Both are absolutely stunning films with only a couple of shots that I don't think fully work.

But I think Rogue One is the best looking of the bunch. Really, really gorgeous.

TFA - The Jakku shots tell such a great story in and of themselves. TLJ has some awesome shots too (probably more of them), which are beautiful, but I don't think the shots themselves tell us much story as did those in TFA.

Both TFA and TLJ look remarkably beautiful, but TLJ takes the cake. I'm not lying when I say the beginning space battle took my breath away at the stunning visuals and cinematography. Steve Yedlin did a fantastic job.

The Force Awakens just for the crashed Star Destroyer shot. It's my favorite in all of Star Wars.

Probably the unpopular opinion, but VII.

TLJ is gorgeous but, in my opinion, doesn't have the same roundedness and used-universe-Star-Warsy-goodness of TFA. TFA visually feels like something from the Lucas/Spielberg era of Star Wars and Indiana Jones and all those classic adventure films. TLJ's settings, those gorgeous, have a texture of unreality to them, especially on Crait and Canto Bight.

Both are beautiful, but TLJ is truly gorgeous: the space battles, Ach-To, Snoke's throne room, Crait and, yes, even Canto Bight. Shot compositions are remarkable, some straight out of master Kurosava's tool box. So, The Last Jedi all the way.

Both are stunning, and VIII does an excelent job using red palette, HOWEVER, VII is more familiar and has a....warm feeling.... I don't know how to say it, but as @Jaxxon said, it feels Star Wars.

Also, sometimes during VIII you could notice the green screen, and in VII it didn't happen in any moment.

We are spoiled. Some of us just don't know it yet. The last three SW films are all marvels to look at, but I choose TLJ. It's fantastic use of red, incredible close-ups, fun tracking shots (the moment on Dreadnought before Paige blows it up or the introduction to Canto Bight Casino) and some really greatly-lit moments (Rey getting dragged to Snoke's throne's podium and her face being lit with grimly white light from down under) make me awe whenever I see it. Also - Princess Leia never looked better onscreen than in this film.

PS. And yeah, the Throne Room fight is also decent, I guess. :p

I just have to add. Although I do think TLJ is more stunning, I gotta say I really want IX to look the same as TFA. Like other have said, it does feel more like Star Wars.

Exactly. When you see the quality of the cinematography on most blockbusters today, you see we're really lucky. And that trend continues with Bradford Young in Solo.

In the Finn vs Phasma battle. Especially the "Rebel Scum" moment. It's not too long and it didn't bother me, but I noticed it.

    The Force Awakens most definitely.
I love TLJ and enjoyed how Rian Johnson shot the film. But I also appreciate the feel of how JJ made TFA and I think it's overall the more beautiful film visually. Some of my favorite shots
    [IMG]

Kylo arrives on Jakku as the smoke clears. It's reminiscent of how Anakin led the clones into the temple, how Vader led the stormtroopers in the rebel Hoth base. Great shot and definitely intimidating.
The Falcon flying into Takodana. Reminds me of Naboo.
Rey soaking in a new planet for the first time in her life. Beautiful shot of the lake and mountains and Maz's castle.
Awesome shot and angle. A little video-gamey but hey SW is cheesy so whatever.
Arguably the best shot of TFA in my opinion. Pretty simple stuff. Kylo watching this freaking murder beam blast across space. We see his mask but not his facial expression and can only guess what he's thinking as he realizes what type of evil he's become apart of

-I love the shot of the Millennium Falcon on Starkiller Base as it crashes through the trees and skids to a halt right on the edge of the cliff.
-Love the shot when Kylo finds Rey and Finn and ignites his red blade as the white snow falls in the forest.
    -Love this:
    and this...

    and especially this

I've aways had a weakness for wide shots with sunlight, and nighttime shots in general (part of why I love Coruscant). Also anything with vivid contrasts in color (another reason I love Coruscant). So yeah, even with Canto Bight (whose plot was...meh), I love the visual style. TLJ wins for me.

Both are visually stunning but I'd have to give it to TFA.

Heh..I actually think Rogue One has the most amazing shots maybe in the entire franchise. Not the consistent gorgeousness of Empire, Force Awakens, and Last Jedi but some of the one offs are absolutely jaw dropping and the sense of scale is crazy.

Of course all the movies are beautiful in different ways. Not a one isn't stunning. AOTC lacks the impression of substance in the extreme but wow is it often painterly and lovely.

Return of the Jedi is probably the overall weakest for me but it is often beautiful.

We have been blessed with glorious cinematography and visuals regardless of differing opinions on the quality of the episodes.

To me even lackluster Star Wars beats an awful lot of movies because few movies of any stripe make as full use of the medium from the sound design to the music to the camera work to the themes to the awesome scope and tremendously memorable characters.

We couldn't be more blessed. It makes me sad some are unable to appreciate all this incredible work because to me it is more than magical.

RO and Empire are the shot films.
