Back in Nov. of 2015 in the TFA forum this question was posed by @master_shaitan , with a myriad of answers. Now, with two movies down, we can see that some of those choices are likely being ruled out pretty quickly. However, I noticed that in the poll, only 9.5% of fans thought there would be NO significant romance. We've come to expect it.

I'd say that the odds of this being a romance-free trilogy are substantially higher now. And that kind of disappoints me. One thing I always appreciated about SW is its ability to span the full range of the human experience, including things one doesn't always see in scifi- topics such as love, family & spirituality. SW has all of these things, maybe not always well-written, but they are there- and actually are essential to the story. No romance- no Darth Vader, no Luke, Leia or Kylo Ren.

So what about the sequels? At this point in the other trilogies, Padme and Anakin were married; Han had said "I know." We're nowhere near that with this trilogy which makes me wonder- is it needed? Or, is the lack of a substantial romance a convenient way to end the Skywalker saga?

Personally, I find the lack of romance refreshing.
I love that there is emphasis on friendships. Finn and Rey are a really beautiful little friendship. Poe and Finn as well. Heck, even the small nod to Holdo and Leia.

Yoda and Luke. Poe and BB8. Rey and BB. Luke and R2 etc

I think they tried with Finn and Rose but ultimately failed. I'm with @Sal on this one. I can live without it.

Well the PT romance led Anakin to become Darth Vader.

The OT romance led to the creation of Kylo Ren

Yeah Finn and Rose are the clear romance in this film, evident by the line early on by Poe "how did you guy's meet?", then obviously substantiated during the battle of Crait scenes. There is a slight romance edge to the Rey and Kylo angle but more ambiguous. Mostly the romance stories in the prequel trilogy and original trilogy didn't add much so I'm not searching or hoping for a romance sub-plot.

But of course Padme and Anakin is the cause for his whole downfall, and Han and Leia having Ben Solo is the whole cause of the second downfall, but I more meant the actually romance scenes themselves (forgetting the consequences that happen off screen and between films) aren't particularly necessary or important for me, Star Wars transcends these soap opera type storylines/scenes in general.

The PT romance also gave us Luke and Leia.

Maybe the take-away is that the Jedi were right all along and people who have the Force had better stay away from serious relationships. That's kind of sad, but maybe that's how this all ends.

Equally sad would be TPTB feeling there's no need for it if there's not going to be any progeny.

I was a fan of Rey and Finn in TFA, they had some pretty cute interactions.

The Rose sub-plot and romance is just so forced, I'm not happy at all with what RJ did with Finn. Hell, I would prefer Finn and Poe to Finn and Rose.

The only thing I never ever want to see, is Rey and Kylo.

I can't get the idea of a stupidly evil, moustache twirling Reylo baby out of my mind now. Like he's born and immediately kills his parents, burns down entire star systems, and then starts a new dark side empire that makes FO look like kittens. When asked why, he shrugs and blames his great grandfather for it.

With other romance, Finn-Rose feels forced to me too. I did find their dynamic sweet and if they'd just dialled it down a little and had hints of attraction between them, ending the second film with a longing glance than an outright kiss, and THEN a kiss at the end of IX after more buildup, I'd buy it.

With Kylo and Rey, maybe Disney will make them have hate sex at the end. This is the joke a French friend of mine (who hates TLJ) made after seeing the film.

I don't think there is time for anything BUT Rey and Kylo, though highly unlikely. I think it's going to end up with neither Rey or Kylo forming any significant attachments. Kylo still has to address his relationship with his mother. I think the writers will perceive that a romance would be a flaw in the metanarrative of Rey, and they won't do it.

And I, too, have a bad feeling about Finn.

For me at least the take-away is the complete opposite, the jedi order dogmatic views where wrong from beginning and Anakin had this wright for a change, Anakin's mistake was fear of loss, some kind of possessive attachment , not loving or marrying Padme. I think the fact that Anakin was forced to keep his relationship secret is in great part responsible for his downfall, allowing Palapatine to manipulate him in regards to this. I blame the jedi.

I'm going to follow @Sal on my response:

I personally don't find a need for it as the main characters are busy finding their way. The big romance folks were the "Reylo" folks that (no offense meant) utterly beat that subject into the ground like a fence post, and because of it, I'll be happy to do without it.

We've established so many relationships in this trilogy already that need to be moved forward and addressed that there (IMO) is no room for romance...in THIS trilogy.

There are just too many other factors that need to be addressed first...

If he'd had someone to confide in with proper love and understanding, apart from padme, he'd have had a much happier time dealing with the fear palpy put on him. But he couldn't confide in Obiwan because of fears of Jedi separating him from Padme, so only had good ole Palpy for support. Look where it got everyone. Dead.

I would agree. But we have JJ "Star Trek into darkness romance" Abrams and Chris "I can't write humans properly" Terrio. It's why I think Reylo might (might) happen, but more badly written than our worst nightmares.

That's one good thing about not being around for a year or so- I missed the fan wars! So when I saw TFJ completely unspoiled, I was thinking- "Hey, this Rey and Kylo Ren thing could go somewhere interesting." But there's no time for that, really. As you say, they are all dealing with complex issues already, and it doesn't fit the plan for Rey anyway.

There was no romance, but there was a crush, Rose and n Finn, there was a possible love at first sight when Rey met Poe, there was an infatuation with porgs to Chewie and a forceskype between Kylo and Rey.

I must sink ChewiexRoastedPorg (Or Chewropo), I'm afraid. The big gentle giant didn't eat his dinner in the end, because of Porg puppy eyes.

I don't buy Poe and Rey, they said hi and people are seeing romance there. I don't.

Exactly. There are SO MANY events that have/are transpiring at once that I think the translation/outcome of too many KEY things could be lost with more addition as the story is already VERY busy.

And hey...glad to see you back, neighbor!

As I said before: I am not sure if this ST deserves some.romance. I thinks is perfect just the way it is. The sexual atraction exist but it won't pass that little kiss that Rose.gave on Finn. The frienship in this trilogy has heavier weight.

There were romances, just very bad ones :
_ Finn-Rose was there, forced, rushed and disconnected from the rest of the movie
_ Reylo, pretty much happened, although was interrupted (hopefully for good)

But the worst may be yet to come, as the authors clearly opened the door for a Poe - Rey romance, even though they never shared a scene (!)

A shame, as a good romance would have greatly elevated this story : without it, this trilogy will feel incomplete ...
