that has come before. The announcement is encouraging: "Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored."

I want to see new things - new characters, new elements of the Force, new planets, etc. The galaxy is a big place! Why should the films limit themselves to a pool of the same recycled ideas?

Many people in this thread have suggested the early, or even ancient, Jedi as being the focal point of the new trilogy. While this is certainly an intriguing prospect, I think it would be more exciting to see other types of Force users. The Jedi can become dull when they are over-exposed (as in the Prequels), so why not move on and explore other sides and aspects of the Force? The era of the early Jedi should definitely be explored, perhaps in a standalone film, or even another trilogy further down the line. But I do think that Star Wars needs to diversify from just the Jedi.

What made the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back so great was the sense of infinity, of unlimited possibility. At the time, nothing else in cinema had done anything like that. With the new trilogy, Rian Johnson has the chance to fully, and authentically, recapture that feeling. I hope he succeeds.

It can be epic and galaxy-altering without needing to rely on the Jedi & Sith.
