Spoilers if you havent seen TFA!!!!

Mods please merge if this has already been discussed.

Here's my speculation. After watching TFA twice, I'm thinking that it was Kylo that left Rey on Jakku. Snoke seduced Kylo to the Dark Side, but he still has a lot of good in him, leaving him very conflicted. Kylo and the Knights of Ren slaughter the new Jedi-in-training. Luke is absent at the time (because if he was there, he would have wiped the floor with the Knights). Kylo, because of his conflict, couldn't bring himself to kill his own cousin/sister. So he secretly spirits her away to Jakku and drops her. He was too weak to kill her. So when the officer mentions a girl, he almost looses it. A girl on Jakku is back in play. He doesn't want Snoke to find out that he was weak and let his cousin/sister live. Luke, Han, and Leia all think she was lost in the slaughter, which explains why no one knows who she is. No one except Kylo knows she is alive and on Jakku. Luke wouldn't have dropped her there with that jerk of a scrapyard manager. Kylo was just trying to get rid of her and forget her without having to kill her (conflict). I feel like its the only way this all makes sense.

Anyway, I just thought of it. Sorry if it's a rehash and is already out there. As I said, feel free to merge if appropriate.

He definitely seems to have a soft spot for her which can be interpreted many different ways. It's obvious that she's had exposure to force use as a young child, we just don't know who although there aren't exactly many candidates. I do think that it will NOT be as obvious as what this film implies so far.

My bold prediction is Luke sent her there because his wife became seduced by the Dark Side. This was to protect Rey from her dark mother.

This explains why Rey and Luke were not involved in the academy incident - because Luke was bringing her to Jakku when Kylo betrayed the academy.

I think Kylo may have wanted to return for Rey at some point so he would have an apprentice that was as strong in the Force as he is. He did offer to train her.
If Rey is Luke's daughter he may know that Kylo didn't kill her, but doesn't know where she is.

I go with the idea too. Rey is his sister and he wiped not only her memory, but Han nd Lea's too, to hide her from a great danger ( of turning to the dark side herself?) Remember that Luke almost killed his father too to protect Lea from the darkside.. Ben solo was torn, but killed Han thinking it was the only way to protect Rey.

Yeah I go with the "Mind wipe" idea as well. It seems from the movie that Kylo's specialty is messing with people's minds. Force-mind-wipe Rey. I'm thinking if She is Han or Luke's kid, they just think she was lost in the slaughter though, no mind wipe necessary for them maybe?

When Rey touches Luke's lightsaber she sees a series of events he experienced:

-Bespin, the battle between Luke & Vader.
-Luke clutching R2 with his mechanical hand.
-The massacre at the Academy, felt by Luke through the Force. The novel makes it clear the the previous scene, Luke first falls to his knees before clutching R2, similar to Yoda experiencing Order 66 or Obi Wan the destruction of Alderaan.
-Finally, Rey being dropped off on Jakku.

Luke had to have been on Jakku.

But Luke was not on Starkiller fighting Kylo...That was also in the vision. And she didn't see that ship leaving Jakku from Luke's point of view, but her own. So it is also a vision of her own experiences/future without Luke. (IMO) Also, Luke leaving Rey on Jakku wouldn't be very Luke-like. He couldn't just leave like that, knowing that one of his wards, a small child, was in a very dangerous situation like living on Jakku. I beleive he was heartbroken, beleiving that all his Jedi were killed by Kylo. So he went into exile, like Yoda. If Luke would have known that Rey was alive, I think he would have stayed and watched over her like Obi-wan. But he believed he had lost it all...until Rey shows up at then end.

Some have pointed out that in the novelization, whomever left Rey on Jakku called her "sweetheart", and inferred that the person must have been female, and someone who actually cared about Rey. But I could see someone saying that sarcastically. I also could imagine an older brother calling his very little sister "sweetheart"- actually pretty much anyone could call a little bitty girl "sweetheart," especially if they were trying to reassure her of their good intentions. Whether or not those intentions were truly good.

The other thing is- Rey said she's waiting for her "family". That, to me, is quite a bit different than waiting for her "parents". It implies there is at least one sibling or other non-parental relative involved, like a cousin, grandparent, aunt or uncle.

I personally believe, with what has now come out about Obi-Wan Kenobi speaking to her as a Force ghost as she's touching Luke's lightsaber, that this implies that Obi-Wan in addition to possibly some of the other ghosts, have been with her, watching her, her whole life. I think this would be a perfect example of how she's been able to survive. She's been guided.

the OP posits that Kylo Ren left Rey on Jakku (the timeline is fuzzy), but with regard to this i've been thinking about the Millenium Falcon.

is it really just convenient storytelling that it ended up in Unkar's scrapyard?

Han and Rey piece together a story about Ducain and the Irving Boys, suggesting the Falcon has changed hands quite a bit. someone else here who agreed that maybe Kylo put Rey on Jakku (sorry, i can't remember who and can't find the original post) suggested that Ren stole his father's ship to do it.

seems far-fetched and i don't know if any of this actually makes any sense whatsoever (like, logistically and in terms of the timeline i can't really reconcile it), but it's been nagging me that someone managed to steal the Falcon from Han Freakin' Solo.

so it might make sense that Han was less pressed to fight for it if the person who actually originally stole it from him was his own son.

and this could explain the apparent coincidence of the Falcon happening to be on Jakku.

    thoughts?

Wait I forgot if it's mentioned in TFA, but how did it leave Han Solo's hands ?

I agree 100% Kylo left Rey on Jakku. In the novelization Kylo says "It is you" to her when they meet.

:D even Han doesn't know who stole it from him.

ha! ~ Han thinks it was Ducain, or has cause to know Ducain had it at one point, but yes, it could be considered ambiguous.

but i still can't quite reconcile a timeline. Rey would have been about 5, making Ben about 15. that lines up with the "boy" who turned on Luke's jedi temple, but we don't know how long the Falcon has been missing and there has been a lot of suggestion (or even confirmation) that the temple incident happened more recently.

that is, if we assume Rey was spared at the temple. maybe the events are unrelated. 'tis a mystery.

also: someone posited (and reasonably so) that "It is you" could just be referring to the awakening. i originally read it as he definitely knew her (and still kinda do), but i can see that alternate interpretation as well now ~ and, in fact, can see that they might have cut the line to avoid confusion.

This is an amazing theory, but since Lor San Tekka knew Kylo Ren previously then he would have possibly known if Kylo left Rey on Jakku. LST had the map to Luke so why wouldn't he tell him or send a message? Maybe Luke knew all along but that seems like really bad parenting, even for a Skywalker.

I wouldn't even be shocked if LST was some sort of guardian over Kuke's Jedi academy .

that's assuming Luke knew Rey was on Jakku? also assumes Rey is Luke's? i thoroughly agree it's horrifc parenting, which is why i think neither of these things can be true.

but you raise a good point: how do we reconcile the coincidence of Lor San Tekka? and if Ben dumped Rey on Jakku, you'd think he'd be a little more nervy about returning (though he was stupidly quick to kill LST).

Not someone we know yet. Rey's family was in debt with Ankar Plutt and they left the girl thinking they will come back and pay the debt but for some reason, they couldn't.

Kylo was far too young. Luke is unlikely for it will be real poor behaviour from a jedi.

this is probably the case ~ i still feel strongly it might have been Ben, but yes, he would have been awfully young. but he's the only character we know who would be irresponsible enough to do it.

so the alternative, yes, is that Rey was ditched by people we don't know under circumstances we don't know. and the Falcon and Lor San Tekka are just ghastly coincidences.
