Guinness. - The only Star Wars actor to be nominated for an Oscar for his/her role in the saga.

He created the role. He gave the movie some gravitas when everyone was expecting it to be a massive flop. I give him all the credit in world for taking that role when others would've told him that a goofball space movie was beneath him and his legacy as one of the greatest film actors of all time.

Guinness by a mile. McGregor was my favorite performance in the PT, no doubt. But he was still prone to a few wooden lines and a bit of overacting from time to time. Although Guinness did have far less screen time, I struggle to come up with any reaction or line reading that was anything but perfect from him. Meanwhile McGregor has a few rough moments. Mostly in TPM where it seems like he hadn't settled into his performance yet, and then some rough line readings in the other two that could be chalked up to poor take selection to meet the needs of the effects teams (a lot of the stuff on Kamino and Geonosis) or poor dialogue (He killed...younglings)

I went with Ewan. He had a much larger part to play with than Guinness, and (since they both did so well) that's what's pushed him over the edge,

Guniess by far. He deserved his oscar nomination for it very much. Its not like Ewan was bad, but Obi-wan's character in the PT was just simply uninteressting. No character developement, almost no personatily etc and all that for 3 entire movies. I think Obi-wan was the boringest character in the PT. Ewan had very few to act.

I really like Ewan, but Guinness by a million parsecs. Even if he didn't care for the material, he played it perfectly and made that character seem like it had lived too long and seen too much.

The biggest thing that I liked about arena McGregr is how eerily alike he looks from Alec Guineas and sin wonder if RHAT'S a big reason as to why he was chosen as Old BJ WAN Kenobi .

Guinness was the original obi wan and had to develop the character and give him life. ..Ewan did an amazing job recreating Guinness's character by acknowledging Guinness's obi wan's traits and perfectly recreated them in a younger version ........as people have stated ewans obi wan was the absouloute star of the prequels ......but Guinness's obi wan will always be the greatest for teeing up all that followed in the starwars story

I'm surprised the majority of people are picking Ewan over Alec.

I would choose Sir Alec's though I think Ewan did a pretty good job in the PT.

Since the two actors are representing Obi-Wan Kenobi at different times in his life, it feels somewhere between difficult and unfair for me to go with one or the other.

Historically, Sir Alec Guinness established the iconic character with such deep, humane, and wise qualities.

What Ewan McGregor did was to give Obi-Wan's character even more dimension as an active player in the Jedi Order's and the galaxy's fate: a necessarily more energetic and chronologically younger sense of an adventurer/protector (as opposed to Guinness' elder sage), a bit of an edge and with a hint of rebelliousness (with some tangible influence from Qui-Gon Jinn), some more capacity for humor, and more -- all while attempting to embody and echo Guinness' personality and vocal cadence.

Given the difficulty of all of that, and having to live up to the high expectations of fans, Ewan McGregor must be given much credit for filling such big shoes and giving us more reason to regard Kenobi as a true Master whose thoughts, actions, words, and influence would help pave the way for Luke, Leia, and most likely Rey.

I also think, the more that ice been thinking, that if you like Alec then you should automatically like Aswan because Ewan actually subtly tweaked his own performance as The PT went on to match Alec and even going as far as to wear a hair piece and all in ROTS .

Ewan was better. Not to say that Alec wasn't good but Ewan had more to work with since he was in 3 movies and played the second main character in them. HE also brought more life to the character by being funny and having a cool and interesting personality. I dint feel like Alec's ob-wan was as fun since he was pretty serious for the most part.

Both Guinness and McGregor were so good, I see no point in choosing one over the other.

ANH - Sir Alec Guinness nailed it as the old wise mage.
ESB - he's barely in it. And,
ROTJ - "... from a certain point of view," just still makes me feel kinda weird.

McGregor - For being the actor chosen he had a some big shoes to fill. Older Obi Wan was hardly a physical fighter. And I give McGregor a lot of credit. They're both good in their own way. But overall my vote would be for Alec Guinness. I like when Han says, "There's no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny ..." and Guinness just kind of gives him a *heh* expression.
