So many film that are made with the intent of not having a sequel, somehow end up doing well at the box office. For example, originally Iron Man was supposed to be a single film but due to the success at the box office it led to two more. There are many more examples but you get the picture.

So the question here is what do you do if people like these characters and R1 is a hit? Where do you go? Are they backed into a wall with this film? Do they post-pone Solo to have a sequel with these characters set between SW and ESB.
What do you do? Should it be only a one-off regardless? So many questions......

    What's Rogue Obe :p ?
I think if it is successful then they will add a better budget to the future spin offs .

As far as anyone can tell, the sequel to Rogue One will be A New Hope, but if some of the Rogue One crew survives the film one could easily see Disney/LFL doing another 'rebel cell aiming to misbehave' kind of story. As long as it doesn't become repetative, i.e. the Rogue One crew setting up the backstory to all OT movies, then why shouldn't Disney/LFL make more of them if they want and feel inspired too? There is certainly room in the Star Wars galaxy for independent stories; I like the idea of seeing what the rest of the galaxy is up to and experience conflicts from different point of views, and so on. Bring it on!

I still think any "sequels" or anything would be primarily based in comics/books/video games .

Even if it is a success (& I think it will be) I don't think they should make a sequel just let this film stand on it's own a great film as it could be tricky to find a place to fit a sequel into that feels natural & not just crammed in for a films sake

Plus iam not sure how meny of the cast are going to survive

Remember that this is Star Wars...while info agree with you, this movie could very well have a sequel but it would be similar to Lion King 1/2 in my opinion and I'm totally serious by the way .

I hope rogue one is a hit but only to tee up other spin off films that can answer questions/ link stories from the main story . I like the idea of them been separate from the force/ jedi / darkside

It WILL be a hit and they go in the precise direction they are already going. It has Vader, Tarkin and a fantastic Stormtrooper battle using real sets and costumes all while the Death Star lingers on the horizon. How fans react to a film cycle that goes prequel / sequel in alternating years remains to be seen, my money is people will love it.

I also honestly think Episode VIII and the fan's reaction to VIII will heavily inform the Anthology track on the long haul.

Yes Episode VIII will inform how the B-Track might go. I really believe that.

Early scuttle seems to suggest Yoda and OB1 still have a part to play in VIII, all while rumors swirl abot this POSSIBLE OB1 Kenobi / Boba Fett film. Meanwhile in Rogue Vader makes an appearance in Rogue One, look for more films that help keep Disney's involvement with a constant blend of old and new. The Han Solo film is a given I think.

The short answer? You get a Star Wars every single year of your life for the next five years. Enjoy.

The details of each film? My guess is the idea of an OB1 film is still very much a possibility, just a hunch. I'll go further I'll say the line:

"You can't win Darth, if you strike me down I'll become more powerful than you can possibly imagine," is going to be one we remember had a lot of meanings and I think after Rogue One the films on the B-track might elaborate further on that.

    Just a dumb fan hunch.

I think it greatly depends on how this story ends. If all the characters die, how do you make a sequel?! But, if they (or some) do survive, and Disney/Lucasfilm is chomping at the bit to make another story, then except a Rogue One at some point in the not to distant future. But, I think the thrust of the story is dependent on where this story goes, and where the novels, games, other stuff, toys, pets, producers and other random facts go.

Which makes me think they move Han Solo back and make a Rogue One II set between SW and ESB. Possible Shadows of the Empire type take to it

Huh. On paper I see that, but if they already have an actor for the young Han Solo, they will get to it quickly. If for some reason they can't find the right actor for him, then I can see them pushing it back and making Rogue 1.2. But I think they would move ahead with an Obi-Wan spinoff first.

i think that if R1 is a big success, that it will merely re-enforce Disneys commitment to stand-a-lone Star Wars movies.

whilst i don't think there would a follow up to R1... who knows, anything possible at this stage quite frankly.

if i could give one word of caution to disney/lucasfilm.. it would be 'ewok'. one bad film could de-rail a lot.

Sure thing. If it works it means we as an audience engaged with the characters. I do think they will make a second story featuring the same characters simply because it is a save and rational thing to do. Besides if the movie is good, we will be asking for it.

(Sorry for my english, I´m not a native speaker)

R1 will certainly be a huge success, but I don´t believe there will ever be a sequel.

Isn´t R1 designed to tell a completed story in just one movie?
    I can´t imagine a proper plot for a sequel.

If one of the main characters survives R1, you could consider a standalone movie for this character. Then that wouldn´t be a sequel, but a spin-off of a spin-off.

Another question comes to me: Wouldn´t it be confusing to have a sequel for an anthology movie?
I know people who thought R1 is episode 8.
I think connected spin-off movies will confuse those peolpe even more.

    Just my two cents.

There is no sequel to it. They steal the deathstar plans... They should be encouraged for 8, Han movie, and 9... and beyond... Spinoff's don't need sequels... Especially when we already know they succeed and where it's headed. That's like a sequel to Titanic. There would no longer be a Titanic...

The stand alone films remind me of the book tales of the new republic...where there are collection of stories in one book. I think there is another but it's called tales of jabba's palace. I'm sure there is more but I think of the anthology films that take place outside the Skywalker saga as tales of the galaxy far far away. But obviously they would have at least some links to the main story if done carefully.

To take this thread broader. I might be in a minority here, but i kind of want the current anthology line-up to do just "ok" box-office wise. I have an extremely bad feeling that if the anthology movies absolutely dominate/crush the box-office, they disney will just stick with OT and PT movies. After these announced anthology movies have had their run, Star Wars needs NEW content. Explore TOR, explore the "force wars" on tython etc.

Who knows? Rogue Two, for Death Star Two? The story of how all those Bothans died?

For some reason I'd prefer the Anthologies to focus less on the Force and the Jedi, I feel they should be saved for the main saga.

I'm not so sure of a Rogue One sequel, as that, to me, would be Episode IV: A New Hope.

I do have some other ideas for future Star Wars project, which I mentioned in another thread:

    To which I would add:
    • a possible live action film starring some of the Rebels characters, including possible Ashoka Tano

    Loving all the possibilities!
