    I think it would be cool to jump maybe 30 years ahead and the Jedi are firmly reestablished. Rey isn't the only Jedi Master. See a golden age return but come up with something for the heroes to do. Maybe it's not a galaxy spanning thing like the Empire or the First Order. Maybe there's a personal conflict with some Jedi and another group, be they force users, criminals or something else. It doesn't have to be "the whole world is at stake".

    Or, the main focus is a non Jedi. Have another Solo-like movie. If a Jedi must be included, make the Jedi the sidekick. A friend of the main character who tags along and is maybe conflicted about using his/her abilities to influence the outcome.

    My guess is they're reluctant to touch that time period when it's possible they could have future films with Rey/Poe/Finn. If they go forward it would be hundreds of years. That way they don't infringe on the saga characters.
