There will be no proper sequel as I bet most of the characters die.

If this stand alone movie is a hit then i'd want to see more BUT... i want some director to look outside the box of what we know as Star Wars... i want to see an Old Republic move, lets go back 5000 years... lets forget the names Solo, Skywalker etc.. I want to see Sith lords.. Jedi masters, open up the universe and make new heroes and villains..

I love star wars but im over the characters we know... i want to see the legends... show me Revan

Whether it's a hit or not, and I believe it will be, Rogue One is a standalone film in every way. It's 'sequel' is A New Hope. Also, considering how film was presented so far, as war/heist/spy movie, the chances that many of the characters would die are very high. I can see them giving a surviving character a role in another movie (if the character turns out to be super, super, super popular) or perhaps a novel/comic, but not a proper sequel.

The way I see it, if Rogue One and Han Solo film are successful, Disney will be more inclined to explore other opportunities for standalone films - other eras in GFFA, other groups, other characters. This is the first a.k.a. 'safe' phase. If it works, Kennedy & Co. would go down more adventurous path which is what we all want.

I kinda see your side here, but I'd have to say that for me, it seems that if R1 does well, it gives Lucasfilm the freedom/confidence to explore the more out-there stories.

I kind of think the film will take care of this. I think many of the characters are going to be killed off and only one or two will make it out to deliver the plans. That said, I wouldn't put it past the studio to try and cobble together a sequel, however I don't see how it would fit in the timeline. If the film pretty much bumps up to Episode 4 the way most think it will, then I'm not sure what other missions the heroes would have. I mean sure, if it's that big of a hit and people survive, they could come up with a truly original script. But, as of right now, the charm of Rogue One is that it tells the story of how something we already know happened came about.

I don't know about sequels, I don't think it lends itself to direct sequels, as others have already said A New Hope is its sequel. Having popular surviving characters appear in other media though, that I'm down with. Lets say that Felicity Jones character survives, I'm totally down with seeing her appear in other Anthology films if it makes sense in the story being told.

As for what I want to see happen if this film is a hit, I want to see them branch out even more. Yes, this film will have some familiar characters like Vader to anchor it, but the main cast of the film will be new characters which I find exciting. Conversely, even though I'm going to see them and hope they will be great, I'm not nearly as excited about the Han Solo film or the proposed Boba Fett film. Rogue One's success should show them that audiences will show up for your movie as long as it has a strong story and characters, even if those characters aren't the heroes from the OT. I hope it spurs them on to go for even more creative ideas and time periods with their films.

Bring on the Old Republic I say! Embrace the high fantasy aspects of the Old Republic era and get a director with the same kind of vision that Peter Jackson had when he made the first Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Even that is just scraping the tip of the ice berg. There are so many interesting genres that they could put the Star Wars spin on. The possibilities are endless as long as they don't restrict themselves to a tiny sliver of the timeline with a tiny sliver of recognizable characters.

Amazing post. I agree, there is a lot of possibilities for potential spin-offs!

LucasFilm Phase One? I like the sound of that.

Agree. And we saw that with the book "Lost Stars". I was not really into reading it, but the story of these two perfect unknowns caught me by surprise!! I enjoyed having a different perspective of the events we already know by heart.

I don't think there'd be a Rouge One sequel...the sequel is episode iv. It's cool if they keep some of the new characters and not just kill them all off (maybe Jyn could be Lukes wifey or something), or have them in other spin offs, but the story is just stealing the plans, I don't know how they could make an actual sequel to it.

I think the business plan of Disney is already in. If Rogue One is a hit, they'll do more side stories but the Rogue One story is a deadend.

i think it would be great to explore other Star Warsy things with more one-offs.
they can even have interrelated characters/concepts, but they should preferably be complete stories in and of themselves (not ongoing epics).

one "trilogy" is already too much for me.
a cliff-hanger thats last two years is no fun (ha!) and viii will likely have one as well!

I don't think Disney/Lucasfilm as much interest in making sequels to each spinoff. If one does well, great! Then they might make a sequel in the near future, but it depends on what they already have scheduled. If Rogue One is amazing and the characters don't die (I'm thinking that may happen), then I doubt we will get Rogue One 2 before the Han Solo story, possibly even before the Boba Fett (if that happens), or anything else they may planned. I think we'll just have to wait several more years before we'll see more of the returning characters.

Such a gay name. I liked TFA a ton but that was one of those "stupid" moments. The name Snoke is borderline as well.

I don't think that they'd do a direct sequel per se (as in directly follow up on these events on this film). But, if the film is successful, and some of the heroes survive, then I can see the potentially using them in a future project. Sort of like a Mission Impossible kind of deal if you will, presumably stealing the DS plans wasn't the only secret mission that the Rebels executed during the war. Another standalone mission, just featuring some of the same characters.

Since Rogue One is based on gaining the plans of the first death star id like to think 'Rogue Two' would be about the death star 2 plans and all the bothans that died. Itd be nice to see more aliens in a star wars movie, and since we don't know much about the acquisition of the ds2 plans it coud have many surprises. I think it would be cool if ROGUE TWO ever happened they focused purely on the pilots. I want a story about Rogue and Wraith sguadron mixed together. Not the same plot obviously but that general idea, avoid the force for standalones

I agree with you my friend. Already there are alot of people confused by Rogue One. We hardcore SW fans know about anthologies and whatnot but alot and I mean ALOT of people are getting ready to go see Ray, BB8 and Finn and they are in for a big surprise. Though I still think the movie will be a huge success, I know many people are going to complain about the lack of Jedi in this movie as this is the first time in the history of SW that there will be a non Jedi film and seeing as the Jedi have been the center of SW, many will get bummed over this. For me though this is awesome as RO opens the door for great things in the future like a solo Bounty Hunters movie but you know how people are.
