I think he was from alderaan (for him Leia is not a general, but a princess) and knew Leia and Luke somehow, maybe he met them after ROTJ, but I don't have any other idea about him xD maybe we'll learn some information in the next movie or in some book/comic

I think Marco nails it, he's an Alderaanian loyal to Leia . Nothing more, nothing less. Maybe there will be a backstory in a novel or comic someday.

This was probably some of the most rushed dialogue in the film. That, and when Han jokes to throw Captain Phasma in the trash compactor and we never see her again.

The novelisation of TFA might provide some more background info on his character, and how he came about the information.

His character was named Lor San Tekka.

(Not sure why someone would report my 1st post as trolling for answering a question:confused:)

In the Visual Dictionary, there's something in there about "explorer of the more remote fringes" and "... Tekka has proven his worth to the New Republic... " but the rest of the text here is cut off the leaked photo, making it practically impossible to understand all of it.

    There's also this:

"Though San Tekka is not Force-sensitive, he has witnessed its power firsthand. During the dark times of Emperor Palpatine's rule, San Tekka was a follower of the Church of the Force. This underground faith was made up of loosely affiliated worshippers of the Jedi ideals, who steadfastly believed that one day their light would return to the galaxy."

I'm guessing his connection to both the New Republic and the Church of the Force, explain how he's familiar with Luke and Leia.

I'm interested to see the novelisation.

Especially after finding out it includes this:

I think his character is a Jedi instructor who Luke trusted with his location. He is not a Jedi

Reading the novelisation at the moment. There isn't much more info, at least not by the time of his death, though
Poe asks him how he came about the map and he just smiles and changes the subject.

Hopefully there'll be more about him in the coming movies, in the form of flashback most likely. At the moment he seems pretty inconsequential. If the character was so meaningless, why have someone like MVS play him?

If I hadn't known it was JJ directing this movie, I would have sworn that the Director had schizophrenia.

I think it was a masterstroke. All too often bit parts are played by sub par actors and it jars. MVS brought an air of gravitas to LsT's character. I felt like the guy had a lot of experience and was very wise. I also think there was a reference to The Seventh Seal in there, where the Knight who had fought in the crusades, played by MvS wanted to accomplish one good deed before his inevitable death, Kylo of course symbolising death.
