Who will own the most popular droids now that Luke and Leia are gone?

Before thinking in the possible responses, let's do a quick re-cap on how these droids have exchange hands over the years.

    Before Episode I
R2 belongs to Padme. 3PO belongs to Anakin.

    During Episode I
3PO is left by Anakin, who leaves the droid to help her mom, but since Shmi s a slave, Watto is the actual owner.
R2 briefly assists Anakin during the final space battle, but it's understood that Padme is still the owner.

    Between Episodes I & II
3PO is now owned by Shmi, after Watto sold her to Lars.
    R2 doesn't change owner.

    Episode II
3PO is now owned by Cliegg Lars, after Shmi is taken by the Tusken Raiders.
Later, 3PO is recovered by Anakin, his rightful owner.
Padme keeps owning R2 for the entire movie.

    The Clone Wars
Not mentioned on screen, but all indicates that Anakin and Padme formally traded droids.
R2 becomes Anakin's astromech droid during most of his missions.
    3PO becomes Padme's valet.

    Episode III
    No changes at the beginning.
Both at the end are taken by Bail Organa.

    Between Episodes III & R1
    Both are owned by Bail.

    R1
Both end up under Leia's care after boarding her ship when joining the Battled of Scarif

    Episode IV
    They start as Leia's droids.
Both are owned by the Jawas, after being kidnapped.
Both are owned by Owen Lars, after purchasing them from the Jawas.
Both are "owned" by Kenobi after Luke tells him that they belong to him.
Both are owned back by Leia after she's rescued and Bail and Kenobi killed.
R2-D2 goes "on loan" to Luke for the final assault to the Death Star. It's not evident that he's the owner.

    Between IV and V
There is no evidence that anything changed here. Perhaps Luke spent more time with Leia's R2-D2, which would explain why he ends up with him. R2-D2 may have transitions to become Luke's droid.

    Episode V
R2-D2 owned by Luke for the majority of the movie.
C3-PO owned by Leia for the entire movie.
R2-D2 is recovered by Leia when Luke left the droid at Cloud City.

    Between V and VI
R2-D2 owned by Leia again. This is confirmed in Forces of Destiny S2.E6 (Bounty Hunted) where Leia, Chewie and R2-D2 visit Maz Kanata.

    Episode VI
    C3-PO and R2-D2 start as Luke's droids.
They are owned by Jabba the Hutt when Luke hands them as a gesture of good faith.
After rescuing Han, killing Jabba and leaving Tatooine, we see another change: C3-PO goes back to Leia and R2-D2 to Luke.
In Endor, when Luke is taken prisoner, R2-D2 is briefly owned by the Ewoks. Then returned to Luke and then left under Leia's care when Luke leaves to meet Vader again.
C3-P0 starts as owned by Leia. When the rebels are captured by the Ewoks, C3-PO is under the care of the Ewoks. Although it could be argued that this should represent his first time as an emancipated droid, with an owner. Then he ends up as Leia's droid again.

    Between VI and VII
C3-PO seems to be owned by Leia during this period.
R2-D2 was owned by Luke at least until the time Ben Solo destroys Luke's Jedi Academy. When Luke disappeared, R2-D2 goes back to Leia's hands.

    Episode VII
    C3-PO remains as Leia's property.
R2-D2 was owned by Leia for most of the movie, but ends up under Rey's care when she goes to seek out Luke.

    Episode VIII
C3-PO remains as Leia's property. However, during the period Leia was unconscious, we could assume the droid was under Holdo's care briefly.
R2-D2 goes back to Luke. However, the Jedi Master had zero interest in keeping him. R2-D2 goes back with Rey. When she boarded Snoke's ship, R2-D2 is under Chewie's care.
Both, C3-PO and R2-D2 end up as Leia's droids at the end.

    Between VIII and IX
Most likely, Leia's death will happen off-screen and within this interval. So, the question is, what's going to happen with these droids?
It's quite interesting to see how many times these droids have change hands up to this point.

    Episode IX
Most likely, Poe won't be the owner. Although BB-8 has already shared adventures with Rey, Finn and Rose, we know that the legal owner is Poe, and he wouldn't need another droid.
Rey seems to be sharing the Falcon with Chewie. Who can ask for more?
Finn and Rose have each other.

My speculation is that we would see C3-PO and R2-D2 emancipated for the first time. That could be something different to see. Droids that don't answer to humans orders because they have gained their right. They have been in so many battles and their rightful owners are gone. Maybe they could answer to "some" humans orders if the droids have a formal rank in the Resistance Army, which could entitle them to give orders to lower-level officials.

