Who is your favorite new Rogue One character, and why?

(No, Darth Vader does not count!)

    My favorite is Bodhi Rook.
    Bodhi Rook poster.jpg bodhi3.gif

He's basically a civilian (the only one of the main R1 crew) who decides to join this military action called the Rebellion. He's the delivery guy who becomes convinced that his delivery company is up to no good and he needs to stop being part of the no good and become part of the good instead.

I love how Bodhi is the one who gets the plot rolling: He defects at the behest of Galen. He spreads the word that there's a superweapon, and that info reaches Cassian. Bodhi tries to find Saw and brings the message for Jyn. Cassian brings word to the Rebel leaders, who hatch a plan to find Jyn, who can lead them to Saw and to the superweapon information...

I like Bodhi best because I can relate to him most. He's scared and feeling out of his league most of the time, but he still perseveres, because doing what's right is not only good in itself, but it can also begin to pay back the wrongs he's done.

begin to make things right 2.jpg

I think the words in the picture tell us a lot about Bodhi's arc, but also about Galen, who must have managed somehow to see into the heart of this guy that he probably only knew casually at first.

More importantly, I think these words by Bodhi from Galen affect Cassian profoundly. He overhears Bodhi say them to Jyn, just before he is about to go and assassinate Galen. This statement tells Cassian that not only is Jyn telling the truth about Galen's character, but that Galen is really a man who ought to live to give testimony about the weapon. Perhaps this, in addition to his pity/compassion for Jyn, is why Cassian can't ultimately pull the trigger. And perhaps they prompt him to join up with Jyn after the Rebel Council nixes the idea of a military strike against the Empire, that he can make his past right...

Like Jyn, Bodhi has Imperial ties, and he stands behind her both literally and figuratively at the Rebel Council meeting, where hostile eyes on are them.

Bodhi spends a lot of the movie being scared.

    bodhi7.gif

However, the guy who most likely had no combat experience comes up with almost all the secondary improvised distraction plans and finds a way to get the message through to the Rebel fleet so they can get the shield down for the plans to be sent out.

    bodhi2.gif bodhi with cable.jpg

He finds the strength and hope--like all of the R1 crew--to do what they can for what's right, and to take the next chance, and the next, till the chances are spent.

So that's my favorite new Rogue One character. Who is yours, and why? ;)

You make a strong case! I was immediately going to choose Jyn or Cassian, but now I'll have to give a long, hard look at Bodhi.

I voted K2SO, simply because he was so fun to watch. He's a droid, so character potential is limited, but they managed to give him a surprising amount of personality in the circumstances, and it actually makes you feel sad when he's "killed."

I liked Chirrut the most. However out of all of em I wished Bodhi lived. Bodhi was me. He was the everyman. The guy who works 9 to 5. The clock puncher. The brown bagger (lunch not booze). Trying to get a date on Friday then the big promotion on Monday. Paycheck to paycheck.

    I am Bodhi.

But Chirrut.......just 2 dang kewl! Makes me feel 8 again! :D

    Krennic maybe, not sure yet.
If they used the aliens a little more, Moroff, Pao and Bistan had a lot of potencial to be a great characters.
The two tubes alien was awesome.

So far, after three viewings, it's Cassian - not because he is a good dude, he really is not, but because he is the most complex of the new characters and he (apart from Jyn) has the greatest character arc - including some details from the novelization. He started on the Separatist world where he was pulled into the war at age of six (and hated the Jedi), when the Republic became the Empire he became part of the Rebelion where he became Fulcrum, spy, wet work expert - all in the name of the Rebellion. It takes him meeting Jyn to look back at his past deeds and find the right cause again. We know how that ends.

He set the tone of the film for me (when he killed the informant) and his and Jyn's deaths capped the emotional experience. Diego Luna gives him a lot of emotions (including anger at himself) that might not be apparent in the script and his chemistry with Felicity was great.

Chirrut is the most lovable, K2 the funniest. I liked them all, really, for various reasons, but so far, Cassian is my man.

Maybe I'll change my opinion later, after I see the film more times, though.

Yeah, Bodhi was a really interesting character in that there really wasn't anything all that special about him- yet, in a way, he was kind of the linchpin that held it all together.

That's not the reason to like the character, that's the reason to like Diego Luna. :p

Though his obsession with Jabba might be a down side. :D

It's a testament to how good Rogue One is that choosing a favorite character is so difficult.

For "cool factor", it's Chirrut, hands down.

    For moral complexity, it's Cassian,

For humor (and a surprisingly emotional death) it's K2SO.

For "the everyman who is scared out of his mind, apparently rather shell-shocked and possibly suffering a form of PTSD", it's Bodhi.

For raw ambition and the evil it leads to, it's Krennic.

And for very limited screen-time and dialogue, Baze is the most underrated. He's pretty bad-ass.

Furthermore, Jyn holds the film together very well and Saw has such a bizarre speech cadence and delivery that he is at least memorable.

Basically, this movie rules and gets better with each viewing (I'm up to 6). It is easily on par with the OT.

I honestly loved them all. I picked Chirrut because he was the most interesting to me, I do have a huge crush on Cassian, and I loved Kaytoo and everyone else, quite a lot. It was hard to pick. They did a great job on all of these characters. Would love to see a Baze and Chirrut comic or backstory of some sort as well as one for Bodhi or Cassian.

P.S. I love Diego Luna's obsession with Jabba very much. That man is adorable.

my personal favorite is cassian, although i love all the appreciation for chirrut! he is also a really neat character.

i chose cassian because he's a very strong and independent individual, and he's not afraid to make what choice he thinks is right even if that means disobeying orders. on a different note, diego luna is absolutely precious and i found it very important (in a representational sense) that he was able to keep his Mexican accent for the role.

Guys.... I found Jyn & Cassian underwhelming. Now I don't dislike em as much as Rey. Just hard to get it in words. Hence dislikes.

Jyn's crying when seeing Galen's hologram & while he was dying seemed unnatural. Also a measly joke from her about K2 being target practice? That's it?

Cassian was a little more "lively". But it was difficult to understand his Basic at times. Also lacking personality like Jyn's. No humor at all.

However his speech b4 going into battle was good.

To put it another way Baze had the least amount of screen time but more personality then both put 2gether.

I went K2SO, like the whole say what a bloody well like and like what a bloody well say approach. Dry humour without him trying to be comical. Good addition to Rogue One cast.

I don't know why I didn't notice it before, but Jyn as a grownup wears her hair the same way her dad did the last time she saw him. (Possibly the way Lyra had hers too, but I couldn't get a good glimpse of the back of her head.) Maybe it's a coincidence, or maybe buried deep down, she still believed that whatever he did, he did to protect her...
