    Portsmouth, England. ;)

    I live on an island city that was first built two thousand years ago for the sole purpose of exporting war to other nations by sea. King Richard I gave Portsmouth its city status and distinctive crest over 800 years ago. Portsmouth was burnt to the ground by French invaders in the 1400s, was rebuilt and became heart of the British Empire's colonial expansion, growing larger during the Victorian era, then was almost destroyed again by Germans in the 1940s, eventually being rebuilt in the 1960's and 1970's with brutalist concrete architecture, some of which has now been pulled down and replaced with "modern" buildings that do not match the character of the city. There is a very strong "island mentality" character in Portsmouth and "mainlanders" can be considered as foreign as the French are. In more recent years, the city Polytechnic was upgraded in status to a University and now attracts a large population of students from across the UK and the wider world. The climate in Portsmouth is generally warmer than most other cities in the UK, with mild winters with very rare snowfall and relatively warm summers. However, Portsmouth is ranked as the third windiest city in the entire UK.
