Leia will die in the yellow scroll that starts all the Saga films. This is unfortunate.

But that's the way it is. I'm sure there are some people for whom Leia needs to appear in IX, but for me (and many others) Carrie Fisher is Leia. When I was talking about the film with my mother she told me that whenever Leia appeared onscreen, she couldn't have stopped thinking about the fact that she's gone. The reality of this situation is sad, don't get me wrong, but we should respect it and let Leia become one with the Force.

I agree that Leia should not be recast. Leia basically passed the leadership mantle to Poe at he end of TLJ. Her brother is now one with the force. It is now up to the next generation to carry on the fight. Leia can die in peace off screen and I would not mind if Episode IX starts the with her funeral. Her death can play a part on how it will affect the new big three (Rey, Poe,Finn).

The one thing you are leaving out is that, in real life, people die all the time, and often it is NOT expected. How many people thought Carrie would die last December? David Bowie in January of 2016? I could go on and on. The reality is that, if they are smart, they have Leia die off screen. Hell, look at the fume right now about TLJ. If they recast Princess Leia that would break the darn internet. In a way that Kim Kardashian and her booty can only dream of breaking it.

I though when she got blown out of the air lock would have been an appropriate time for Leia to end. Her character doesn't do much after that to be honest.

They have recast Han so I can't see why they can't recast Leia. I would rather an unknown, but really the actress that most embodies Leia is the one you want with extensive auditions to find the one.

The recast for Han is for a younger Han set in a totally different period so unsure how that is comparable.

This isn't real life. This is in the context of a three part story. To simply say she died in the opening scroll and flippantly throw away one of the central figures of the saga is lousy storytelling.

How it should be done, wether she dies in the crawl or in a terrible accident at the beginning of the movie, they should burry her on Naboo, next to her mother. They can use a closed coffin or maybe a puppet and mirror the scene of Padmé in ROTS. That should be a proper and honour full ending for the character, together with some amazing music of maestro Williams.

I agree, and while I wasn't crazy about the Young Leia CGI of VII, surely they've gotten better with it.

IIRC, KK made that statement about Leia not being in ep IX back in April, right after Carrie's relatives said Leia was going to be in the film, via CGI and unused film clips. But then the director changed. So is that decision still valid? What if JJ wanted her back? It just seems a very strange end for a beloved & important character. It also implies she will not even be back as a Force Ghost, and that is very sad, indeed.

That would be very fitting. I think a closed casket would be perfect. Would be a great scene

Seems to me that having a time jump of at least few years would make it far easier to facilitate the selling of the concept of Leia's passing... but how to pull it off, (onscreen vs offscreen) will be an interesting debate. Also, now that JJ is back in the mix, are all options now on the table behind closed doors? (CGI, recasting, using cutting room floor stuff, etc...)

Dangerous and disturbing this puzzle is. Only JJ could have the answers. But how, and why, harder to answer. Meditate on this I will. (yoda)

off screen but vague....so that a animated movie by pixar can conclude leia's story set between episode 8 and 9

Twilight of the princess: a star wars story with leia organa as the main protagonist. made exclusively by pixar and brad bird

Leia Organa, rey, finn and poe are at their lowest point. The first order is stronger than ever under Kylo Ren whom is looking for a ancient world that he read off of Luke skywalkers journals. Rey is dealing with her failure to complete her training, Poe is dealing with his complacency with the destruction of the resistance, Finn is dealing with his failure to save it, Rose is dealing with her feelings for Finn, Kylo is being haunted by Luke. Luke tells Leia that Ben solo is Kylo ren because of him. Leia is angry about it and is about to leave when Luke tells Leia about a world that Kylo ren is after...THE PLANET MORTIS!!! kylo ren knows the story on how anakin was able to control the ones from mortis, and how they died. but according to luke they reappear again in another time and another place every time they die.

Leia must go on a journey while dealing with a body that is failing her while also learning to come to terms with her mortality and legacy, rey goes on a journey to try to make it up to herself for not saving ben solo from the dark side, Finn is going with them to keep Rey safe with Poe co,ing to make it up to leia. Leia is while dealing with mortality must learn to forgive Luke and anakin. It is also revealed that Leia has something special within her....a kind of power that allowed her to pull a superman.

