I was thinking, instead of training Darth Maul, couldn't Palpatine have just gone to Tatooine and taken young Anakin as his apprentice? He could've purchased Anakin, kidnapped Anakin, or even just killed Shmi and Watto, and it seems to me that any of those would've been easier than:
    1. Orchestrate a war between Naboo and Cato Neimodia to lure out the Jedi
    2. Be lucky enough to have the Jedi have a break down
    3. Be lucky enough for them to make an emergency landing on Tatooine
    4. Be lucky enough for them to find Anakin
    5. Be lucky enough for them to decide to train Anakin even though they were reluctant to do so.

I want to be clear that I'm a fan of the prequels and this is not prequel-bashing. But is there any explanation for why Palpatine made his plan so complicated?

Is it ever confirmed that Palpatine knew who Vader was the whole time?

I always assumed that he had his own plans, and basically did a doubletake when he saw Anakin, not unlike that silly "Distracted Boyfriend" meme.

Could even be why Palpatine allowed Maul to "die"- when he met Anakin, his plans immediately changed. Heck, if we want to get really deep with it, maybe Palpatine made sure that Qui Gon could not teach Anakin, but Obi Wan could, having forseen that Qui Gon's teachings would be too strong.

But I don't know, maybe it's confirmed somewhere that I am unaware of, but I always just assumed Anakin was just as serendipitous of a discovery for Palpatine as he was for the Jedi.

Yeah, it is possible that Palpatine simply didn't know where Anakin was, and maybe his only goal in starting the war was to become Chancellor. But that would mean they found Anakin purely by chance, which would be even more amazingly good luck!

Palpatine makes it clear in ROTS that he knows who Anakin is and how he was created. I gotta think there would be an easier way to find him than just randomly stirring up trouble in the galaxy.

    It's pretty ambiguous, I'd agree.

I think that Palpatine could've certainly sensed Anakin's power and been like "Oh man, that's the kid that Plagueis created" (or whatever the current canon demands). That's doable.

And I'm not sure it necessarily had to be by chance. The Queen's ship could've been guided by the Force to Tatooine, where Anakin was. That was Qui Gon's take, anyway.

I guess it doesn't matter how you look at it, there are some plotholes that need justifying. :p

Because he wanted him to destroy the jedi first.

Palpatine wasn't even aware of Anakin's existence until Dooku told him about the boy that Qui-Gon had brought back from Tatooine. And that happened between Qui-Gon's introduction of Anakin to the Jedi Order and Padme's return to Naboo. This was revealed in the novel, "Darth Plagueis".

    Is that novel still canon?

I mean, even if it's not it's about as good of a jumping off point as we have now, I'm just curious.

I thought only the novels set after "Return of the Jedi" were no longer canon. Has Disney offered a different story to be considered canon?

The 2014 canon wipe included essentially all expanded universe. For instance, KOTOR stuff isn't currently canon either, nor is Shadows of the Empire.

Disney hasn't, to my knowledge, offered an alternative. So, I think there is value in Legends in determine current canon in cases like this. Like I said, it's currently our best jumping off point.

Because the story needed him to be trained by Obi-Wan.

Either way you look at it, there is a fairly legitimate way of justifying Palpatine's actions.

If Palpatine didn't know about Anakin when he showed up one day, it makes sense that he would let the Jedi take care of him because it would save Palpatine time in training him, and Palpatine was already working on his master plan to destroy the Jedi and have the Sith rule the Republic, so he didn't have time to deal with Anakin a whole lot in the prequels.

If Palpatine did know about Anakin before he showed up one day, it makes sense that he would keep it on the down low, and would keep his interactions with him very discreet, because he didn't want the Jedi or Senators snooping around and messing up his plans.

Or perhaps he didn't know of Anakin's existence as a potential Force user until the Battle of Naboo. Palpatine was not omnipotent, yet many people seemed to think he was.

So, are we to believe that "Labyrinth of Evil" is no longer canon? After all, it was a set-up for "Revenge of the Sith".

Especially if Plagueis created Anakin, like it's hinted in RotS.
    No pre-Disney book is canon.

The old canon explained Anakin's birth as the Force striking back against Plagueis' and Sidious' experiment (Plagueis novel). They didn't know about Anakin or his power until Qui-Gon found him. They then realised they had to stop Qui-Qon from training the boy, but the funny thing is I reckon both Plagueis and Sidious wanted the boy as their own apprentice as they never intended on killing young Anakin, only Qui-Gon.

The Book of Sith and the Plagueis novel both mentioned Gardulla the Hutt. Anakin and Shmi were once the property of Gardulla before she gambled them away. Plagueis had a business partership with Gardulla that he kept private. He financed her pod-racing events and he would buy slaves from her to use as test subjects for his own midichlorian experiments. He knew about the Jedi prophecy so he wanted to inverse it by creating his own powerful apprentice to destroy the Jedi. Tatooine proved to be an ideal location for his tests as it was outside of the Republic's system. Anakin could've been the result of one of these experiments.

It will be interesting if the new canon explores the relationship between Plagueis and Gardulla again.

Reading all of this makes me ill to my stomach. I never realized how much the STAR WARS fandom wants the franchise wrapped in simple-min
I am so sick to my stomach. I wish to God that Lucas never sold the franchise to Disney. Everything is going to the dogs.

Well, unless the official canon provides alternative, or contradicts with the old one I see no problem with considering unofficial canon canon.

At least Star Wars can continue now. With so many materials coming up in the future I'm pretty sure you'll once say that the Disney purchase was worth it. I already said it after Rogue One.
