Ha. There's a couple good points on both franchises, but I feel that it boils down like thus:

Trek is nerdier because it is sci-fi, while Wars is more accessible because it is space fantasy; Trek is more focused on the science and technology, whereas Wars is plot-driven and willing to suspend our belief with "unrealistic" ideas; Trek is about exploration, Wars is about conflict. These are just definitions though, I'm not saying one franchise is better than the other (though, considering what forum we're on, one clearly is :p ). I believe this is the dividing line that upsets fans on both sides when it is crossed: Trek fans don't like when their franchise becomes more action-heavy (JJ Star Trek series), and Star Wars fans despise when our fantasy is bogged down by pseudo-realistic explanations and exposition (the Prequels). Ultimately both have their merits, but I would rank Trek as the "nerdier" of the two simply because it is less accessible to the average viewer.

I don't know. I see equal amounts of nerdiness between the two franchises. I'm tempted to gauge it on who complains the most... and it's still a pretty big tie. ;)

I'm a Star Wars guy, but Star Trek is pretty awesome too. This thread reminds me that I'm long overdue for a Wrath of Khan viewing.

Trek is by far the nerdier, in my opinion. There is something on the order of 800 hours of Star Trek to be watched. I've seen all of it...
Something that Star Wars always had over Trek is that air of mystery. Back in the day there were only a few Movies and thats all Wars had. Then in the 90s the books started coming out. There was always tons of Trek to see. Only a few Movies for Star Wars. The Trek novels were always understood as not being cannon. However the Star Wars books always carried more weight canoncally i think. (before D-day).

I think being a true Trekkie takes way more commitment than being a Star Wars fan. But a big difference to me is that I couldn't quote an entire episode of Trek. Wars, on the other hand...I've seen those movies countless times. They're so different, its hard to compare them! I would say Trek is the nerdier of the two though. Everyone knows who Vader is, not everyone knows who Q, or Khan, or the Borg are.

All that being said with the TV shows and the PT and the ST, Wars is getting up there with Trek as far as the shear amount of canonical material that is out there.

As usual, a long disjointed post. Sorry!

@Luuke22 and @Cole both NAILED it for me...all excellent points! I liked luuke22's differentiations in that it really separated the two on a laymans level...good job. Cole is so right about the sheer volume of information and episodes that Trek has...WOW!! I honestly do love (yes I said love) Trek for all of it's points like I do Wars, but have never seen it all, and won't live long enough to start now! :)

At the end of the day, If I were asked to choose sides, well SW would win. I'm drawn to it because of the moral and ethical dilemma of good and evil that is honestly in every one of us..to me, It's gripping.

Which is the most nerdy?? DEFINITELY the "Trekkies/Trekkers" of the Trek universe because NOBODY calls Han Solo a dirtbag!! :)

I like both Star Trek and Star Wars. When I want to see things explode, I watch Star Wars, but when I'm in the mood for philosophy, I watch TNG.

Great posts by all!! I too am a fan of both, my most fave in ST is Voyager. What I really enjoy most about Voyager is the leadership of Kathryn Janeway and her interaction with Chakotay, who is my favorite character in ST. Lots of leadership lessons from Voyager.....

I never gave too much attention to the Star Trek universe because as a child and yong person they were boring to me. I remmember to watched some movies but they were a little anoying.
Last year I decided to give it a try to TNG, because all of ST series are available in Netflix....and...
TNG was amazing! I wathced all 177 episodes and the series became my favorite Sci Fi television show I ever saw.
Now I am finishing TOS, that Iam liking a lot.
After TOS I am planning to watch all the movies of TOS and TNG era, they are a lot so it will take time.
After that I must decide about wich series I will watch:
    - DS9
    - VOYAGER
    - ENTRERPRISE
    - DISCOVERY

The universe of this franchise its huge.

I would go DS9, then Voyager, then Enterprise.
Also there is a chronological list of of all episodes. So TNG, DS9, and Voyager all have some overlaps. I've never watched it that way, but it might be cool.

There's simply no contest. Star Trek is warp factors beyond Star Wars in nerdiness.
Both attract a demographic of socially awkward people, but the other half of nerdiness is in specializing in a technical or scientific field of knowledge.

Star Wars doesn't provide nearly as much of a volume of raw material to geek out on in terms of technical and scientific inquiry as Star Trek.

You can pretty much stop any given scientist around today and ask them if Star Trek influenced their interests in science and they're pretty likely to say that it did to some degree.

People do really want to make a lightsaber, but Star Trek has thousands of devices to that one.
NASA even names things after Star Trek, and ponders some theories raised within Star Trek in a more realistic setting.
To my knowledge, there's no Skywalker shuttle or Millennium Falcon probe.

Star Wars seems to pop up as an influence more in the field of creative people in the arts far more than the technical and scientific fields.

    Cheers,
    Jayson
