    I voted TPM,

I was too young when Empire came out so I can't really include it. Although the hype was huge for TFA, the TPM was the first Star Wars film for 16 years and the anticipation to see the backstory of Darth Vader was massive!

Yeah TPM was pretty hyped, I really think it was doomed from the beginning, because of the over expectations. No movie could live up to that. TFA was pretty hyped, but I had lowered expectations.

But seriously though, I would probably say The Phantom Menace. But the hype for The Force Awakens was absolutely huge and I'm sure the hype for Empire Strikes Back was huge too.

The Force Awakens certainly had a lot of hype, but a lot of it was much more focused. For instance, the Journey to Star Wars events, aimed at Star Wars fans in particular.

The Phantom Menace, on the other hand, was everywhere. Even where it didn't make sense. Like, I'm not sure any of us went through the turn of the century without once wiping with toilet paper featuring Maul or Binks's face.
