The title is referring to 1 person otherwise it would be The Skywalker.

    Yep.

Rey is the central protagonist of the Sequel Trilogy and therefore is going to play a primary role in its narrative resolution, which we now know involves Palpatine's return (however said return was accomplished); the film's title therefore strongly suggests that she is the "Skywalker" who is rising, despite the fact that we know she cannot be and is not directly related to Luke and Leia.

Fortunately, there is, as I've noted, a branch of the Skywalker family line not directly connected to Luke and Leia and that we know absolutely nothing about, that being Shmi's paternal line.

That's logical, and would seem most likely. But my collective SW experience says it is not necessarily certain. I think it is still possible that Skywalker refers to the new force-wielding order.

After TFA, I said it looked like they were moving towards the Gray Jedi. Most here considered this to be stupid and/or ridiculous. But events in TLJ and this title(and trailer) make me think that is - potentially - exactly what is happening. I knew they wouldn't call them the Gray Jedi. Maybe they're calling it "Skywalker"

I learned my lesson from star wars naming conventions. Like episode 6 we won't know and debate for another decade till somebody retcons it.

The Jedi are an organization with a set series of beliefs and teachings; if you do not adhere to those teachings, you are not a Jedi.... period! This has been repeatedly stated by numerous people directly associated with Lucasfilm.

This "Grey Jedi" nonsense is a deliberate misinterpretation of what the Jedi actually are and what they stand for, and will never be 'codified' in Canon... EVER.

Easy. Palpatine is Darth Pelagius and he has cheated death. And based on the trailer I think he has a new Death Star to play with. At least someone does. That’s definitely a crashed Death Star at the end of the trailer,

It refers to Rian Johnson. In order to redeem the way he handled Luke in TLJ, this name was chosen to give hope to fans who disliked that film.

The simplest answer is usually the correct one. If we go that route, it's Luke. Here's why...
    1. JJ loves misdirection in his trailers. Luke says "but this is your fight" making us believe Luke is out. When he finds out Palpatine is alive, he will RISE!
    2. It's doubtful they will take a younger Hayden and make him return. I would think it would leak if he filmed anything, especially if there's action involved.
    3. Rey should not be related to Luke. There's no way they can cram that much retconning in the final act.
    4. Rey isn't related to Shmi. Even if she was, it's been all but confirmed that Palpatine was Anakin's creator.
    5. Luke sacrificed himself for his "disciples" to get away and live. He was taken by the force. Following the biblical story of Jesus, he died but will RISE again.

I still think the title will end up a double meaning so Rey will take the name Skywalker and all future Jedi will take the last name Skywalker.

And how do you think this will gonna be?
They will fight as forceghosts? Will they use their disciples (Luke/Rey, Palp/Kylo)?

To me its very hard to imagine that, but not imposible that happens.

Using the disciples would be cool. Luke and Rey in one corner. Palps and Kylo in the order. Rocky Balboa style! :D

I honestly think Luke will have to return in the flesh. He's not really "risen" as just a ghost. Same for Palpatine.

Where's the broom boy option? He's the Skywalker you've been looking for. You just don't realise it yet.

I think it refers to the past - the journey of Anakin/Luke - which apparently has some significance for the plot. I wish Kylo's redemption was the secondary meaning.

It's an extremely provocative title. I'm pretty sure they didn't go for anything literal like Rey being a Skywalker or introducing a new one, but definitely intended to make people think about it.

Ultimately I think it refers to Luke but has a double meaning in that the new Force Users will now be known by the name Skywalker, just as Siths are known by the name Darth. Rey will likely adopt the last name at the end.

Well, in my opinion it refers to the Skywalker lineage as the main characters not in 1 but in 9 movies! Of course it could be referring just to Rey or Anakin, but it wouldn´t make any sense as far as Anakin is unknow in the new trilogy... He is only new as Darth Vader but in any moment remembered as Jedi.

Talking of Rey, we cannot speculate just for the title that Rey is a Skywalker, there are some points those support that theory, but nothing else...

I think, somehow, this will loop back to Rey.

Gonna paraphrase a little, but in Last Jedi, Snoke says "light darkness, and light to meet it." He says he warned Kylo his equal in the light would rise, but he thought it would be Skywalker and is surprised it's Rey.

Now, we have the Rise of Skywalker. So the one rising is Skywalker. And the one rising is Rey.

I think somehow these concepts will mesh.

They are clearly framing Rey as the hero and this generation’s legend. I don’t think we are going to see a lot of Luke in this movie. I could see something significant happen at the very end of the movie; something cool and meaningful with Luke to help close out the saga, but I don’t see him that will take away from Rey and the new characters. They are the ones who will ultimately triumph to finish out this trilogy

There's no indication as to what it actually refers to in the film yet...

...but initially, I'm positive it's a marketing move to appease fans who lashed out about RJ "killing" Luke.

I see @cassidy said something similar above. I think you're definitely onto something. (sorry to see people are still getting negative ratings around here for saying anyting negative about TLJ)

I enjoyed TLJ, but the title for TRoS definitely feels like a response to disgruntled fans.

In my 32th watch of the trailer :) I made the exercise of imagining the voice over at the beginning being Luke talking to Kylo/Ben.

"We've passed on all we know."
"A thousand generations live in you now."
    "But this is your fight!"

Could be to Rey or Ben. However, said to Ben seems more personal, and is not what we're made to believe in the teaser. Kylo's helmet being restored seems too obvious also, and it could have been restored for some specific purpose. Kylo/Ben wears no helmet in the teaser.

"The Rise of Skywalker" could be:

    a) The Skywalker within Kylo rises.
    b) The story of how the Skywalkers came to be.
    c) Rey adopts the name (or is a) Skywalker.
    d) Luke returns from the dead via force ghost or via other means to advise Rey and/or Ben.
    e) Leia's "Skywalker" side rising as well, and she uses the force in some unexpected new way.

It may even be all or some of the above in different degrees, among other possibilities.

So, it may be several things. However, "Rise" suggests that the "object" was previously down, or obscured, oppressed, hidden or asleep. So, it involves a change of state and not just the origin of something. So, the Skywalker was "down" and now rises or is reborn!

\Edit: Bonus thought. Luke was not the last Jedi. Rey is. He said it himself in the movie. So, Rey was the last Jedi and now the Skywalker may rise. So, the force awakened to become the last Jedi to then rise as a Skywalker. Yoda burned the Jedi tree. A transformation has happened. The Skywalker rises. As Snoke said: "Skywalker lives! And as long as he does, hope lives in the galaxy.". Seems obvious that at least one Skywalker will live at the end of the saga.

Mark my words... if the scene goes like this am throwing my popcorn at the screen.

    Bad guy: You're a nobody!
Rey: No am a ....Skywalker (adopts the name right on the spot).
