Had this conversation with some friends discussing about which character should young boys want to be like or dress up as, since one of my friends has a boy who will turn seven next month.

I said there is only one character he could be and that is Finn. But then he argued why can't he be like Rey or even Han?

My response was he would either get bullied or beaten up if he want to an all boys school dressed as Rey and how does a boy expect to connect to a 70 year old man?

What are your thoughts? Should young boys be free to dress up as whoever they like, despite gender or even age or should they ideally go with the young, male hero type they can identify with?

Picture below was retweed by John, from a father whose son dressed like this:

Why not Kylo? I think any character is safe, Han wasn't always 70!!!! Or maybe.....let the kid decide who he wants to be!

My knee-jerk answer is: yes, they - boys or girls - should dress the way they like, like anyone they want. Why a kid could not identify with a badass person that is not like them? When I was a kid, I didn't want to be Leia. I wanted to be Luke. (luke)

Realities of this world, however, are that anyone not fitting societal norms is open to bullying. So, unfortunately, it depends on the environment - some are more open than the others. And, if your friend's environment is like that - his kid should be free to dress the way he wants.

Finn, I agree, is a safe choice. So is Poe.

Now, granted, I haven't been a kid in a while, but when I was, I was really good at it. And I'd have to think that if I'm a little boy, and I like Rey's character the best, I'm gonna pretend I'm Rey.

I probably would worry much about the gender. I'm a boy, so in this iteration, Rey's a boy. Because I'm Rey. Because Rey's my favorite character.

Hmm Kylo Ren is a villain.
Not really a person for young boys aspire to.

Still it is not right to aspire to be a villain, a person who killed a thousands of people.

Dress up is fun, but ''aspire to'' is not.

I always wanted to be Darth Vader when I was growing up. I suppose that never really changed (looks over at the crate holding my 501st Vader costume)

Yep. That is a key difference.

Like I loved the Joker when I was younger, but it was all about Keaton and Batman, who I'd want to be.

To ASPIRE to be a villain is a bit messed up

So if you had a boy who wanted to dress up as Rey to school and carry a Rey toy to an all boys school...you would be happy for him to do so?

There is no reason for the themes of Rey's character arc or heroes journey couldn't resonate with a boy. Afterall it worked for Luke and Anakin.

But there is also Finn, Poe, Han, Luke, Chewie, and so on.

Rey's costume in and of itself is fairly unisex. Its her figure that gives it shape. If it was worn by a boy it would look like a male peasant from Jakku.

Why "should"? It is not like they can't decide that themselfes but if a grown up tells them what to like it might have the opposite effect.
