You know, do they ever explain at any point in the films how lightsabers work?

Because as anyone who has ever tried to have a lightsaber fight with laser pointers, I can tell you these things should be over in seconds, if not shorter.

I realize that it's explained in other material (like the bombers that everyone keeps ignoring) but is it anywhere in the films? :p

There’s tiny little men in there with big, funny looking, black helmets flipping switches. I mean, that’s how the Deathstar laser seems to work. Same concept. Right?

Ah, of course. But what about the tiny Jedi fighting inside the lightsaber? How do their laserswords work? :p

Only the tiny men in plaid shirts in George's head can answer that one.

    No.
Because this isn't Star Trek and the scripts don't waste time running through theoretical engineering explanations regarding what you just saw on the screen.
It's far outside the scope of the films to be concerned with that concept.

In TNG's writer's guide, Gene Roddenberry actually all but named Star Wars as exactly what Star Trek is not (Knights, Princesses, magic, psi-forces illogical equipment, and irrational plot lines that are written around interpersonal drama).

When Star Wars attempted to explain light sabers outside of the films, it was one of the most illogical messes I've ever seen as the first time I saw something a couple decades back in a book, it had plasma shooting through a focusing crystal, up to a shield container of a sort which then caused the plasma beam to route back into the hilt...something like a water fountain in a glass tube of sorts, but with plasma and electromagnetism and focusing crystals.

The amount of physical impossibilities in this explanation entirely dumbfounds the mind; starting with the idea that plasma as hot as a star can be shot through a focusing crystal and not destroy the crystal...then there's the whole idea of the blade returning back on itself and exploding the entire hilt.
That explanation was junk and I'm glad they tossed it and reverted back to "lasers" instead of plasma.

There's been quite a few revamps over the years to the workings of a lightsaber, but my favorite is the one in the films:

How does a lightsaber work? Someone presses the on button. Done.

    Cheers,
    Jayson :)

Sure it has been said it the 40 pages of comments on this thread but Rey/Chewie should have put a few rounds in the battering ram before they flew off.

It's been a a number of pages, so I figure, let's recap what's a plot hole and what isn't with a couple of quick examples.

Plot Hole: James Bond - Die Another Day
Reason: Direct Contradiction. This is about as clear of a plot hole in a film as it gets, as it uses a set of restrictions to press a sense of danger on the protagonist, and then violates those same restrictions to press a sense of danger on the protagonist - causing the restrictions, which were stated in the film, to only apply to the protagonist and no other object or character in the story.

Not A Plot Hole: Minority Report
Reason: There's nothing in the film which states that this extrapolation by the writer ever took place. The writer is assuming that the world and organization in Minority Report works by a logical set of security protocols, but that is not stated as having taken place nor is the action reflecting that such a case has happened. The action does not violate any shown or stated position regarding Anderton's clearance at that point, as the only stance on his clearance is shown by his wife gaining access to the jailhouse using his eyeball, which would suggest that in the world of Minority report, Anderton's clearance was indeed not yet turned off; at least in some capacity.

Plot Hole: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Reason: Paradox. We are given two pieces of information, and so is the protagonist, and the two pieces of information visually directly relate to a surprise threat to the protagonist and the peculiarity is entirely ignored by the characters in the film in spite of searching for peculiarities exactly of this nature. This is something akin to a the "Genesis Paradox" - that is: an omnipotent deity unaware of actions taken by the deity's subjects.

    Not a Plot Hole:
Reason: The film never contradicts any of its logic here; nor creates a paradox. Given that Doc did throw the car, he appears in the film to not expect Peter to die. Why he did not expect that is not explained, however, it was not relevant to the plot itself and not a gap in logic, plot, nor a contradiction or paradox. It just wasn't addressed one way or the other explicitly - like, how did Jabba know Leia was sneaking around (conversely, how did Leia not notice the trap?), but not notice when Luke overtly walks in. That's not a plot hole, that's just something not explicitly explained.

All examples in the quotes were written by other people at https://www.moviemistakes.com/best/plothole

    OK, carry on.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Leia had been in Jabba’s palace for hours, surrounded by his people. Luke just got there and went straight to mind-jacking. Not really analogous.
That’s the whole point of a trap.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a hole, but at least a "disconnect" - Luke's opinions, actions, and powers in TLJ. It just seems to me that the supposedly evolved Luke in TLJ is nowhere close to what the previous movies and background material(books, comics, games, etc) would have indicated he'd be like. He feels like a totally different character.

That said, I just finished reading "The Legends of Luke Skywalker". And that fills in a lot of gaps - not just for Luke, but for TLJ as a whole. But since most movie-goers don't read the books, most would not see the connection.

Even with the fill-in from the book, it still does not feel like the Luke Skywalker I have always known.

At the end of the movie, the first order lightspeed tracker is still there and the resistance reducted to the smaller part, this means that in the future, trying to escape via lightspeed will become completely pointless.

It's a new Star Wars paradigm like the weaponization.

The consequences in canon now that the First Order rules everything and can produce trackers at high volume are extreme.

That is why I stated they are not plot holes; not that they were. The reasons can be inferred and no actions contradict each other in either Spider-Man or ROTJ's case. It's just not explicitly addressed and there's no problem with that.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Since this concept of Hyperspace tracking works on computational power to quickly track a ships trajectory, the whole premise is flawed.

It was shown in this movie a ship (Millennium Falcon) can instantly dropout of Hyperspace then immediately jump back to Hyperspace without needing much time to calculate the next jump.

All that has to be done to defeat it is make a microjump then immediately another jump.

But then again Moore's Law apparently still applies to a Type 2 civilizations. They just will have to get Intel to design more powerful processors.
