So, what are some good examples of Desplat's soundtrack themes that might give a good idea of what his Star Wars score might sound like.

The clip of Lily's Theme from the last Harry Potter flick isn't doing it for me at all. Something that strays more than briefly from a sustained 7-minute C# would be nice to hear.

The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. They're super super dark and ominous scores but great. This guy is a great composer but I am wondering how different he will make the score for Rogue One.

I found this just now. I have no idea how representative it is of Desplat's work, but a lot of what I'm hearing here tends to sound not only rather bland but also pretty damned similar from one score to the next.

He's a great Texture guy, but doesn't usually have the strongest themes. His strongest work in my opinion is the stuff he does for Wes Anderson. Fantasitic Mr Fox, Grand Budapest Hotel, and my personal favorite Moonrise Kingdom. But those are very whimsical. Not likely what you'll see from him for Star Wars. My guess is we get something similar to his Harry Potter stuff. Dark, textural, but not heavy in leit motif.

This is a good one, reminds me of the Jedi Plague.

Joe12Hawk, Lily's Theme is exactly what turns me off, not just about Desplat, but about so many modern film composers in general.

Problem is, the theme doesn't go anywhere. It basically just sits there on a C# for seven minutes. Does it create a dark and moody texture? Sure. But creating texture is only part of the game when it comes to scoring a Star Wars movie. The music has to move - not just in the sense of moving theatergoers emotionally, but also in terms of creating a sense of physical movement, and of moving the plot along from one shot/scene to the next.

Especially if we're talking about a movie about starfighter pilots, which Rogue One apparently is.

Droning along on one chord doesn't really do any of that. And the bland, one-chord drone approach seems to be all too common to Desplat's scores, at least from what I'm finding as I delve into his stuff on YouTube.

I sure hope he comes up with something a helluva lot better for Rogue One.
