I realize that's a rhetorical question that no one can answer but myself, and that it is ripe for all kinds of arguments. That isn't my intent, though. It's an honest question: after being overwhelmingly excited for every SW film since 1977, for some reason I'm just sorta "meh" about this one, and I can't pinpoint why.

    I have some ideas, though:

    1. the trailer and promotional material thus far has revealed almost nothing at all, save for a the line "the jedi must end" and, I dunno, porgs. I feel like we haven't been privy to anything especially attention grabbing, and what we have seen hasn't been terribly mind blowing.

    2. the recent spate of bad news has seriously affected my optimism. Between the Han Solo debacle and the fact that Colin Treverrow inspires zero confidence (plus his recently lambasted film), I feel like we're on shaky ground.

    3. Lucasfilm and Pablo Hidalgo repeatedly making statements essentially saying "we had no outline or plans for anything past TFA". so...great. no one knew where snoke or rey were headed. how encouraging.

    BUT ---

I DO think Rian Johnson has huge potential. I DO think the new cast has enormous charisma and talent. I DID think Rogue One and TFA were great (especially R1). But.....something just seems off, perhaps as a cumulative effect from the aforementioned issues I listed.

What are your thoughts? And again, I LOVE star wars. I love what disney has done so far and I even have a greater than average appreciation for the prequels, so I'm not coming at this as a "hater". Far, far from it.

It doesn't take much to get me excited. Its STAR WARS for cryin out loud. When I was a kid I would have loved to have a new Star Wars movie come out every year. You kiddin me? I grew up during the dark times late 80s early 90s Star wars was dead. But I didn't care. Now It's a pretty awesome thing. Not a whole lot of merch, or advertising, like back in the day, or even special edition, but I'll take what I can get.

I know! I've always felt the same way, thus my being perplexed at why I'm suddenly less than ecstatic. Don't get me wrong, I'll be there opening day. And the next. And the next. But somehow I haven't felt the magic this time out and it makes me sad, to be honest. I wanna get back to where I actually have dreams about new SW movies again. Maybe the next trailer will do the trick.

For being a Disney product, I don't see a lot of advertising in general. George was the advertising king. Everything was star wars, it funded the whole franchise. I think that is what is missing. However advertising like that be can mistaken as hype, and have the opposite appeal. Like TFA, I was very worried, so I didn't really get into it, all that much.

The last 60 days they'll have stuff going once tickets go on sale but the hype isn't there like it was pre-TFA. Historically, the popularity of the second Star Wars movie dips compared to the first movie in a trilogy (in North America anyway). It happened in 1980, and it happened in 2002 as well.

But yeah, there was more stuff out in the wild pre-TFA including spoiler outlines based on real leaked material to generate interest and more real teaser videos as well.

Trying to get hyped around the return of notnowacameo old Luke who is cranky and dejected isn't a strong selling point.

After reading your post and rethinking it a bit – I found myself having watched the teaser for TLJ just 8 timers or so (not 100 times like TFA). And the day after it came out, it was only 2 times that day. Maybe it’s just the teaser and not the whole movie, but yes, I can understand your “meh” gut feeling very well.

I feel the same way. But in my case I think there is something to do with my personal life at this point, big changes will come and I think this is diverting my attention from TLJ.
The hype for TFA was much more intense but at the end I just hope they will deliver us a good movie. Probably the appreciation for TLJ will come with the years.

… and if you start with low expectations, they can easily be surpassed. So in the end, that can make for a better experience than expected.
You might even find yourself liking the new AT-M6 walkers when seeing them in action on a big screen, although they smell like a cheap “the-bigger-the-better” rip-off from the original ones.

I'm not that excited either, but I know I probably will when the light goes out and the music starts.
TFA was a different beast, it was the first Star Wars movie after a long time, even after expecting to never get a new SW movie at all.
We didn't have a long wait for Ep 8, we even got a filler episode in between, and we know that Ep. 8 will eventually be released.

I am actually really excited for TLJ. Even more so because there is basically nothing known about it, even the marketing has gone dark. Going into the movie completely blind is going to be so amazing! Just imagine what kind of viewing experience you'll have, that's something to get excited about.

Watching a movie with high expectations is never a good idea. Especially if those expectations are based on things you want to see happen, and not what will actually happen.

I'm not really excited anymore myself, but that's also because there's nothing new to discuss.

I know how the first poster feels. I'm not overly enthusiastic of TLJ because.....

    1. Carries death & how they work with it.

    2. Cranky old Luke .

    3. Rey if she's random & all the mystery around Snoke, Rey, DJ & the KoR. This is Star Wars, not Arthur Conan Doyle.

    4. I think RJ is overrated. Say what you want about JJ. At least 7 felt very Star Wars.

    5. A cheap potential twist like Luke killed Rey's family or the Sith were rite.

Everyone is entitled to his/her own hype/opinion going into TLJ. I was super hyped for TFA and was satisfied. I wasn't all that hyped for RO and was pleasantly surprised. I'm super excited for TLJ and hope...HOPE it exceeds my expectations but realize if it doesn't, its no one's fault but my own.

Great thread. I don't think I can be any less enthused for a Star Wars movie than this one. None of the new ships and vehicles excite me (in fact, they seem to be a continuation of the ugliness of TFA). What little I know about the two new planets aren't particularly interesting. The scope of this movie seems imaginatively bankrupt . Lack of new alien characters (and a distressingly over-reliance on human characters) is troubling. ETC. *HOWEVER* going into the theater with low expectations could work in my favor by having the movie surprise me on how really good it is.

    Indeed, a Great thread.
So, I read this first thing this morn. Been puttin' lotta thought to it (concider when ya posted an when I now am).
    Lots'a other Great Friends
^up there^ put up alotta Great thoughts...
    my take on it -
    - the LFL problems, Han Solo switcheroo, R1 reshoot SNAFU, etc to me Ain't relatable other than its all under LFL. They're Each it's Own Thing.
    C. Trevarrow will be alright, "Henry" did bad ? To me not relatable, entirely diff'rent thing. Others think he won't, that's on them an' them're entitled to have it.
Dunno what/where all you go read/listen to/hear... but for me things like them Speculation threads- "Official Rey, Luke, Kylo Ren" etc ... now this is just s me thing, alright ? I can't go in those, (ya got me In This one though) Sure, they're fun for some which is a good thing, but in there can be bred them High Expectations that're inevitable to a Big Let Down.
The "No outline past TFA, was a surprise to me, to be sure but hasn't wavered me in any way.
Hope anything I said was of a help to ya, Brother.

The excitement for a movie is often juxtaposed with other parallel events in someone's life.

    The birth of a child
    A new job
    Another or new passion...

The Excitement for a new Star Wars movie may be altered by all that.

The reason why I am less excited about 8 that I was for any of the Prequels... well... getting older, really busy at work...
Before I was... Woot! only 250 days left... and counting all of them
Now it's more: Gee! we're only 100 days away.. wow, that goes too fast, wait! Summer has ended!

It's a rational response to your question, maybe I am all wrong.

I was not excited about Rogue One because all I thought about was TLJ. What I hate is the marketing from Disney. It's less than stellar. But I am excited about TLJ, but worried about 9 now.

They got rid of Trevorrow so are you more excited or less excited with the newest debacle? :)
