I finally get it. We're not Disney, we're fans. Disney is an entertainment company, we're spectators.

Disney isn't gonna stop after episode IX, there will be ep X, XI, XII, XVII, XXI and as long as possible.

Rey is 20. In 10 years, there will be 5 episodes with Rey, The Lucas era is over. Star Wars is not gonna be Anakin's story, Not Luke's. 20 years from now in the future, Rey will be the hero of Star Wars still. Daisy Ridley will be 40 and there could be 10 episodes with Rey. Star Wars is Rey's story.

That's why they took an unknown actress because their carreer plan is to make her Rey ( and I think it's contractual ) for manyyyyy years to come. In Ep XVII, it will still be Rey against ... who knows and kids and future generations will know Star Wars as the story of Rey.

That's why they don't put Luke in, he was too important and they didn't want him to be the hero, he will pass the lead to Rey for the rest of the saga. He will be known as the old wise guy who kept the jedi spirit alive but the Mark Hamill's era have been missed by Lucas between 1983 and 2016.

That's why there is kind of reboot taste in TFA, it's because the lead and the story has changed and Star Wars is now Rey's story for years to come. And if she's the hero of the story to come, she's indeed the chosen one.

Other details are not that relevant in a very long term which is the Disney's businessplan for Star Wars.

The how and where are gonna come later but in 5 episodes from now only old fans like we are will keep talking about it.

I agree with you on the reboot feeling. I don't think that Rey is the chosen one. Rey may use the power of the chosen one through the force to help her and/or she's simply naturally gifted .

Disney will kill the Skywalker thing at the end of ep IX with the death of Kylo Ren. Then, they will get into their business plan for Star Wars. Make a total whole new universe with Star Wars things but aside of Lucas ideas. And rewrite the story of the chosen one is a part of their plan. They'll explain it because they are story tellers and they know what they do.

We'll be leaded during this trilogy to another Star Wars era and start a brand new one at Ep X.

While I agree that Rey willl play a prominent role in future installments of Star Wars (beyond 7, 8 and 9) along with Finn and hopefully Poe, but the franchise is unlikely to center on any of them exclusively for episodes 10, 11, and 12 and beyond. They will constantly introduce new characters and one day the old Jedi, will give way to the new Jedi, and old villains will give way to the new ones.

In the OT a chosen one never existed. When Lucas created the PT, which is the backstory of Vader, the big reveal of Vader being Lukes father in TESB no longer exist for new fans who would watch them in order. So he needed a new swerve. Thus the prophecy was created. New fans watch Anakin become Vader and the prophecy misread must be. Vader tells Luke he is his father which we already know and begin to think its Luke that is the chosen one.

Enter new swerve Lucas needed. Vader turns to the light at the last moment and destroys the last of the Sith fulfilling the prophecy as the chosen one.

Lucas confirmed as much. BUT we see in my example how things can change in TGFFA by simply adding another film that rewrites the truth.

What we are learning in short, nothing said in the past is canon until the saga is complete so get ready for a ride. Anything is possible. If Disney wants to they could make OB1 Luke and Leas real father with 1 simple minute of backstory.

Rey the chosen one? Who knows? One director could say yes and the next director change it. Ask Lucas who the chosen one is or ... was.

As much as I love Star Wars, I think all things have to come to end:( TFA was amazing no doubt! And so will the next movies hopefully. I just think after this trilogy, they will run out of room to come up with new ideas. People are already worried that this trilogy is going to mirror the originals. Just imagine if the trilogy after this one mirrors both! It hurts to say it but they should stop after IX and just make anthology films.

From a certain point of view, it's George Lucas's fault. Had he continued with the sequels 10-15 years later rather than doing the PT... lol.

I don't know if Rey will be the chosen one, but what I reckon is that it all will depend on the public feedback regarding the new movies and the anthologies. If the perspective after Episode IX is sort of lukewarm, they might need to re-phrase that marketing plan.

Disney is staffed by fans. They are not going to piss on the fact that Vader the biggest selling character of all time is the chosen one. Rey is going to be important and will be pulled in to the story as part of the ongoing legacy.

i think too much emphasis is put on the "chosen one". and not just because i feel like the PT made too many such pronouncements that are problematic in reconciling with the OT.

in his own way, Luke was also the chosen one ~ had it not been for him, Vader would not have turned.

Rey may be the new chosen one. or Rey/Ben may be the chosen ones.

i feel like the Force is always in need of balance. it's not a one-and-done deal, it's an ongoing process.

God, I hope they don't make Rey the "real Chosen One". That kind of rewriting of the Saga would really annoy me to no end. I'm already annoyed by this last movie.

I have no doubt Disney will do everything possible to keep Star Wars in active development in all forms (films, books, comics, toys, etc.). It's potential has hardly been exhausted.

I do offer one potential way Disney could bring Star Wars to some point of resolution with regards to the Skywalker saga - and yet leave room for continuation - as I describe in these two posts:

Lukes New JEDI Code (my first post in that thread)

Lukes New JEDI Code (my second post in that thread)

I include one more possibility in a response to another thread: What should episode 9, 10 and 11 be about?.

All of this can be done by preserving Anakin as the One. Anakin did bring balance to the Force in the end. Lucas said it himself, and I accept that.

