What about Kylo dying, but coming back? Would this count as him dying?

I change my mind over this all the time, but today I think I’ll just say Hux.

If he’s a double agent he could be this year's bothans, dying to bring an important message...

If he is a vessel for Palpatine/Snoke/Plagueis/other (one of my pet theories) he might be disposed of after his usefulness is over and done with. Funny, was just posting about Darth being a possible contraction/portmanteau of Dark Lord of the Sith... it just hit me that Hux could be a truncated form of ‘HorcrUX’ (shout out to the Harry Potter fans). Eh? Eh?!

If he has little importance to the plot he’s a disposable bad guy regardless.

I don’t think the main three young leads will die in case they want to do Eps X, XI & XII in however many years. I know, I know, this is the end. But we’ve been told that before. Just saying it’s possible.

Why destroy the Falcon? Hmm. ALTHOUGH... another thought occurred... one of my status posts had a jokey response from @Meister Yoda about R2 having his memories transferred to BB-8... now I’m not ok with that (!) but what if the Falcon had its memory banks/systems (who we now know is partly L3-37 from Solo) transferred (back) to a droid to live on that way? It could be a thematic echo of any possession/body swapping plot points in the movie. Hmm.

Artoo and (I guess... I suppose if he must...) Threepio need to survive. I don’t currently imagine a good way that they die in a such a way I would be ok with ... well, Artoo dying anyway. I could take Threepio going probably. But I think they will make it.

Also, I think Leia might just get out of it alive. If they didn’t film her dying, why create the problem to solve? I mean she could die in a big explosion I guess like many of us probably thought she was going to the first time we saw TLJ, but I think it’d be nice if she was there at the end of the film... maybe give her a medal this time (I think that could be a proper tear-jerker honestly).

 

I think Kylo is most likely. Hux is right up there with him. A good guy could get offed but I’m not sure which one.

Lando and Chewie are going to make a sacrifice play that saves the resistance in the final space battle, they are going to lose their lives and the falcon in the process

 

I'm rather confident thar Artoo will survive this film for at least three reasons:

1. Lucas said when making the Prequels that the Saga is basically a story recounted by R2-D2 a hundred years after the films wrap up. Obviously this point is not canon, and we all know Lucas' intentions shift over time.
2. R2-D2 is one of the most valuable characters to Disney for the simple fact that they own all rights to his performance. Depiction of any of the other main characters require some kind of negotiation with talent. Not only is Lucasfilm free to use all art and sound effects for R2 in perpetuity, they can conceivable repurpose him in future Sagas forever without worrying about a performer passing away or turning down the job. I see R2's death being a dealbreaker at corporate.
3. R2-D2 is basically indestructible. He was obliterated in space in Clone Wars, and could still be repaired into his old self.

Chewie, R2, C3PO, and the Falcon (and now I would even argue BB8) are the enduring common thread that should always be present and run through Star Wars. They are iconic and do not require a specific actor to play them. While some may argue that Anthony Daniels is C3PO so much so that nobody else can play him, the same was said about Peter Mayhew and Chewie.... and yet I feel that Chewie has still continued after Mayhew's death in a very believable and honorable way. Joonas Suotamo has been an absolute pleasure. Anthony Daniels' voice is really what makes C3PO who he is though, so I can better understand the argument about him....

Nonetheless, these are the kind of "characters" who have an undetermined lifespan (or exceedingly long in the case of Chewie) in that universe, such that there is no need to "kill off" the characters. These are the kind of characters that if you kill them off, you kill off the heart of Star Wars. Disney wants to monetize Star Wars and their investment rather than "kill" it, so they would be very ill advised to dispense with any of these kind of characters.

 

I never knew how badly I needed to see Leia be given her own medal until now, I think that would be AMAZING if they were able to pull that off.

Anyway, I think I’m in the minority that could really go either way with Lando –– I like him, but I won’t really be disappointed if he dies. (To be honest, I’d actually be a little miffed to see him survive this trilogy if Leia dies, too, so hopefully that doesn’t happen.) I don’t want to see Chewie die either, that would break my heart.

I think Hux dying is a given, and honestly, as much as I’d like to see Kylo survive and not have the same redemption arc that Vader had, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him die, too. The main heroes (Rey, Finn and Poe) will probably all survive (1) so that we can have a happy ending, and (2) in case they decide to revisit these characters for another trilogy later on, as others have stated. If any of those characters are dying, it’s probably Poe because he was originally supposed to die in The Force Awakens.

 

The Falcon is surviving because they just made it one of their center pieces at Galaxy’s Edge

 

Poe may die.
