Where are the familiar aliens species who are not essential characters? Is it Star Trek all over again?
I'm talking about aliens who have no name. Just background characters who have no lines and have no part in the story but are, nonetheless, a part of the universe. Twi'leks, Togrutas, Mirialans, Etc...

This is what happened to Star Trek. All the aliens who where not essential characters where unfamiliar aliens. Mr. Longface. Ms. Bigeyes.

I understand that it's a big galaxy. But humans are not the only widespread species in the galaxy.

If you're referring to the VF photo spread, I had the same feeling. But then I thought about all the new creatures that were introduced in the prequels. It seemed so odd back then, but familiar now. And for that matter, the vast majority of the aliens seen in the Cantina in ANH were never to be seen again.

So in my experience this is par for the course. We'll see familiar creatures, I'm sure. And these new aliens will become more familiar to us in no time.

It's difficult to gauge how many returning species should be included. If it's a familiar world like Tatooine, then I would expect a good number of familiar aliens. They could be trying to differentiate Jakku as even more "back-world" than Tatooine. But I look at this as an appropriate progression from Return of the Jedi. ROTJ had several returning species from ANH and ESB (Jawas, Trandoshans, Rodians, Snivvians) but for the most part they went crazy (in a good way) with tons of new never before seen aliens. It's confirmed that The Force Awakens has brought back at least Chewbacca, Akbar, and Nien Numb and the burping toad. I would prefer the movies stay away from becoming too bogged down by prior creatures, because there are so many of them, they might take away from new potential creations. With so much of the production devoted to feeling like the Original Trilogy (which I have no problems with) it's nice to see that perhaps we've only scratched the surface of what new alien life is in the Star Wars Universe, and that this is one area that could give this movie it's own identity.

Star Wars has to evolve. We will see new planets, new species, new ideas, etc. while at the same time still feel like we are in the same universe that George Lucas created.
Don't put so much emphasis on the minor. New aliens should be the LEAST of your worries.

I have a feeling this whole movie takes place in a part of the galaxy we haven't seen before. But that being said it wouldn't be a star wars movie without at least one rodian and twi'lek. And if luke is training new jedi one has to be from yoda's speices.

I'm sure a Twi'lek or two will pop up somewhere. But I'm excited to see new aliens, creatures, planets, etc. I think they drew inspiration from unused Ralph McQuarrie illustrations so I have a feeling that even the new aliens will feel somewhat familiar.

No sign of a Twi'lek at all so far. :(

+1 on the McQuarrie styling of some of the characters already seen in the Vanity Fair spread.

Every SW film since ANH has introduced more new species than what they have reused, so this is nothing new. It is just way to ever expand the setting.

This is my issue so far, I love Star Wars because of things like Ithorians, Wookiees, Twi'leks etc.. these aliens are what would make it feel like Star Wars to me, and if they just throw them out or make 90% of them new aliens, that will be an outrage and will make JJ's passion for SW look like a big fat lie.

30 years has passed on Earth too, how many more races do you see? I thought most of the aliens in that VF spread were pretty unoriginal.

It feels like Disney are trying to expand the universe so much that it begs for twenty more episodes.

Dead. They all died at the hands of The Reapers. If it wasn't for Commander Shepherd, there'd be nothing left....

I'm honestly not that concerned if there are or aren't "familiar" aliens. It's a new age, a new time, a new story.

That picture of Rey handling some junk. Reminds me of Anakin handling junkie in episode one.. Could this be a sign she is a Skywalker and not a Solo? But my gut tells me she's still a solo.

I'm not sure what you mean, you realize she would be Anakin's granddaughter either way right? Unless you mean she is Han's but not Leia's ....

    Familiar Aliens?

What about Admiral Ackbar and Niem Numb? We just saw like 5% of the entire movie so far (trailers, docs and pics). And what a bout the new great desings for the new aliens? Bullhead, Bob and all that supercools aliens at Maz Kanata palace (they look much more interesting than the ones in Jabba's palace in my opinion)?