Kylo ren wants to go to mortis to retrieve the power of the dark side SON, with his power Kylo ren can exceed vader in vaders goal...to achieve immortality and godship.

it is a race against time as leia and kylo are on a race to get to mortis, character development happens with leia and her younger friends as she is pursued by the BENDU bird. At some point Leia Meets the bendu, where the bendu reveals the truth

leia has the spirit of the daughter within her, and it is the reason why she survived the raddus, her family is capable of absorbing their power. and that she will be the savior of the balance.

Kylo makes it Mortis, where he sees the dark side son, the son mistakes Ben solo for anakin and says that he saved him :), together they can rule the galaxy!!!! kylo ren is wearing his mask which means the son does not know exactly who ben solo is

but kylo says this "you will never share power with me, because i have no intention of sharing any of it with you"

Kylo slashes the son across the face and grabs the son by the neck and absorbs the sons power, becoming a godlike being. the son dies after realizing that ben solo is worse than he is.

Leia and the gang arrive on mortis to see ben solo as a demonic dark god. Rey, Poe and Finn are quickly injured. Kylo grabs Rey and says that he will make her love him.

Leia forgives her brother and father and embraces the power she feared her whole life...She battles Kylo ren in a wizarding duel as the universe hangs in the balance.

Leia realizes that she can destroy mortis, and ending mortis means the cycle of power will continue, but to start this would require her to destroy the planet by absorbing both the light and the dark within her. This would kill her and she comes to terms with her mortality.

Leia absorbs ben solo new dark side powers, ben solo realizing what her mother is doing begs her to stop, that she should not condemn him to mortality and that together they can start over. But leia says that Ben can start over with someone else, and that she will always be with him and kisses ben solo goodbye. Ben solo vanishes and wakes up in the finalizer emotionally devastated

Leia is exausted as the power leaves her, the planet mortis falls apart. Rey begs her not to go, while poe and finn watch in sadness. Leia says that she fought the good fight and that it is their turn to make their own choices in life. Rey, finn and poe vanish as well, Leia left to herself sits on a rock and sees her father anakin and her brother Luke as the planet vanishes.

luke and anakin: we are so sorry princess, for everything

    leia: I know...will it hurt?

Luke: its just like falling asleep

she closes her eyes as a flash of light consumes her...we than hear a baby girl laughing, indicating that leia may have been given "a second chance"(reincarnation) but also paying homage to the fact that leia's character has inspired other strong female characters and that she is never gone.

rey wakes up with the others, as they mourn leia death, putting a memorial in alderaan asteroid field to honor her as the last of the original trio

I don't think she should be recast. Her death should be mentioned in the opening crawl. With Luke and Han gone her will to live faded like Padme's or something like this. Should have killed her off in TLJ, now there are only cheesy options left. If anything I would want her to be CGI like Tarkin but... buuuut in form of a hologram. This would reduce the uncanny valley to a minimum and we could see her die in a spacebattle during her final, emotional speech.

Leia dying in the opening crawl is the worst option by a long shot. That is just so far beyond unacceptable in my opinion. She's not only one of the big three, she's one of the big two, more significant than Han Solo. She's a Skywalker! What if Luke died in the opening crawl? They are on the same level. That's absolutely absurd. I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but they need to somehow resolve Leia's story without Carrie Fisher. She doesn't need to have a big role in the film, she could even die in the opening sequence, but her death HAS to at least be a plot point in 9, it cannot be something that gets tucked under the rug. I could see Leia's death being something that starts the plot in motion at the beginning of the film.

Now she could be in just a few scenes, she could be partially CG, parts of her performance could be pieced together from existing footage, or she could be a full on recast. I know a lot of fans have well justified fears, but I would be ok with any of these options, including a recast. Who would play this new, possibly partially CG'd Leia? I've said this before, but I'll say it again...Kate Mulgrew. The woman who gave us Captain Janeway would do a great job in the role, and they even look similar these days. Leia and Janeway exist in similar sliver of badassery in my mind. Also the Star Trek / Star Wars crossover would be a nice bit of icing on my nerd cake.

Check it out...If Carrie hadn't been around for 7 and 8, I would have totally accepted her as General Leia.

No one. In my opinion, we will not see Leia on the screen anymore. She will manage Rebellion from behind the scenes. The heroes will mention her, but Leia herself will not show. At most, we will see her as a hologram, or hear her voice.
