SPECULATION Why Luke Skywalker has to have had a child.

    Once Luke dies the Skywalker name will be dead. The most recognizable last name in the galaxy will no longer be available for future writers and directors of Star Wars to use. Yes Leia and any children she has will have skywalker blood but they would have the last name Solo or Organa not Skywalker. From a business standpoint this is basically burning money. Yes I know what George Lucas said about Luke not having any children, guess what Lucas said a lot of things including denying that this trilogy would ever exist. Lucas is very fickle and he is no longer in charge of the universe.

    Anyways I don't see Lucasfilm or Disney not having the Skywalker name live on.

    Good point. Lucas did once respond to someone saying "Luke never gets the girl" by replying "you haven't seen the sequels" (or something).
    I think there is a good chance Luke got married and had a kid.

    Although I didn't like the character Ben Skywalker in the EU, he was sort of like a star wars Wesley Crusher on steroids, I loved the idea of Luke naming his son Ben.

    Hm. I'm strongly in the "Luke has no kids" camp but I have to admit this is a great point you're making. Strong enough to make me question the possibility again. Excellent point.

    I totally understand where people are coming from with the argument that Luke as a Jedi should not have offspring the prequel trilogy made that clear. But the writers can find a workaround, maybe he had a one night stand, I believe Jedi aren't forbidden to have sex otherwise who would want to be a jedi amiright? ;) They just can't form attachments. Anyways when it comes to canon vs. business, business always wins.

    Kylo Organa-Solo disowned for being a traitor takes the name Skywalker and has kids.

    Finn who was raised to fight and has no name but FN#### takes the name Skywalker in homage to mentor.

    I believe they're going to eventually move away from the Skywalker focus. I think there will always be a Skywalker, but I'm hoping this new trilogy plants the seeds for another family, like Finn and Rey's kids (If they become an item) I think the fate of the galaxy ALWAYS depending on a Skywalker is going to get old, and make the universe seem extremely small. Unless ofcourse they keep coming up with ways to tie things back and it makes sense storywise.

    I'm always a little wary of celibate men. Some may be fine but we're all aware of the dangers when virgin/celibate men combine with a 'religious order'.

    I wonder who's more dangerous - a Jedi attached to partner and offspring, or a celibate (ignorant and grumpy?) religious zealot who has other family attachments anyways?

    I say give Luke some love.

    First idea doesn't make a lot of sense if Kylo pissed of his parents so much they don't want him using their last name I doubt Luke would be thrilled with Kylo taking the name skywalker. As for Finn that is an original idea, although I think its unlikely.I think finn will get together with rey and adopt the name Solo. Especially if he gets the Falcon as ibelieve one of the rumors says.

    It still leaves us with the issue that if the jedi don't have children we won't have a solo or a skywalker in another generation. And unless this trilogy bombs and even if it does we are going to have star wars films for a long time to come.

    Why would Kylo after going to the Dark Side and trying to destroy his parents legacy give a crap what his Uncle Luke thought. Its Anakin Skywalker's helmet he holds when he caresses the Vader Helm. He picks it he uses it as a will to power. Just tossing possibilities.

    I assumed you meant he was redeemed in the previous post. If he's not redeemed then he's gonna die so the problem I mentioned in the OP would still remain.

    And don't forget the violence perpetrated by the other infamous virgins with strong ideas of a religious order - luckily for SW fans there is no evidence of a virgin filled Paradise for force ghosts!

    I would love to see a turn from the patriarchal SW mythology to a strong mother/daughter story - if only for a breath of fresh air. There must be some epic matriarchal mythologies to draw on for the ST.

    That's right, there was a rumor like that.. But he is not a pilot, as evidenced by that running with Rey clip.. Wouldn't it make more sense for Rey to get the Falcon?

    I wouldn't be surprised if all the new characters are Luke's kids...The guy was likely looked at like a mega superstar across the galaxy after ROTJ. He's not ugly, he probably could have had just about any lady/alien/droid he wanted...and given his emotional nature...he likely had his fill and didn't bother with protection either cause you know...he has the force and is a jedi and is also a man that can't resist that level of temptation.

    He would have had so many cool/corny pick up lines at his disposal.
