So after viewing TLJ, my canon has been ruined. I am, however, excited to start with Legends content. I never got into the Legends universe, partly due to my age when the first slue of books were released, while also hearing about the many issues that arose due to issue of GL not recognising them as canon which then created issues with what was and what wasnt from a fans perspective.

I've just ordered The Heir to the Empire, a part of the Thrawn Trilogy which should arrive in a couple of days.
Could anyone give me (outside of the Thrawn Trilogy) recommendations? general favourites, reading order, etc would be great.

what about you guys? any others that never got into the Legends universe? what about those that also feel the same about the new Star Wars? I'll also add that while i did keep up with the Disney EU, i didnt think that they were that great in terms of consistency and ideas. a lot just seemed to take one bread crumb and expand on that, knowing you cant get juicy stuff while the ST is still in progress. C3PO's red arm is one example, but even the Aftermath series, while going into some good stuff with Han and Chewy, just couldnt muster anything new or large enough in scope featuring our favourites in a bid to keep secrecy... and after TLJ, im not really sure why.

LFM can still cherry pick from the Legend books ( some seem to forget, so Legends is still relevant) for instance, The Han Solo trilogy written by A. C. Crispin is one of my favorite legends books( the SOLO film has cherry picked from Crispin's trilogy). All the anthologies, Tales of books ( Tales of the bounty hunters/tales from Jabba's palace, tales from the republic, tales from the empire, tales from the cantina, etc..) I still read now and then. Any legend book by M. A. Stackpole (RIP) I, Jedi is long and picks up in the middle, great book IMHO. Those Legend books kept me going during the dark times, when there were no Star Wars films every December.

Just been listening to the Thrawn trilogy again on Audio book after watching the last Jedi as it made me miss those stories.

I like The truce at Bakura, The Jedi Academy Trilogy and The Hand of Thrawn Books.

I miss the Knights of the Old Republic the most out of everything, I'd recommend that.

This might be unpopular nowadays, but I prefer TLJ's version of Luke to the old EU. Imo his arc is complete with TLJ, while in the Old EU he was just like your average superhero.

My interest in the the pre-PT era on the other hand definitely increased after watching the new movies.
I hope one day we're going to see a KOTOR styled Star Wars...

Having read a lot of legends stuff, I can safely say that you're not missing anything. The stuff I've seen since 2012 when Disney took over is 1000 times more interesting to what came before. No more Vong, no more Saint Skywalker, no more politics, no more late 80s crinch Star Wars stories, no more bad stoic Jedi dialogue. I'm glad it's gone. But that's my opinion. If you like Legends, enjoy it.

I can highly recommend the Thrawn Trilogy, Allegiance, Scoundrels (all by Timothy Zahn), Karen Traviss' Republic Commando series and Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter by Michael Reaves. My absolutely favorite books are the Thrawn-related stories, because he is an outstanding character.

There's a lot of good stuff in Legends, to be sure. You've made a great choice by starting with Heir to the Empire.

Just know that among all the great stuff in Legends, there's also a lot of garbage. For every Thrawn, there's a Hohass Ekwesh and Mount Sorrow. I'd take the new canon over that stuff any day (still not the most glowing of recommendations, I know).

I actually love both Legends and Canon. I'm sorry you don't feel the same way and that's fine. But yeah, there's some garbage in both. Right now I'm reading Revan and Leia: Princess of Alderaan. I get it though, everyone has a preference and that's completely fine, but it upsets me when legends fans and Canon fans call each other out saying they're "fake fans". I don't think anyone dictates who is a real fan and who isn't because Star Wars belongs to everyone. We all have a different idea about what it should be.