But there can be other Ones: consider the character Neo of The Matrix.

The Force could, at various intervals, summon, inspire, or (if Qui-Gon Jinn was correct about his hypothesis regarding Anakin's birth) literally create a new One when circumstances require someone of extraordinary Force abilities to step in to help restore the balance.

Interesting in that Neo (taking the Oracle's "unbalanced" comments into consideration) is regarded by Agents as the Anomaly. Neo is the one thing the Architect cannot eliminate from the equation he is trying to balance. So, enter Smith, Neo's negative.

Before Neo died and was reborn in the first film, he was not the One. It was only when he reawakened that he became the One and overcame the agents at the end of the first film.

I see the same with regards to the Prophecy of the One and Anakin: once Anakin became Vader, the prophecy seemed doomed or at least "misread" as Yoda wondered. It was only when Luke Skywalker reawakened his father's identity and expressed hope and compassion that Vader could turn from the Dark Side, embrace the Light once again, return to himself as Anakin Skywalker, and finally fullfill his much-awaited role as the One.

And just as The Matrix is revealed, to Neo, to have several previous iterations, each time being destroyed and created nearly anew, it is entirely possible, given the established range of creative possibilities within the Star Wars universe that there can in fact be Ones -- plural -- who periodically exist to help do the Light side of the Force's bidding.

Rey could be simply the New One. One of many charged by the Force to keep the Dark Side from progressing too far.

I don't think it has anything to do with business plans. It's a bit risky. Daisy Ridley only signed for the next movie, and presumably IX. They will make her the chosen one because they want to conclude the skywalker saga with IX. She needs to be special in order to provide satisfying closure which ties up all the actions of the previous Skywalkers.

There might be a standalone with Rey as a full fledged Jedi, I cannot imagine them expending the Skywalker saga beyond 9. That was never their intent.

Besides, Disney does not interfere with the story of Rey and the sequels. They do marketing and give cash. They do nothing else. It's Lucasfilm which pulls the story strings. So any argument on the basis that "Disney makes this or that story choice because they want to make a mountain of money" is false and abject. Did Lucasfilm do that? Lucas really made a mountain of money, but did he change the story so he could make more cash? No

I understand this is a typical American sentiment: "if it makes money it must be corrupt". That is why americans are so inclined to call something like a saga a franchise or IP or any other business terminology. Just imagine if Homer would have written his work at this particular time in the USA. Would you have called Homer's stories an IP or franchise?

Rey will be the centre of this new trilogy, and maybe even the next one, that's for sure, but don't think they'll make her the real chosen one, the main character doesn't have to be "the chosen one" to make something great, or they'll have to retcon "the chosen one" every time a new hero shows up.
I really didn't like the concept of the chosen one in the first place (it seemed to me just a simple way to make anakin important with no effort, and a way to make the prequel trilogy important diminishing the events of the first trilogy, because they were afraid that the prequels weren't going to be as relevant as the first one), but I managed to accept it, so I actually hope they won't even talk about it in the future movies.
If they really want to mention it in this trilogy, they could make Luke discover it in the first jedi temple, finding out that the "chosen one" is reffered actually to all the jedi order, because, as Lor San Tekka said in this movie, without the jedi there is no balance in the force.
In this way the jedi will have the role of guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy once again (and maybe forever) ;)

For me it should not be altered that Anskin brought balance in ROTJ. If that changes then it really diminishes Darth Vader and stops him being at the centre of the saga.

Never is it said that the balance can't be disrupted again. I believe that by simply saying the Force has been pushed out of balance by the FO it keeps both Anakin's legacy in tact but also keeps it relevant. What I mean by the latter is that essentially the FO rising again is down to Vader. His actions resulted in Sidious being able to become Emperor. So now, in spite of the balance being restored in ROTJ, Anakin's kids and the new heroes must find a way to truly defeat the evil that Vader was responsible for and has emerged again, bringing with it despair and suffering.

The new trilogy can then focus on what Lucas originally set out - the business of truly restoring the Republic and bringing lasting piece.

Is Rey the new chosen one? This brings up many questions:

If the Force is out of balance again and if Anakin was created by the Force to balance it out, surely the same thing would happen again?

    Or

Perhaps as Luke is still around the Force already has a being capable of bringing balance. Maybe it just awakens in Rey so she would be the catalyst to then get Luke to join the fight?

    Or

Anakin was created by Plagueis and wasn't in fact some miraculous conception. If this is the case then Rey is simply a "nobody" who has been born with great power and is thrust onto the galactic stage.

    Or

Rey is a chosen one of sorts but with a different origin story to Anakin. She wasn't born with her super dooper powers but "injected" with them by the awakening Force.

    Or

Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin. The Force energy that was of the chosen one is now in her. Both the light and the dark. She has to right Anakin's wrongs and find a way to peacefully destroy Snoke and the FO to bring a lasting balance...

    Or

Rey is the latest creation of Darth Plagueis.

After 10 new movies and 15 years from now. I don't think people will still think about Anakin or that any new guy will find a link to the Lucas Era.

ACDC survived the death of Bon Scott.

But if you take away Anakin being the chosen one then you render the main story of the PT a joke.
Now many might say that it already is and that the PT should be separated. I disagree.
