SPECULATION Where in the timeline "Rogue One" is located? - Confirmed Pre-A New Hope

The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos.

Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side.
And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone Rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting…

Maybe right there?

 

i think between RotJ and TFA makes the most sense. either in that slot, well before the PT (like Old Republic style), or so well after the ST that they don't really touch each other's narrative. if it takes place during/directly after the ST it could make things a little too dense. although, who knows! i guess we'll see how TFA plays out...

 

I think Between ROTJ and TFA, if i had to guess it will be close to TFA time.

 

I feel there's a lot of potential between ANH and ESB, or ESB and ROTJ. Would be surprised if it was set DURING one of the 3 OT films.

I say that rather than post ROTJ because it would be a great excuse to have Palpatine and Vadet back on the big screen.

 

I suppose it depends on the state of the galaxy after TFA, but it sounds as though the Rebel/Empire war is going to enlarge so there'll be plenty of sandboxes for Tween-Sequel creators to play in. While there will have been lots of action between Episodes 6 and 7, a post-Episode 7 spin-off would be more topical and be able to make immediate use of the physical sets and models built for TFA.

 

I'm hoping for between TFA and Ep 8 to be honest. I want them to be like Marvel (Avengers) and have all their movies connected and in order.

 

I agree with Link Voxx, I hope they continue to concentrate on this new period.

I'm ready for the films to be moving forward rather than backward. I'm not eager to see the original characters re-cast with younger actors, nor do I want to see them skirt around the edges of the main OT storyline without crossing paths. Let the cartoons, books and comics cover that period of time .

Lucas wore me out with all the OT era tinkering. I'd rather just leave that alone.

Plus, I think it's a lot more fun for the stand-alone movies to play along side the current story line, where they can impact the overall story going forward - rather then making movies that have to fit into already completed story arcs.

While I hope it takes place between ROTJ and TFA, I think we can only exclude the time period between ANH and ROTJ. This is speculation of course, given the sparse info, but Rogue squadron only existed during ESB and Luke was the leader. While they can say that Rogue squadron always existed and was just absent from both death star attacks, I don't think it is likely. They could easily place it between ROTJ and TFA, but if they place it too far from TFA they lose the cross marketing benefits of the shared universe.

 

well this is supposed to be an original story right? but based on Rouge Squadron...ill say that it takes place in OT timeline before Jedi. more at steak i would think.

 

I choose between ROTJ and TFA, I want to see some stuff from this timeline.

 

I think they will start between ROTJ and TFA ending before episode VIII like the first Captain America. Remeber: Disney wants to give Star Wars the Marvel treatment... This way they will tell some back story for the new storyline and use the characters in ep VIII. 20 years after ROTJ could be the right time.

 

I hear ya about the prequel syndrome, Max. It's been a long time since we saw a SW movie in which the story wasn't moving toward a predetermined outcome.

That said, I don't think this would necessarily be a problem for Rogue One. There's no indication that this story has to connect directly to established characters from the SW saga, for one thing. They could do a story about elite Rebel/New Republic pilots as they deal with what's left of the Empire, and it may not have a thing in the world to do with the Skywalker storyline or anyone in it. If the Empire is fragmented and various wannabe warlords are jockeying for position, there could be some very dramatic events going down that don't affect the saga story.

So IMHO, they could very easily write a compelling story that takes place prior to TFA but that doesn't set up anything that ends up taking place in Episode VII.

It's a mighty big galaxy, after all, and it'd be nice to see that in action for a change.
