Deadline did an article saying people on the inside are thinking Rian Johnson will be chosen for Episode IX given his film had no problems during production and the studio is apparently very confident in his film, moreso than TFA.

Rian also expressed interest not too long ago about doing another Star Wars film.

Do you think it'll be Rian Johnson as director of IX or will it be someone else?

I hope it's Johnson, and I hope the film is moved to december 2019.

Obligatory Christopher Nolan inclusion! Or JJ. Or Rian. Heck, honestly, I'm not even that opposed to letting GL come back and finish the trilogy (so long as he didn't write the script)!

I have not seen TLJ, so I cannot choose RJ. However, I am happy to hear the suggestion that Lucasfilm is happy with the movie.

While I think it would be good if RJ would help to write the script for Episode IX (because he now knows the characters well), I am curious to learn about other options.

What about Ryan Coogler? What will he do after Black Panther? Otherwise, what about Matthew Vaughn? He is done with the Kingsman Sequel. If you want experience, what about Danny Boyle?

I love Tarantino, Fincher, Nolan, Wright, PTA and Aronofsky, but they should make their own original work and not be part of a franchise.

    Lucasfilm is happy with TLJ.

Rian says an absolute yes to directing another SW.

Actors have nothing but praise for working with him.

Rian has no imminent project lined up.

    It's a no brainer.

Yeah he seems like a great collaborator but even though everyone is praising him, I think that they should wait for the WW BO vN though its a given

"Indeed, Colin Trevorrow revealed that The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson did a little bit of filming to be used in Episode 9.

“Not even a whole scene, just a tiny little moment. But it’s amazing how tiny moments can be… I think that’s almost become a right of passage now, for each director to ask for just one little thing."

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifes...isode-ix-director-colin-trevorrow-453028.html

Rian Johnson has already shot a scene for Episode 9, it's a sign...

I really like Looper and I think RJ is the best man for the job at this point, but...I'm a huge Bond fan as well, Sam Mendez did a marvelous job with Skyfall(2012), it received critical acclaim, GA liked it very much, and did well at the box office, so much so, the studio wanted him back for the next installment Spectre(2015) which he did direct as well, yet this time around it was not well received, Sam Mendez was reportedly burnt out with the franchise and Daniel Craig didn't want to play Bond anymore supposedly due to an injury he sustained from filming( well that has change Craig is back).

I fear the same thing may occur if RJ tackles episode 9. Its the same reason Kerchner refused to return for ROTJ. Kerchner stated that he had spent too much time away from his family because at the time making films took about 3-4 years and it was time he returned to his family. I've alway thought that if Kerscher directed ROTJ that we would have gotten a better film minus the much beloved Ewoks, but after the Mendez debacle I think directors should take a small break and return when inspiration strikes. JJ has taken a break so I think he maybe ready to return to the fold. Speilberg, Ridley Scott, Nolan, Snyder, Villenueve, Whedon(JL), Gilroy are a few I'd like to see take the challenge so to speak, director's chair, but some on this list maybe tied up with other projects/films.

I mean Ron Howard is directing Han Solo film, so it literally could be anyone. Martin Scorsese, that would be cool. Yes, that you should see. :)

Yes for 4 billion,I guess his work was evaluated by this.

    This is not a joke.

I mean is he "hireable" at all?

What the retirement means in the world if film dirrectors?

He is in his 70-s,the episode IX as his "swan song" .

    Would he accept?.

Is there a money that can bring him back?
Could something else bring him back?

He made much much more just with the merchandise (25-30bil), he didn't need it and prolly gave it away to charity.
You can't hire if someone made the clear choice to stay away from it. I mean yeah he talks much but that was quite a noticeable break.
He wasn't really into directing. He could have done much more in his career.

He's one of the richest dudes in the film industry. He is the person that got $4 billion for selling Lucasfilm. At this point he doesn't care for money.

We have to ask ourselves two questions - would Lucasfilm even consider pulling off such a move and would Lucas be interested in coming back? To the first question the answer is no. We cannot forget that Lucas and Lucasfilm parted ways mostly when the Sequel Trilogy was a mere concept and while there are endless debates on how big his imprint is on Episodes VII-IX, we can all agree that TFA and TLJ are not Lucas' films, just like all other stories created after the canon wipe. Lucasfilm with its new management wants to prove that they can create new SW content without George and inviting him to direct IX would absolutely dwarf what they accomplished until then. Moreover, Lucas is very authoritarian in the way he approaches films. If he's producing or directing a film, his vision should be the one that's put on film. Both Lord&Miller and Trevorrow seem to be fired because their vision of the film wasn't compatible with what the rest of the crew was trying to achieve. If their visions wuoldn't click (and there's a high chance they wouldn't,) the set experience would turn into a nightmare and we would have a repeat of whathappebed to Colin and L&M.

The answer to the other question is also most likely a "no." He moved on from Star Wars and filmmaking in general. All of the films he was involved in since Episode I got a mixed reception at most and that doesn't really encourage anyone to keep on working. Moreover, he's been married for just 4 years, has a four year old daughter to take care after. The other reason, a much more important one, is that his focus is on a completely different project - a billion-dollar one in form of Museum of Narrative Art, which he's been struggling to build for ages (according to CNN it's been approved just two months ago in LA.) This is his prime focus now and until he completes it (and that will last a while) he won't have time or interest in anything else.

Could recent developments, which are pointing to a possible loss of compass ,awake fatherlike emotions in Lucas?
Maybe if asked he will be honored to help in correcting the scenario, give some ideas?
Afteral it is his legacy they are continuing and maybe he could find interest in helping his life acheivement continued right(now when its obvious there are troubles).
Also, his presence in filming of EP IX will be positive commercial and psychologic factor.People are worried with all that dirrectors cleanups,it us not a good commercial.
