Why do I have the feeling Steven Spielberg is coming to a galaxy far far away?

Rian is easily my dream scenario for both writing and directing. If I had to chose one of these two roles for him, though, I would definitely pick writing. Actually, I wouldn't mind it if Rian wrote it and Trevorrow directed (Rian writing and Spielberg directing would be incredible). But if Rian was to direct only then I wouldn't be as confident about IX as I am about TLJ.

My biggest concern right now is that it might be too exhausting or logistically impossible for him to make two in a row, but who knows... I think LFL should do everything to make it possible. Pushing the release included. It's not only that TLJ had zero production problems (which is a big deal anyway!) but getting Rian seems to guarantee that the story of IX will follow TLJ naturally. If the studio is happy, and apparently they are, it's a no-brainer.

Do let us know. Seriously, why? Curious to know why you think this is a possibility.
    I feel like:
    (a) KK wouldn't ask him as there's a clear focus on newer directors (Ron Howard was an emergency call, EP9 hasn't even started filming yet).
    (b) If asked, he wouldn't say 'yes' to it as he has moved away from this genre and his connection with SW had a lot to do with Lucas.

It could be RJ or JJ.
For RJ, it would be quick turnaround but the problem with this is more LF and Disney have no analytics to support picking him...they have dont any test screenings for TLJ, they havent even seen the social media imprint of a trailer yet, all we had is the teaser which no one from LF or Disney was bragging about its youtube view count so it basically really didnt generate buzz. Meanwhile Disney had no trouble bragging about trailers from Thor or Black Panther. So could RJ work but it does seem dangerous to give him the power when you really dont know how TLJ will be viewed.

While I am not in favor of RJ directing Episode IX, it is important to note that trailers are not cut by the directors. Although I have not seen the movie, it seems to me that the Ragnarok trailers have shown much of the movie. Perhaps even too much. It could be that Lucasfilm does not want to spoil TLJ, which may explain why the teaser was perhaps a little underwhelming. However, Lucasfilm has seen TLJ. While it is difficult to predict how the general audience will receive the movie, it seems that Lucasfilm is happy with the movie.

Maybe they have but it seems weird to me to invest all the power in RJ when you have no metrics to judge how the GA will view the film.
If I was in charge I wait until I see how the trailer is received and what a few test groups think.
We heard reports everyone at WB/DC loved BvS.

If I was RJ right now, I'd be saying "How much you gonna pay me?"

Another name to potentially throw in the hat, Ava Duvernay (thanks Comicbook Resources for the idea). That'd be pretty cool to have a woman of color direct Star Wars.

That would end poorly no way George would take orders from Kathleen.

IF they hire Johnson.... then it's a pretty good sign that They feel they have a very good movie in hands with TLJ.

Rian Johnson seems very likely. If it's not him, how about Peter Jackson? I've always felt the LOTR movies were the closest Star Wars equivalent in my generation. Not sure if he's a fan, and it seems unlikely, but he could make a pretty epic final chapter. I would also be down to see Speilberg take the reins, or even Lucas, honestly. But it's doubtful he'd return.

On semi-related note, I'd like to see what the Coen brothers would do with the Obi Wan Kenobi spinoff..."No country for old Jedi"

I would love to see Lucas come back for the last one. Even if only as a co-director. This is his legacy. His story. I think he deserves, has earned and should be the one to wrap it up. For better or worse. However I think either RJ or JJ will be back to finish.

    I predict:

They will offer EPISODE IX to Rian Johnson....

He'll be the director of the last Star Wars Episode unless he refuses.

Then, ALEX GARLAND will be signed.

GORE VERBINSKI could do this. But Rian and Michael Ardnt should write it.

I think Rian writing it if he can't direct it would be great, if he's not busy with other projects.

GL is not a good director when it comes to people. Get him to direct a CGI scene, and your golden. Real people... not so much.
