Help me friendly Star Wars fan, you are my only hope (of saving time and money)!

i originally picked Phasma, but with the caveat that you just read the current timeline stuff and skim everything on Parnassos.
then i realized that's not a recommendation and really the book isn't any good except the Armitage & Brendol stuff which is about 10 pages (if even that).

so read Leia of Alderaan instead.
it's fun and it's nice to see her with her parents and it has a good strong ending.

Does it tell me anything about the workings of The First Order (Phasma)?

    NO.

this is what's so maddening about it. like i said, there's fun stuff about Armitage and Brendol, and a little bit about the Stormtrooper program, but the rest is just a gaping hole of questions and a lot of nonsense about Parnassos that i couldn't drag myself up to care about. : o p

Did you read Rebel Rising? I have read Rogue One Catalyst after the movie came out, but it was atrocious?

i didn't make it through Catalyst, so I didn't try Rebel Rising, alas.
this stuff (i confess) is way outside of my genre, so unless i feel really tethered into the Star Wars universe with it or else i'm burning to see if it answers questions i have (and i don't have many), than there's a good chance i won't really like it that much.

so what you yourself may enjoy might rely on similar or comparable criteria.
did you read all the Aftermath books already? how about Guardians of the Whills?

Rebel Rising was great, I wondered how Jyn's relationship was with Saw and it answered allot of those questions, Guardians of the Wills is a great buddy book, and a bit spiritual to say the least. I love short stories and those 2 are my favorite of the new canon. I might pick up Canto Bight after I read TLJ novelization.

I did read Aftermath. It is enjoyable enough but nothing special. It gives a completely different different view of the post ROTJ Imperial stuff than that which is described in Lost Stars which is a bit of a bummer. I have also read Guardians of the Whills, which somehow tries to fit in Saw and Chirrut and Baze into a cohesive storyline. Rather dull. I'll give you my top 5 new canon books which I particularly liked:

    1. Lost Stars
    2. Journey to the Last Jedi: The Legends of Luke Skywalker
    3. Rey's Survival Guide :p (this one is actually very good)
    4. Star Wars Battlefront Twilight Company
    5. Aftermath Empire's End/ Bloodline (tied)

I really care if it is creative and well written. I'm not the kind of reader who wants to know everything.

Does Rebel Rising tell the "you abandoned me when I was 15 story"?

    Yes and more.

As for your original question, I still haven't read Leia: Princess of Alderaan, people say it's very good and tells about Leia's friendship with Holdo. For entertaining purposes I recommend From a Certain Point of View, not every story is a ten, but it's a great range of stories - from touching to hilarious. My personal title (Archwizard Woo-Woo-in-Chief is from one :D). There are few very interesting additions to the canon, especially Force/Force ghost related.

Also, read Thrawn, Lords of the Sith and Tarkin. Tarkin is my favorite of the bunch. It's not for everyone, it's very dense, but it has a lot of goodies - relating to the inner workings of the Empire, Tarkin's backstory is amazing and Tarkin/Vader relationship.

I did not know that. :p Can we make custom titles?

I've read Thrawn, Lords of the Sith and Tarkin. Loved them quite a bit. I'm a big fan of The Legends of Luke Skywalker, so From a Certain Point of View seems like an interesting book in this respect.

So now the choice is between Rebel Rising, Leia Princess of Alderaan and From a Certain Point of View. I'm surprised that no one is recommending Ahsoka though. I thought there were a lot of Ahsoka fans out there (I'm not included :p).

    Staff and mods only, sorry.

Ahsoka isn't bad (has a few nice scenes with Obi-Wan and with Bail Organa as well as how she got her white lightsabers) but it's really on the lighter side. And since you are not a fan, try one of the others. All three that were recommended to you (I personally can't vouch for Leia as I still have to read it) are good. Rebel Rising really dives in Jyn's backstory with Saw and explains why she is the way she is when we meet her in Rogue One, also things Saw did to be considered extremist even by the Rebellion. From A Certain Point of View doesn't require as much investment as a novel, but hides quite a few surprises. There is literally one story I really didn't like - because it was about a gimmick rather than the story.

FACPOV has some great, entertaining, and fun stories. I don't know exactly how it compares to the others, but I really do like that one.

I voted for from a certain point of view, i really like that one and in general really enjoy short stories. It has some familiar authors and some new-to Star Wars names. It’s always good to see new authors writing Star Wars.

I’m sure the Leia book is good too, haven’t read that one but Claudia Grey is one of my favorite SW authors at the moment.

If you can find Phasma cheap then go for that but unfortunately it not worth full price. & it's the only ne on the list I have actually read so can give a honest opinion on.
However FACPOV get lots to of positivity if you like short stories.
Personally I'm waiting for both TLJ novelisation & the next Thrawn novel as so far the first choice he is my favourite SW novel so far.
