Okay be honest, who else geeked out when they saw Red & Gold Leaders arrive on the scene at the Battle of Scarif? I was so excited my brother had to calm me down :p

I did, that was something I wasn't prepared for.

In general I really appreciated the way Gareth Edwards handled the issue of recreating scenes vs. recyling footage from previous films.

He could have just recycled footage from ANH (Death Star firing operation, Porkins etc.) but imposed on himself the rule only to either use footage previously not seen in ANH (i.e. extra footage of Red and Gold Leader) or recreated several scenes.

Admittedly, that sometimes looked odd (especially the new perspective of the TIE fighter cockpit) but in doing so he definitely added more flavor to the OT era.

Definitely me. I saw the OT in theaters when it was first released when I was 10, and THOSE shots made me feel "that feeling" once again. R1 has itself nailed to a special place in my heart because of those scenes, and to me, it is most like the OT because of it. I'm placing R1 even on my ratings scale with TFA, if not just above it on the list.

I nerded out so much, a pity the rest of my viewing row just didn't understand. In hindsight, the noises I made must have made me look like a right buffoon. #wouldntchangeathing

I had a pretty big reaction in the theatre at this scene. I think I may have even said "oh my god!" out loud :p

I was really impressed with how they did it too. Using the old footage that way and all. I felt like the scene added new depth to squadron in ANH, which is really cool. Even more so though, I was just not expecting it. It was probably the biggest surprise in the film, other than that last Darth Vader bit at the end.

I loved all the space dogfights in this movie, the movie made clear, respectful nods to the OT

There may or may not have been a small internal fist pump involved.

I didn't geek out a ton but after watching ANH recently and after watching Rogue one recently I am able to make the connection. It's pretty nostalgic if you think about it.

Yes I loved it, however, still pissed off about that targeting computer in ANH.....I mean look at that screen below....Red Leader fired exactly when he should have, and his torps missed.....that computer must've been Hammer Tech

I had no idea that was in store and I was like, "Was that actually just.... Did that really happen?" O_o

They are hands down my favorite Easter egg of R1.

I love the title of this thread :D I was in major geekage mode. Memories from my single digits childhood of rewatching the original trilogy after Episode 1... I gotta say, hats of to the director for pulling it off.

I grinned like an idiot when Gold & Red Leaders showed up on screen! I want to track down Gareth Edwards and bearhug him for that :D Oh man I love this film! <3

    (death star)(tie)(tie)(x-wing 2)(tie)(x-wing)(tie)(tie)(falcon 2)(tie)

It's because the shot is impossible, even for a computer, but not for a force-fueled Son of Skywalker :)

    (x-wing)(epic fail)