I've played through the games, but i do know there is a comic series out there. tbh though, im more into novels than comics (except Watchmen).
    Thanks though!

i dont think its unpopular, id say theres a pretty even split as to people who enjoy post-ROTJ new canon, and Legends. its just that each new announcement/movie/etc has been so long since the initial announcement (the Disney takeover) that many voices seem silenced and/or have changed stances with each newly introduced movie/comic/announcement.

but yes, craving a KOTOR time period focus. its unfortunate Rian Johnson has already denied this (with regard to his new trilogy).

what you just listed is mostly what is Star Wars for me. the Jedi are stoic (a positive), Luke is a Saint (how dare you, lol), politics are hella interesting with fantastical, space opera settings (not real life, though real life history with regard to politics is neat), 80's Star Wars is the real thing, and the Vong, well idk about them (yet)... but, to each their own, and who knows i may not enjoy them for a plethora of other reasons..

agree on all points. when it becomes 'not for X person' anymore, obviously theres a period, similar to the stages of grief/loss, that occurs. but once time goes by, its able to be reconciled with maturity and understanding that you are not the only person in the world.
side note: i've still only seen TLJ once- and though i think i am pretty firmly going to hate it forever, i am willing to change this stance upon a second (or third) viewing. we'll see...

There were good things. Knights of the old Republic, Star Wars Republic (Darkhorse), Star Wars Legacy (Darkhorse), Star Wars Empire/Rebellion (Darkhorse) and also some of the books about the pre-TPM era.

But I just really didn't like the post-ROTJ content. Thrawn trilogy was okay, but still very weird to me. Dark Empire was, well... completely mad. The New Jedi Order books were a hilariously convoluted mix of prequel and original storytelling with a new threat that never felt like it had anything to do with our characters (the vong). The Post ROTJ EU dragged on and on with no clear resolution. "The last of the Jedi you will be", Yoda had said, but there just happened to be dozens and dozens of other Jedi survivors. Inconsistent and weird. Always hated it. The old characters were never confronted with new inner conflicts and in the end it become nothing less than a Space Opera version of the Bold and the Beautiful. George Lucas absolutely hated it and for good reason in my opinion.

The Aftermath Novels are garbage compared to the Thrawn Trilogy.

Thawn Trilogy - Arguably the cleanest set of books that fits so well with the OT.

Darth Plagueis - I cant remember if that book is cannon or non - if non - fantastic read. (Really helps and assists the PT trilogy).

Plagueis is fantastic. The whole book builds up perfectly to the ending.

I love TLJ but I started the Thrawn trilogy recently and I have to say this is some compelling stuff! I am half way through the first book and am totally stunned by it! If they had made it canon i absolutely would have been at peace with it.Aftermath really is boring compared to it.

No longer canon. I love that one too though I never liked the idea of Plagueis being a Muun.

I only think that there is one mistake they made with the new EU, and that is letting the Empire die one year after the battle of Endor. It seems a bit rushed to me and it has incidentally forced them to exclude the Trawn trilogy from the metanarrative.

As for Aftermath, it was an enjoyable read, but I prefer the events after ROTJ described in Lost Stars. Lost Stars spoke of new emperors and counter emperors fighting it out with their stormtroopers after ROTJ, but none of that can really be seen in the Aftermath novels.

    WoW !
    Surprise me.
I wondered for the Longest time if I might be the only OG fan that didn't like the post RotJ Legends.
I remember 1991, seeing that first book.
Stood around in the book store, reading them first pages...
came back days later and bought it.
I got meybe half way through, just couldn't finish.
    Didn't hate it
(pretty Strong word, there), just didn't like it.
Still, to this day, never finished it or the two that followed.
They Did (now, lookin' back) serve an important purpose, reviving SW and the beginning of ending "The Dark Times".
Read the Jedi Academy trilogy and (here, you'll find this funny)
it felt too fantastical (I know, it's already a fantasy Story).
I kept up (generally) with how post RotJ stories were Playin' out through SW Insider and Starlog (later, the Web). Read 'Tatooine Ghost' , it was ... alright
.Now, the Clone Wars books I ate them up. They were good, to me.
Loved the 'Republic Commando' stories (still gotta read the last two books, someday).
Oh yeah, some one said 'Plageuis', Really Good Story, still Love it.

I was very happy (just to myself) when 'Legends became ... just that.
Probably one of a Very OG'ers to feels hat way.
I've Never and Will Never give 'guff' to anyone that likes what they like.
If somethin' for you and not so much me, that's just fine.
    We can still be friends.

If ya got this far ... Thanks fer puttin' up with me.

I too did have my reservations on that, but over time now I feel they (Muun) look quite malignant with a Sith like complexion, eerie and really (IMO) fits the character. Such a great read.
