Why am I not excited for this film?

It was sort of a guessing game for me, but I don't know if it was really a big deal, though I would re-watch the trailers multiple times and looked at the reviews before TLJ came out. I guess I was doing too much. I was perfectly fine with the film, aside from disliking/being disillusioned at roughly three moments in the film; it even felt surreal when I watched it.

It's been rather quite quiet for the TROS film-too quiet; they really need to amp up the advertising soon.

 

Well, after ROTS, it will be retconned to her having a lineage. She won’t stay a nobody.

I’m not sure where you get the idea that TROS will retcon Rey’s lineage that was implied in TLJ. I haven’t seen any evidence of that either from the cast, crew, or directors of both films.

I think it’s a little disingenuous to state that making Rey a Kenobi or Skywalker ultimately makes her character more interesting. I personally don’t think it does because it simply ties her character to an original legacy character and makes her story ultimately about that legacy. In my opinion, it makes her character less interesting.

If anything, the fact that she doesn’t have the Skywalker/Kenobi bloodline is refreshing and thematically more powerful because it illustrates a powerful force user coming into her own while not stemming from royalty like Kylo Ren.

When I stated that Rey’c characterization in the sequel trilogy has been lackluster, I wasn’t implying anything about her lineage, but moreso her character’s journey and motivations. Perhaps it’s because Kylo Ren is simply a more interesting character precisely because he is the villain and people tend to find villains more compelling.

 

Actually, there are a number of similar plot points from the OT that TLJ uses. I like TLJ, I do, but some of the content of ideas in TLJ isn't fresh. I appeciate TLJ as the fun-house mirror film that uses content from the past and warps them. To use a Zelda comparison, it's like Majora's Mask at its subjective best and A Link Between Worlds at its subjective worst. Weirdly enough, I think that TLJ actually DID answer questions in TFA, like confirming that Rey did see the island in her dreams in the previous film. How would Luke react to the lightsaber-what happens next.

I mean people really fuss at Luke tossing the lightsaber in TLJ (although Luke's choice of chucking the lightsaber to the side by being distracted to save himself from condemnation and momentarily deciding to not kill the emperor to save/spare his friends from the emperor's tyranny actually comes across as unheroic in ROTJ upon further inspection, even though I guess it's unintentional), but at least TLJ started on the island. A random spaceship didn't sudden arrive at the island at the beginning of the film and blast it to smithereens, preventing some sort of answer.

And there are repercussions to blowing up the First Order's thingy-ma-bob-Starkiller base, which was essentially used for a coup, not necessarily to keep the galaxy in order; unlike in ANH, the thingy-ma-bob was used to threaten and maintain the order of local star systems from the council scene. The First Order is especially mad as a result and blows up the Resistance's base.

 

Yeah, if she has a special lineage, they had to do it in TLJ...for me now it's too late and to retcon it would be a cheap move to please fans i think...

 

If Leia can be made from Luke's lover to sister, anything is possible in SW.

 

Thank you for the perpective. Yes, she is unfortunately a lackluster character, but I actually found her interesting enough in TFA.

I won’t go into where I get the information, but I ask you to remember your feelings towards the retcon of her as a »nobody» when it happens in ep 9. And it will happen. (It won’t be Skywalker/Kenobi, but expect her to come from a «royal line» on par with Kylo’s)