What do you people think? Who will own C3-PO and R2-D2 in Episode IX? Will they be emancipated?

All emancipated droids in SW up to this point end up being bounty hunters or assassins.
An interview will be coming soon where it will be announced that true SW fans who really understand the sequel trilogy cannot relate to Artoo or Threepio.

I voted for emancipated. They can certainly manage / cause enough chaos / get through situations well enough on their own =)

Beyond that, I would prefer to see them get some meaningful scenes together in IX.

R2 was offline for 99% of TFA.

Then R2 and C-3PO spent so much time apart in TLJ.

As of IX, I hope to see them reunited again (independently, if possible for at least one good scene, from BB-8, who I also love) and contribute to the cause. And then maybe a second scene together with BB-8 (and perhaps other droids).

As they stand among the very last remnants of the Original Trilogy heroes, my hope is that they will not be relegated to the background and treated as unimportant or irrelevant.

BB-8 is great and, like Rebels' Chopper, quite capable and independent, but R2 and 3PO are still, to me, the great droid duo in this saga, having shared in so many missions and adventures.

    (bb-8)(chopper)

    (r2-d2 2)(c-3po)

And, at the end of it all, it was, as Lucas once mention, R2 who was originally supposed to relate all of Star Wars history to a Keeper of the Whills, who would later inscribe it in the mythical Journal of the Whills.

R2 is the family droid of the Skywalker's and was Luke's droid. if Luke is gone and the Skywalker's are now gone too, R2 should destroy himself to be with the family.

R2 was just a random droid on Padme's ship. He doesn't have to be with a Skywalker.

sorry for the amusement but can droids commit suicide. I am no ambassador but I have suffered quite badly in life with mental health issues. I hated reading parts of the TLJ novel about Luke wanting to die. I found it quite distasteful in all honesty. I really hope they don't do the same story line for the droids. I'm guessing BB8 with Poe unless we see Rey in an X wing. R2 in the falcon am not sure about my favourite threepio at all :'(

I can see them serving the Resistance of their own volition, but as far as ownership goes, I actually kind of think Billie Lourd's character should keep an eye on them from now on. It would just kind of "sit right" with me, you know?

In ep IX, perhaps you still don't know, but Kylo Ren boards the Falcon.
Artoo succeeds in hiding inside the ship, due to of its small height, and because he is just seen as a random astromech.
But the silly C3PO, who stays dragging by the battlefield, is taken prisoner. He will then make the "mirror jump" comparing to its ancestor K2-SO : he will be reprogrammed by Kylo, and jump from the Rebellion side to the Empire army (you know, it rhymes, especially considering that 3PO suit was light in the beginning but the droid will end in the dark, mirroring the fact that K2SO suit was dark in its beginning but the droid ended up in the light side).

Maz Kananta has a protocol droid friend named ME-8D9 or Emmie, who does not belong to anyone but stays with Maz. I can see something similar happening in the case of R2D2 and C3PO.

C3PO already plays an important role in the resistance spy network, and is familiar with social niceties and politics. He'll probably be an emancipated droid advisor to whatever new government forms after episode 9, maybe helping Finn, Poe and/or Connix but not belonging to anyone.

R2D2 has witnessed a lot of force related events and visited force strong places. he also seems too outspoken for a political role so he might help Rey set up a new jedi order and give guidance like Professor Huyang in TCW.

but nobody witnessed this, now the Big3 is gone, apart Chew'.
Artoo is supposed to have been dormant since Luke went away, a large part of the resistance may see it as a useless "hunk of junk".

Since the force users and heroes from the PT and OT are gone, their stories and knowledge can be passed to the next generation through R2D2. Even if some of the resistance thought him junk (I don't think Poe ever thought of him as junk especially since he still works on assignments with C3PO), Rey knows he is more than that since she even saw him in her force vision with Luke. I would imagine his contribution to her new jedi order would be invaluable.

My guess is Rey will take R2.

3P0 will go to Poe, who will take on a more leadership like role in the Resistance finally.

Legally, as both Luke and Leia will be dead in IX, their property, including (R2-D2 and C-3PO) will be passed onto their living next of kin....

I wouldn't mind seeing an animation type of movie about them, like Wall-E.

Rey needs to own Artoo and Poe own Threepio. I want to see Rey and Artoo bond more. Artoo giving Rey a Skywalker history lesson would be awesome. Sadly, BB-8 is there to steal screen time and is easier to include in the action due to his maneuverability.

A Pixar / Lucasfilm collaboration wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.
