I still would have liked to see whatever the "red screen" scene was....the one with his reflection in the floor leading up to it. Such an awesome buildup that would have been.

my brother lauds the "guerilla marketing" on R1: so much of the trailers never happened!
it's a shame we lost some beautiful shots, but i like the idea that Vader is there, watching.
and we know it because of the trailer even if we never see it in the film ~ ha!

Ew. I love to pretend AOTC was just a optional background material for The Clone Wars LOL.

I'd rather have a coherent narrative than just fitting in some nice images.

Star Wars fans can be very nitpicky and annoying. I love them and hate them all at the same time. I shivered when both the TFA and Rogue One cast expressed the hope in various panels that they really hope the fans like them (in fact both Felicity Jones and Daisy Ridley said the same thing!). They know what happened with the prequel cast. Its a shame really.

    Exactly!

Vader's scene where purely functional. The first was used to help characterize Krennic, the second was to literally tie Rogue One to a New Hope (even though that last scene reeked of fan service!). Just imagine the screenplay.
    - "Jyn and Cassian embrace and fade in a blinding light"
    - "Vader comes in and murders some people"
    I loved it though......

Vader would have really distracted from the main plot and the new characters. A villain is not really menacing when you know he'll survive the movie anyway. Just imagine scenes with Vader going against the Rogue One crew. They would be spoiled from the moment Vader entered the scene: in that case the movie would really suffer from prequelism.

Lol I accept the prequels and love the actors anyway. In my opinion most of the problems with them relied on execution, but it is what it is and we have to live with it. Actually, watching TCW helped me to come to terms with the PT.

Whenever I see the prequels I only think of Ford's famous comment: "George, you can type this sh*t, but you can't say it!" or when I listen to the audio commentary and try to count the number of times Lucas' points out things that are "fake" in his prequel movies.. I see the actors as victims nowadays.

I was watching ROTS on Friday before Rogue One (Saturday), and I have to say that Hayden Christensen's performance held up better than I had remembered. Certain lines were still uniformly awful ("Thank you" in response to being dubbed Darth Vader, "You're so beautiful" to Padme, "From my point of view the Jedi are evil!"), but it was more solid just watching the movie straight through than I had remembered.

They handled Vader well. If they went to town with Vader.. then it would have overshadowed A New Hope.

I'm alright with Darth Vader being in this film. He fits in with the timeline and would have been involved with safeguarding the Empires most secret and deadly project. Go out with a big bang, it may be the last time we see Vader on the big screen. . . .
    ;)

I think you want Lords of the Sith made into a movie.

Actually, I too was puzzled to see Vader so ruthless and efficient in that corridor... However, I think it can still fit well with ANH: after the hot pursuit and carnage, Vader got pissed off (and maybe exhausted), and just let his stormtroopers do the dirty job at the beginning of ANH, which can leave us to the guilty pleasure of his "grand entrance" :) And anyway like all big bosses you don't get into the mêlée to slaughter any petty footsoldiers all the time. So maybe a bit OTT, but still not such a bad link to the OT, imo.

Personally, I really liked the space Varys'/Littlefinger relationship that Tarkin and Krennic had. I think it makes a lot of sense to have Tarkin in the film- honestly, more so than it would than to have the Emperor. I really hope we don't see Palps ever again, to be honest. The fact that he's this insidious phantom threat (see what I did there?) in the prequels and then disappears until ROTJ actually adds to his character, for me.

I agree and I think that is the root of some of the issues people are having with the new movies... including the prequels. I'm not saying any of the movies are totally perfect in any way though. We as a fan base went for sooo long without a new movie up until TPM. We didn't even know we would get anything after the OT. The EU grew to be soooo big and had many amazing, great novels, trilogies, and long book arcs; and we read them. It was all we had. We used them to formulate in our own minds what a new movie might would be about or which book would be a good movie with our favorite characters. I personally loved the NJO and always thought they would make good movies. Now that we are getting new movies, I think they are not living up to match what some people have built up in their minds. People nitpick based on what they had imagined. They may not have the characters that some fans have personally grown to love or the same action that was in a particular book. We really need to set aside what we learned in the EU. I think some would like the new movies better if the preconceived notions and ideas could be put to the side and give the creativity of those making these movies a chance and enjoy them for what they are Enjoy the fact that we now have Star Wars on the big screen again.

I totally understand what the OP is saying about Lords of the Sith. It would be interesting but I think that would be a different movie in and of itself. It's not the intentions of RO. RO is about the unsung heroes of the rebellion that you have vaguely heard about. Its all about them, more Vader would have made the movie about him and taken the spotlight away from the intended characters. Certainly, Vader and Tarkin had actions related to Death Star as was shown in ANH. I feel they had the right amount of screen time that didn't feel forced and added to the story in a meaningful way. Vader showed his badassness and why everyone feared him. No grips out of me!
