Why did they have to fly down the trench?

Running the trench did keep the fighters out of range of most of the station's defensive cannons, true. But there were still those two gun towers at the far end of the trench to contend with. Those are the guns the Y-wing pilot is referring to with that line.

I think the Proton Torpedoes would've been intercepted or run out of fule if they fired from too away.

I think the reason they flew down the trench because they knew a diving move would not help the proton torpedos the targeting system could not lock on had Luke not been in the battle with the force had his command those torpedos would not have entered the exhaust port I think Lucas chose this options because he wanted to see a few rebel pilots to die to give Luke the conclusion that the force was needed to destroy the death star.

Or maybe the turbolasers would have destroyed them from afar.

The Trench Run was a homage to the Dambusters film, and all logic swept aside that risked derailing the sequence in terms of believability. For example, the trench turbolasers ... no reason at all for them to be there since the Empire didn't consider that locale a security risk. BUT, they mimic the artillery fire defending the dam in the WW2 film and make for a thrilling sequence in ANH.

All the Turbo Lasers are destroyed in that shot. this is what they look like (in red) if you haven't destroyed them

Using vectors instead of pixels made this one of the best looking games of its generation. It came out in 1983. Developed during the Golden Age of Arcade Games its considered the #4 most popular game of all time

I attribute the trench scene to dramatic appropriateness. A way to do spacebattle interesting and exciting, and to enhance the aerial dogfight element.

    For what it's worth:
Back in the 90s, I experimented with the idea of running above the trench playing X-wing. The game designers did have a lot of laser batteries waiting for you to try just that. Eventually, I found if I bobbed in and out of the trench I could throw the guns off. The trench guns would stop assuming the surface guns had me. As soon as the surface guns started to get their aim a little better, I'd duck back into the trench. Once the trench guns got a better fix on me, I'd jump back out.
I also tried a few times to 'dive bomb' the port. The game didn't give me the distance screen unless I was in the trench, so I really had to eyeball when to make the dive. But I did find the surface batteries had little chance of hitting me while I was that high up. It worked, but it was not definately lacking in excitement.

OMG, you guys are taking me back.. Showbiz Pizza.. 1985.. 4yrs old.. nostalgia..(x-wing)(epic fail)
