    f) Rey is connected to the Skywalker family through Shmi's paternal line, which would satisfy both the "she HAS to be a Skywalker" crowd AND remain true to what TFA and TLJ established.

John Boyega,a guy in the movie' s guess, for the title. before he heard it was: "Heirs to the Force" I think Skywalker refers to many people all the force wielders who will come after Rey who believe in the legend of Luke Skywalker the LAST jedi. So I chose another Skywalker in the poll. There is another....a lot of them. Yoda knew all along...

Someone (in page 2 I think) mentioned the "rising" could be similar to Biblical 'rising from the death'. Now that I consider it and give it more thought, why not? We're already know Anakin was being born without a biological father, in a world where he was a second-class citizen/slave, with special gifts/powers, with a prophecy of being a saviour (balance to the Force), etc. In 1999, many critics commented that there were parallels to the Biblical Jesus, at least to his early years. Why couldn't Luke be continuing the parallels to Jesus' later years? Luke led a group disciples to pass on his teachings, one of them betrayed him, a manhunt was ordered, and he ends his life saving others, who were facing persecution from the evils in power. What came next according to the Biblical story?

At the beginning I though that Force Ghost was the only option, but now I think it wouldn't be something new. Ben, Yoda and Anakin have already achieved that. It make sense that after 30 years as full Jedi Knight/Master, Luke must have already accumulated the specific knowledge/training to *at very least* achieve that. However, if it was already possible to manipulate the midichlorians to create the life of his father, why it couldn't be possible to manipulate them to bring back Luke? Pretty much every single new SW movie showed us a new Force power. Perhaps, Rey (or even Kylo) finds a way do it. After learning about Palpatine's return, perhaps Palpatine admit in front of Kylo that he had created his grandfather and that Kylo and Rey owe to him everything they know about the Force. This could be the catalyst to learn more about midichlorians manipulation. Perhaps, it's in one of the books that Rey stole from Luke's tree.

I kinda hope that we get to see luke training/guiding her in ghost form. Obi-wan helped guide Luke as a ghost, so I dont see why this wouldn't be a possibility.

I'm sold on biological Rey Skywalker.

I can't count the number of times that it has been said by people associated with Lucasfilm that this is about family. Then take the reference to every generation's legend. Luke says he became a legend after ROTJ. The second TFA trailer by JJ heavily implied that she was a Skywalker with the unused dialogue about the Force being strong in his family.

So how does this work without retconning TLJ...

Rey and Kylo were both right, but they didn't have the whole story.

Han and Leia hid her from Luke and everyone else by giving her to foster parents at birth, (recall in bloodlines that Leia said she could feel the dark side pull on Ben even in her womb) just like what happened with Leia, except this time the foster parents flaked out, so the filthy junk traders/nobody story is true, its just not the complete truth.

Luke was wrong about the Jedi ending, as he was put right by Yoda and then reiterated his new conviction of a continuing Jedi tradition in his face-off with Kylo on Crait. So that kills the Skywalker as a replacement for the Jedi line of thinking.

They are bringing the Emperor back to tie the whole saga together, and misread the prophecy was, because it will be Anakin's granddaughter that ultimately fulfills it.

This makes for a story that can be understood as a standalone film while completing the big 9 movie story and can be explained in very little exposition.

Think about it this way, the PT was about a hero Skywalker, the OT was about a hero Skywalker, so of course the ST is about a hero Skywalker, and every trilogy was about a new generation hero Skywalker. It will all rhyme very perfectly after the trilogy wraps up, its just hard to see it now.

Stop with the Han and Leia thing.

If Rey is a Skywalker, her connection has to come from somewhere other than through Anakin's side of the family tree, and the only option available is through Shmi's paternal line (i.e. a male sibling).

I believe the title refers to Be
Shmi and Qui-gon had a kid together. There were clearly some sparks between those two.

The title most definitely refers to Ben Solo-Skywalker. He will be redeemed and claim his birthright as the Skywalker heir. He will finish what his grandfather started and bring balance to the force.

