Naboo would be nice, as a nice bookend for the saga (it was the first planet we saw in Episode I).

    This has my vote too.

I wouldn't mind seeing Coruscant again, either. though perhaps maybe not in the opening scene. Maybe the new (anti-FO) government establishes it's capital back on Coruscant after the destruction of Hosnian Prime?

But weren't all those Republic planets like Coruscant and Naboo blown up by Star-killer base in TFA?

They are starting to film in Scotland in June so I'd say it's going to be Ahch To or a planet like that.

I was a little fuzzy on how this all went down too. Apparently the Senate / capital rotates throughout member worlds of the Republic. Will be interesting to see how that plays out moving forward, or if a new republic is formed at all.

How about whatever planet Luke's Academy was on.
After all we have to find out where this was at some point right.

If we're going to Leia's Funeral I think the best place to lay her to rest is in the ruins of Alderaan.

If the first thing we see is the bad guys then I suggest Mustafar, as I think that Kylo Ren would set up shop there.

No, that was a completely new planet/system they invented just to blow up.

Coruscant and Naboo are still around, and I predict will play some sort of role, if Episode IX is the grand finale of the Skywalker saga.

They blew up Hosnian Prime (the current New Republic capital) and what looked like its surrounding moons. (Those were way too close to be the other planets in the Hosnian System, surely?).

It's so annoying they didn't just state the planet name. Just saying "The Republic" was confusing on many levels, and they didn't even try to make it look like anything but a carbon copy of Coruscant.

Poe said during TFA that Finn knew the details of the weapon that had destroyed the Hosnian system.

Yes, very quickly and after the fact--and who knew what "the Hosnian system" was? I certainly didn't. I just assumed it was the system Coruscant was located in.

Absolutely. TFA did a pretty poor job at explaining where on Earth are the characters going.

I mentioned this somewhere else, but this was one of the aspects I grew to like about Rogue One: introducing the setting as a subtitle as we arrived on each new planet. Just something about not having to guess "where are we??" ... Maybe it was necessitated by the good bit of jumping around that was done early on, though.

Probably when the script was written no one thought about introducing these planets and after TFA premiered someone went "Uh oh, guys, Rogue One has the same problem..." and they paid some company that specializes in creating little location cards (look at the RO credits, there's a company credited for title card and for the location cards) to create these. In TLJ, the problem was non-existent, since all the new locations (The Supremacy, Canto Bight and Crait) were well-established.

Yes I believe ep IX could explore in depth where Luke's academy was located.

Pablo Hidalgo's TLJ Visual disctionary states that it was on hidden place.

    Why was it hidden?

Well I can imagine that given the New Republics reaction to finding out Leia was Vaders daughter I can't imagine they would be to pleased with Luke actually beginning to train a whole bunch of new force users.

Also that one thing Luke got absolutely right he deliberately kept his new Jedi trying completely separate from the political arena.

since the Vader discovery didn't happen until much later, i think it was mostly just this.
train them away from the distractions of the budding New Republic and keep them from being sought out or interrupted.

God no. They need to ditch the hyperspace tracking thing and have a good time jump. I suggest jump a few years into the future where the rebels have designed a way of cloaking themselves in hyperspace ;) Good luck JJ dropping in the exposition for that one!
