Why is so little known about this film?

My memory isn't perfect, but I don't recall hearing much about TFA before the final script was completed. I imagine more about Rogue One will leak out once it moves into production.

 

It's simply because this is new territory for SW and they're using R1 to understand how to successfully sell a SW Spinoff .

 

I'm still amazed that we've heard and seen almost nothing about ROGUE ONE. Disney and Lucasfilm have done an incredible job of keeping a cloak on it. I do expect to start seeing some ramping up of promotion as TFA dies down. They've got to start getting the fans frenzied.

 

If not for SWNN and the Cantina I would barely hear about this movie...are you sure we didn't just make it up?

 

I fully expected to know more about this movie by now. If principle photography is finished by now, it has to be getting very close. There's no arguing that Gareth Edwards and company have benefited from having TFA as a distraction, but even still, I wonder how the rumor mill has remained so quiet. At this point, I think I know as much about Episode 8 as I do about Rogue One.

Part of it, certainly, is that people just aren't as interested in Rogue One. Disney's marketing department is going to face some big challenges with this movie.

 

It's early days, TFA has just been released all the focus is in that right now but come the new year rogue one rumors will start I expect alot of reveals at Celebration in July.

 

There has been one ser that has leaked for the entire film. We know virtually nothing else and
we are less than a year away. What did we know at this time in the TFA schedule?

I'm afraid that the secrecy will raise expectations beyond what they should be. I went in to TFA expecting to find out lots of things that weren't there.

 

Now that TFA has been out for a few weeks I'm sure we will be seeing more information on Rogue One.

 

They do seem to be trying to temper expectations, as far as the amount of spoilers to expect going forward. If Lucasfilm has learned from TFA, I would expect far fewer concept art leaks, and I would be shocked if another shooting schedule makes it past security.

On the other hand, I'm also sure Lucasfilm understands that some leaks help keep their core audience focused on Star Wars, which in turn drives the hype machine - and it's hard to beat that free advertising.

 

I don't know how much tighter it can get .

 

Personally, I don't see much risk. Even with everything that got out about TFA, there were still all kinds of stories right before the premiere about how they kept everything so secret. I also don't think leaks effected the opinions of many fans - the people that were unhappy would have been unhappy regardless of whether the "bad news" came from spoilers or in the theater. If anything, I think word of Luke's small part actually helped, because it gave people a chance to get used to the idea before they sat down in the theater - therefore fewer feelings of disappointment during the film itself.

But don't get me wrong, I'm sure there were plenty of things they would have preferred not get out, but there are also some things I'm sure they were happy to share. For instance, revealing that Akbar and Nien Nunb were in the movie didn't hurt the theatrical experience for anyone, and it got a lot of the core fan base excited.

It's also a pretty successful practice to trade information in exchange for agreements to sit on other more spoilery bits.

There is value for the studio in some spoilers - just not to level we saw with TFA.
