Okay bear with me here as I am very tired. I am curious as to where are we as far as knowledge about plot, characters, the title, and other development issues as compared to development at this point in the run up to the prequel movies. Particularly Revenge of the Sith as it was the most recent obviously.

I remember on theforce.net boards that someone had seen tons of stuff and was doing mock up artwork of General Grievous a long time before anything official was shown about the character. It wasn't spot on but they knew things like his colour, his multiple arms, and that he wasn't a force user (we all had believed he would turn out to be Darth Maul up til that point). Also I remember that people had correctly guessed the title a few months before it was announced for RotS. Not that it was that big of a stretch to figure it out.

Anyway as a thought exercise I was just curious if anyone cared to fathom a guess on where we are in relation to firm character details, broad stroke plot overview, and maybe the movie title as compared to how far a long we would have been at a similar point in the PT. I hope this made sense.

it was different with ROTS.. yes there was loads of secrecy, fake leaks and undoubtedly mis-information from Lucas - but for the entire trilogy we knew who most of the main protagonists were and where the journey ended for (most of) them. we had a start and an end point for the whole trilogy and i think it was a lot easier to fill in the blanks.

as for where we are.. well i personally think that we know didly squat about ep7.

seeing as main filming is done and its at the stage of John Williams performing his magic, we don't know the character names of a single new cast member, and we dont know the role of any cast member.. including the original OT members.

quite frankly i'm amazed, and i tip my hat to JJ and Disney.

if i saw some fan art of Jar Jar in a lightsaber battle with a Hutt wearing a gold bikini - i'd probably buy into it at this point. i don't know what to believe anymore lol

i think this is a great post and i've been wondering the same sort of thing, only in regards to TPM and not RotS. does anyone have anything on that? the internet was a pretty different place back then, so i don't really expect the same level of leaks, etc. still, an interesting idea and train of thought!

Yea I hear you. This whole process has been shockingly thick with disinfo. My gut says though that we know a lot more about the story than we might think. I feel there are a few things that are almost certainly correct; The finding of Lukes Bespin sabre, Driver playing a bad guy, Luke in some form of self exile (or perhaps capture), Daisy Ridley and Han being the main protagonists, The empire existing in some form, some remnant of the Sith still exisiting. I feel all those are stone cold positive facts.

As far as title announcements, the PT film titles all seemed to be announced about 8 to 10 months before the films themselves. I recall various elements from the films, such as Jar Jar in TPM and the leaked Obi Wan/Jango Fett fight storyboards in AOTC, coming out sometime during the summer prior to opening day. Lucas also posted short little production videos on SW.com throughout the filming of AOTC, and possibly during the ROTS production too (I can't recall at the moment.)

IF LucasMouse LTD follows the same basic pattern, I imagine we should start getting more solid information on Episode VII by midwinter. However, I also wouldn't be surprised if they made an announcement or even released a teaser trailer of some kind during the holidays this year.

To echo Maximus, I have to hand it to JJ and company as far as how tight a lid they seem to have kept on this thing so far. We may know some things about Episode VII, but I think it's just as likely that little or none of what we have heard has any truth to it.

Yes you are right my friend. When I went to see TFA, there were tons of things that were already known which all turned out to be true. Apart from those you already mentioned, I also already knew that Maz Kanata was a wise sagelike being that was older than Yoda, that Snoke would appear as someone deformed and gigantic, that Hax was going to be the Tarkin of this trilogy, that Phasma was a lady, that there would be a cantina type scene, that Kylo wasn't a Sith and that Han would bite the dust just to name a few.
