    With Chancellor Vellacham's death and the presumed deaths of all the Senators, who would be the leader of the New Republic? I presume it would now fall to Leia to lead both the Republic and Resistance and possibly merge the two groups back into one militaristic group against Snoke and the First Order. But I could also see Laura Dern's character as an interim leader.

    According to rumors from a year ago, Laura Dern's character becomes leader of the Resistance after Leia goes into a coma. So, It might not be her. We know how rumors are though. But who knows? With that said, I have absolutely no idea who would be the leader of the NR at this time.

    The republic is in chaos. Some will beg for help from the Resistance or want to side with them. They are lead by Leia then Dern's character.

    Others will swear alligence to the 1st Order seeing the writing on the wall. Others will go isolationist trying to stay out unless bothered.

    I have a feeling BDT' s character and his crime syndicate money/support will be needed by the Resistance.

    Well I voted for Laura Dern's charecter as I feelshe will step up & take over what's left of the Rebuplic Fleet & army hence her probableclash with Leia during the film.
    PoliticallyI have no idea but I could see some systems going it alone while others try to find a peace deal with the FO & some backing LD charecter in combating the FO.

    I voted Laura's character too, it seems likely she's Leia's successor, that's probably why she & Poe will come to verbal blows.

    I don't think she's Leia successor. For me it's more a case of her leading the Republic fleet with Leia in charge of the resistance & having different ideas on how much the military & political operations are run then LD character taking over possibly hostile if anything happening to Leia.

    The New Republic may very well be left in shambles after the attack on the Hosnian Prime system. Not sure if it will carry on or not. Systems may just have to join the Resistance, the First Order, or remain neutral.

    The New Republic was an ineffective and broken system that was doomed for failure. That is part of the reason why Leia left it to start the Resistance (other reasons involve Bloodline spoilers). Leia is definitely leading the Resistance but unfortunately that torch will need to be passed on to someone. Perhaps Laura Dern's character.

    There's clues in the images of Leia's wardrobe in TLJ that we've seen so far. That dress is way too fancy and formal to be something a general would wear.

    Granted, she only wore that after Hosnian Prime was destroyed. Perhaps she was already de facto Chancellor at the end of TFA.

    In my opinion the Republic is basically dead and the galaxy is in chaos with the Resistance and First Order fighting over the scraps

    Edit- forgot to say I thought would be in charge. I suppose I'll buy into the rumors and say Laura Dern's character is taking over as Poe Dameron is basically an Episode V-Episode VI Luke

    Exactly. I feel like the complete annihilation of the New Republic Senate was a parallel of the Emperor permanently dissolving the Imperial Senate in ANH. The last remnants of the Old/New Republic have been swept away and galactic civil war ensues.
