Why is everyone here so obsessed with Darth Plagueis??

Ok, so I am a hardcore OT fan, and that's pretty much the extant of my Star Wars knowledge. I don't like the prequels, so I've only watched them a handful of times. I haven't followed the EU since the 90s. As I've been browsing this forum for the past year or more, my eyes always glazed over at the countless Plagueis threads. I've been meaning to ask for a while: why the Plagueis obsession in relation to the new films? I'm genuinely curious. Thanks!

I'll say that (and this is solely speaking for myself), the idea of Plagueis was a tantalising hint in RotS. It's like how we knew Vader was a bad dude, but then we met Palpatine and he was worse (like way worse). So it's kinda the question of, okay, what kind of guy then trained *that* guy?
In addition I think that it does more to justify the idea of the Sequel Trilogy (not that they wouldn't have made it anyways). We have links between the PT and OT aplenty, and the ST and OT are already pretty strongly intertwined, but there's some of us fans that don't want the ST to completely dismiss the PT, and Plagueis seems like a good -- fairly logical -- way to build some of those bridges.
Like I started with though, that's simply my thoughts on the situation, I'm sure others have their take on the reasoning.

I like what AlienofDoom had to say. Well put.

Kabe - I'm pretty similar to you. OT fan, stopped reading any EU stuff a long time ago when I realized Lucas didn't consider any of it "real" so for me it just seemed like a waste of time (and most of it was pretty terrible anyway)

I hated HATED HATED the PT - I can count what I liked with less than all my fingers - but one of the those things I did like was the Opera scene with Anakin and Palpatine.

Darth Plagueis is one of the very few Sith who are now canon - and like AoD said he sounded like a complete badass. The "father" of Darth Vader. The guy who schooled Sideous. Just a bad, bad dude.

And since he was ultimately responsible for creating the Skywalker line - and this saga is the story of the Skywalkers - I feel it's brilliant and fitting to bring the story full circle by telling his story and realizing he's been pulling strings in the background all this time.

Why the obsession? Like Kenobi said, "Oh, this is going to be easy...."

Darth Plagueis is the baddy we all want because: "The power to cheat death" is his greatest accomplishment. And as stated above, who doesn't want to meet THAT guy? The dude wise enough to teach Palpatine and strong enough to overcome being murdered by him.... yeah he is definitely the droid I'm looking for.

The other thing I'd add is that Plagueis as a character is VERY "Star Wars" in a way that is far too convenient and far too fitting for his lasting position in canon to be a coincidence. We have to remember that TFA is Episode 7 in the central Star Wars story, a continuation of the PT and OT and not a reboot. Plagueis offers the only way for the writers to introduce a big bag that is BIGGER and BADDER than Palpatine and Vader in a way that makes sense within context whilst also not devaluing the story that was told before, and not resorting to cheese to retcon in a bigger bad guy.

He is, quite frankly, the perfect villain not just for the new trilogy but for the franchise as a whole.

Is DP an immortal Sith or is it the idea that regardless of who wins at any given time, evil or good will always rise again? DP seems to be a bit of a stretch.

The power to cheat death, yup, that qualifies as immortal. I hope Plagueis is ressurected not we don't get a crappy Sidious only thought he killed me monolouge. Any fan that doesn't get the obsession soon will, it is unavoidable!

I have been pretty hard on the DP theory of late but I think there are several reasons why it sticks.

No one has gotten over the idea of "The Ancient Fear." The idea reeks of an undead revanent villain. DP is the one rumored to play with matters of life and death and is one of the few still Canon.

Next is the connection to Anakin. DP is the evil that spurred the Force to create life. People like the symmetry of a the baddie that started the train moving would show up and reek more havoc on things.

why the obsession? people have it cooked up that he created the Skywalker line and that he's immortal.

the only canon mentions of Darth Plagueis are in RotS, where he is mentioned as being dead and able to manipulate life via the Force, and the Tarkin novel, which confirms that he taught Darth Sidious.

other than that, there's really no connection to this character in canon. prior to the old EU wipe there was a book about Plagueis that gives the idea that he and Sidious created Anakin Skywalker by meddling with the Force in an attempt to create life. this has yet to make it to the new canon, and i personally doubt it will.

at a push they will make Snoke everything Plagueis was (except being Sidious' master), but they won't be using the name again.

    that's my 2 cents.

I don't understand the Plagueis frenzy either. He was created by George Lucas and mentioned in ROTS briefly. Everything is else is from books, one written like 7 years after ROTS was released; is that even canon and if so, does canon even matter now? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Because there is only one Dark Lord of the Sith, powerful and Wise enough to rule them all.... and his name is Plagueis.

For me, ROTJ felt like the end of the saga. It was the completion of the story of Darth Vader. It is true that Lucas didn't set out with that story in mind, but with ROTJ and then the PT that is what it became. Lucas confirmed this by saying that it was the end and that he had basically written into his will that no more would be made. There just wasn't a story.

When I first heard about the ST, the first thought I had was "where do they go now"?
Unless you set it well into the future and started a new story I couldn't see how the Skywalker tale could continue without feeling tacked on. Made just for the money, not because it would make a satisfying story.

However, when it was all going ahead and the old cast returned I gave thought to how they would continue it - what would Lucas do? The only thing that made sense to me was bringing in Plagueis. Without contradicting anything, it could be written that he cheated death and was the creator of Anakin Skywalker. Only with his destruction could there be a true ending to the Skywalker story, with Anakin/Vader still being centre stage somewhat. It felt clean, not a retcon (because of being established in ROTS) and threw up many interesting ideas (cursed Skywalker bloodline/immorality/Force ghosts stuff).

That's why I have been "obsessed" with Plagueis.

I wish people would get over that idea. TPTB have said the film started as "episode 7" went to "shadow of the empire" and then finally "the force awakens". If you track down the origins of that rumor, it leads to an anonymous post on a message board. It is as credible as the rumor of justice league being split into 2 films.

Also, "ancient fear" is literally just a fear from the past. It doesn't imply undead, or immortal or risen from the dead. It could be an ancient order that remerges, it could be a really old alien ala yoda or Maz. It could be like peoples "fear of snakes". That is an ancient fear without implying immortal snakes.

I think a lot of the Plaggy love comes from how great the novel was. Easily top 3 EU books, IMO. Also, if people are forced to shoehorn in a previous character as snoke, Plaggy is the most natural fit.
