My gut tells me it will be Rey (if anyone) who has the mid-trilogy solo quest. But then I wonder about the ancillary cast; namely Chewie, 3PO and R2. Where will they be, who will they be with and where are they at the end of the movie?

BB-8 is supposedly Poe's droid, even though he seems to spend a significant portion of TFA with Rey. Presumably, BB-8 is reunited with Poe at the end, making them a solid, standalone unit. Similar to Luke and R2 in ESB. This could work for a solo mission/story in EpVIII.

Rey is rumoured to leave the main group in the Falcon with Chewie for her journey to "planet Skillig" to find Luke (if we believe the rumours). This makes Rey the new "Solo" (capital "S"), captian of the Falcon and partnered with Chewie. But Han never took a solo mission (ok, there's a bad pun there).

R2 seems to be with Luke. This is based on the teaser shot and the news that "droids" (perhaps including R2) are on Skillig for the EpVIII shoot. And that leaves 3PO, who has been pictured in the Resistance base with Leia.

Not sure what any of this proves, except that who goes solo they may not be entirely alone....

I bet it must be Rey since it is most logical. After patroling the dune sea on her Jedi training and finding out that Salacious Crumb had survived the sail barge explosion, Rey fell in love with him much to everyones horror. Luke felt that he had failed as a master and went into hiding and Han and Leia shipped Rey far away to Jakku so that she would be as far away from Crumb as possible. Now that she is older, the Force bloomed in Ray (Awakened) and now she will go on a solo quest to find her lost loved one. This even makes Kylo Ren's tale correct as who wouldn't turn to the Dark Side if you're one day happily spending time with your friends and suddenly your sister brings along a dude like Crumb and anounces he's her boyfriend in front of all your pals. Instant fall to the Dark Side!!!

What are you talking about? This isn't even on the same topic.
I'm in favor of a Rey/Finn romance, but I can accept the writers having other ideas. And it's totally fine with me if Rey stays single, I just think it doesn't have to be for the sake of feminism, because I don't think "no romance" and "strong female character" have to necessarily be together.
I'm sorry if I offended you, I disagreed with you on the "defined by a romance" subject, it's just an opinion, I don't want to start an argument about this.

i dont give two s*its about feminism. What i'm outraged at is that you said the EXACT same thing as me yet felt the need to give ME a negative/ neutral rating for stating the same exact opinion! That's just incomprehensible to me. It causes maddening frustration.

No, I just said it was a strong possibility Finn could have a romance with the new female character, you said you hoped it will happen, that's where I disagree. But I can undo my disagree rating if this is so much a big deal to you.

I am actually going to go out on a limb as say FINN and REY will have a romance of some sorts. Much like Han and Leia...

Curveball, what if after the events of TFA, Kylo Ren becomes more of an anti-hero, akin to say, The Winter Soldier and it is him taking the solo adventure? Maybe he's feeling lost and is out looking for answers?

If it is Rey who goes solo, my only concern is that she'll never really have an opportunity to interact with Poe at all. That would leave us with another trio-by-default (Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padme) rather than a group of genuine friends.

You know, given the (placeholder) billing, with Adam Driver credited third and Oscar Isaac fourth, I've been wondering whether Poe Dameron as the third lead is a bit of a red herring. Maybe the 'real' trio is Rey, Finn, and Kylo?

I think they all could possibly go their own ways and then come back together at the end of Episode VIII leading into IX. Poe seems like the kind of guy to go off on his own and Rey is speculated to be training with Luke. So Finn would have to be doing something as well. Unless he goes along with Poe but I don't see that happening right now.

My gut tells me it's Rey, but it's probably a shorter adventure than Luke's or Obi-Wan's (or at least there'll be more interaction between her and Poe than there was between Obi-Wan and Padme in AOTC or Luke and Leia in TESB). Poe and Finn will have their own adventure and meet the new female lead(s), who'll probably become Poe's love interest.