Anything is still possible and not absolute. Luke and Lea were born from genes of a powerful force user. If Anakin was conceived of the force, then another relatives of Shmi wouldn't necessarily be relevant.

I keep thinking of this, that Return of the Jedi refers to Darth Vader/Anakin. There's no convoluted other Skywalker out there at this point. Somehow, Darth Vader will be vindicated throughout the galaxy at the end of this movie, and perhaps his family (or grandson) will be as well.

I strongly feel it's Rey Skywalker... not because she is blood related to any Skywalker, but because she's like Anakin, a "product" of the force... manipulated by Palpatine. For me at least that's what makes more sense. It would explain why she's so powerfull before any training., and it would make a full connection to the prequels.

Usually the simplest explanations are the best, and I think what you say makes all the sense. I always felt Rey was kin to Anakin in some way, by direct family ties or due to both sharing a common origin. I liked the clone/rebirth theory before TLJ, even the fighting style of Anakin and Rey seem very similar. This would explain also why the light saber called for Rey, because Rey and Anakin would have a lot in common, starting with their origin.

The Rise of Skywalker would be the story of the origin of Anakin and Rey Skywalker, because Skywalker was the name given by Shmi or by whom the father was, if any. Palpatine would be the technical "father" of the Skywalkers, and this saga would be the tale of how the Skywalkers came to be, or have risen.

This would also explain why both are great fighter pilots even with limited or no training. Anakin was the "best fighter pilot in the galaxy" and the best pod racer. They both are great mechanics, can fix all sorts of things and are extremely gifted with the force, perhaps the most powerful force wielders ever. Basically, they are unnatural, most probably a construct of the force, manipulated or not by evil means, but it seems undeniable that both Anakin and Rey are products of the force, and possibly they were both created by Darth Sidious.

Snoke was not aware of Rey. He thought the awakening was Luke. Nope. It was Rey. So, if Darth Sidius has created Rey, why did he do that? We do see Rey travelling to the Death Star... and then we get Darth Sidius laughter. Could she be a device created by him in order to find him so he could be free or take possession of her or something else?

Precisely... I guess in the end of the movie Rey will face some kind of test, but unlike Anakin she chooses the light side even if it implies loosing someone just like Anakin lost Padme... just my 2 cents.

    Edit: Spelling

If we operate under the assumption that the "simplest explanation" is going to be used, Rey being a Skywalker by birth through a male sibling of Shmi's is far simpler than reusing the " Vergence in the Force" angle.

That would make them kin yes, but in principle they would not be related to the same "father", or the same influence of the force for that matter, leaving Palpatine out of the equation as the possible mastermind behind the rise of the "Skywalkers", Anakin and Rey. Shmi is called Skywalker, true, but she never showed any abilities with the force, not that she couldn't be force sensitive, but all leads to believe that the Midichlorians, possibly through Palpatine were the origin of the extraordinary force abilities of Anakin Skywalker. At least this is heavily implied by TPM and, if I'm not mistaken, I read somewhere that there are comics that describe how Sidius influenced Shmi to give birth to Anakin.

In this sense, Skywalker would be the adopted name to the Vergence of the Force that Anakin was, and now Rey would be another. If Sidius is behind the two it would technically make them siblings, both as offspring of the Force, with Sidius influence, and something tells me that they could have been made to obey Darth Sidius. I remember an Obi-Wan line where he says "You could be made to serve the Emperor", to Luke. I always found that line to be a bit strange. Maybe the Skywalkers were made to obey Darth Sidius.

But I digress. Your suggestion that Rey may be a Skywalker by birth through a male sibling of Shmi's is indeed simpler, but I think the "Vergence in the Force" theory applied also to Rey with Palpatine again behind it could be more interesting in my view, especially now that we know Palpatine is involved in the saga finale.

^ We've been told that we were not supposed to take certain panels from the final issue of the Vader comic (the ones that seemed to reveal Palpatine as having caused Anakin's conception) literally.

Very well, but what does that mean? Does it mean they are non-canon, or simply that we should add a grain of salt? I'm not versed in the comics, nor the animated series by the way, so I don't know. What do you think?
