Luke looking out at the horizon reminiscent of him in his youth is one of the most poignant moments of the entire saga so far.

Honorable mention for that Ewok lying on the ground with the John Williams score kicking in as their friend tried to wake them up.

Yoda's death hit me hard. That was the first time I had seen a major character die. Obi Wan died but immediately sort of came back to life by talking to Luke. Tarkin was sort of a main character but he was so completely unsympathetic that it had no effect on me. Yoda's death was a big deal, followed by Vader.

It was a huge toss up between Duchess Satine and Kanan. I ended up choosing Kanan since it was such a rough time in the Galaxy. One of the last few Jedi dies and leaves an Apprentice to deal with everything pretty much on his own. Yes there was Ahsoka, but they did not have the same style of relationship. Duchess on the other hand - it hit hard because she was the ONE entity that would have moved Obi-wan from his Stoicism with the Jedi Order.

    Great poll!

Honestly, I think the clear winner was left off this list. K2-SO is easily the most emotional death scene, at least in the films. The runners up, in my opinion, are Satine and Kanan.

Star Wars deals with death alot, but you rarely feel a deep emotional connection with it. The major deaths in the series--Qui-Gon, Padme, Obi-Wan, Han, etc--deeply affect the characters, but the films kind of hold the audience at a distance from them. It's mythology, and in mythology you don't always have a deep emotional participation with the characters.

    But K2? That was heartbreaking.

I know we didn't see it but......... what about the younglings?!?!

=p I'd have to say it's between Vader and Kanan that hit me the hardest. I would've said Han had the internet not ruined his death the day before I went to watch TFA, so it was expected. But then again, losing your second favorite character is always hard.

For me I'm going to say Luke Skywalker. He has always been one of my favorite characters and while I knew it was a possibility that he could die in TLJ, I didn't think it was going to actually happen and that hit me hard. Plus the last scene with him and Leia hit me in the feels.

Honorable mention also goes to the younglings. They never stood a chance against Darth Vader and his clones.

This is a really difficult question to answer and I wanted to vote for more than one person but in the end I voted for kanan. I think mostly because how his death was handled , the build up and foreshadowing beforehand , the acceptance of his destiny and what happened during the sacrifice and afterwards. I am very attached to the Rebels characters and how their story arcs developed (that’s why I feel Star Wars will work great as a series because you can develop characters more and can go into greater depth )but also Kanan symbolised certain things for me -he was the last Padawan of the Jedi order , he was young and a victim of war and he selflessly gave up his life to save his family . Am not saying the other deaths weren’t noble or sad in Star Wars but the way it was handled in Rebels was just epic . Moreover with Vader , Luke , Han and Obi wan in particular - though they were noble sacrifices I felt like they had had their time , that it was the natural order of things and they had lived their lives and were coming to the end of their life cycles but Kanan willingly gave up his young life for others . He found his path and he knew what was coming but he didn’t stray . He accepted his fate and when it came he did what he had to do . It was heartbreaking to watch and haunting but kanan by his actions conveyed the meaning of what it meant to really be a Jedi .Selfless to the end (kanan)
And now am welling up again just thinking about it :(

Tough, but I went with Luke in TLJ. Such an emotional and powerful final scene for a legend of the galaxy.

I always thought Obi-Wans was the saddest, and even more so as I got older.

I saw Ol' Ben disappear in 1977, and knew that there was so much that he wasn't telling Luke...we all did, but then just to have him expire THAT FAST seemed like a waste, AND THEN seeing the PT and everything that he went through just to get offed by Vader with such little effort...what a loss.

Only an Obi-Wan series (or something of the like) will help somewhat console me at this point.

For me it was Han. The look on his face when Kylo ignited the Lighysaber; first utter shock and then acceptance. I choke just thinking about it.

Anakin’s like “you knew didn't you? About immortality.” Obi, “I told you, ‘strike me down and I will become more powerful than you csn possibly imagine’.” Anakin, “I thought you were bluffing, but when your body vanished on contact with my saber, I was like whaaaaat?!” :p

Saddest death of all was Padme. Apart from the music and dreary visuals, even happy-go-lucky Jar Jar was left looking depressed. And that necklace she was holding...

Han Solo’s death didn’t make me feel sad. I was more confused as to 1) how Kylo could have ignited the lightsaber when both of them were holding it sideways and 2) why Kylo said “thank you.”

I'm surprised Shmi has got so few mentions. She lived as a slave, was parted from her son was taken and tortured to death by Tusken Raiders, not only that but her death had a profound effect on Anakin, his slaughter of all that band of Tusken Raiders was the first time Anakin did a shockingly evil act and worked into his fears of losing Padme. Shmi's death is key moment in Anakin's tragedy.

Obi Wan's death was mysterious but deliberate and as he stayed with Luke it wasn't too sad

Anakin's death was sad but redemptive, it was a good death

Qui Gon's death was sad as he seemed to have a special connection to Anakin and I get the suggestion that it was one of many tragic events bound up with his tragedy. He also seemed to represent an aspect of the Jedi, that they were unfortunately losing . I'd put it as the individual listening to the force over the expediencies of politics.

Silly answer: Peteesa the Rancor in Return of the Jedi. Poor Malakili! [IMG]

Serious answer: In terms of pure sadness, Satine's murder destroyed me the first time I saw it. Grown man tearing up at a 'cartoon'. It was just such pathos, not just for the episode or even entire show itself but the feeling that the impact it had on Obi-Wan as I perceived him was something that informed his character from that moment on... it was like that knowledge instantly worked though all my synapses updating every memory I ever had of watching a Star Wars scene with Obi-Wan in it and changing it forever. Darth Maul you utter *******! And from now on, when Obi-Wan is quiet, or raises a smile, or shows compassion to another being, or when he sacrifices himself for Luke, and everything else in all of Star Wars whether before after that fateful event, it has a sadness attached. And the fact it's the same guy killing someone he loved again... and the music... Just epic.

It reminds me of the One Destiny Tone Poem video... "It will be a hard life. But you will find out who you are."

For me personally - Han Solo as he's probably my most favourite Star Wars character ever. To be fair I was more fuming with anger than sad when it happened but nevertheless :D
