Even before Interdictors were introduced the film seemed to be saying that the Rebels did lack the ability to escape. Either that or the Imperials were once again over-confident. We can go back and chalk that up to Interdictors perhaps, though I don't really think it's necessary as the ambush itself was reason enough for many years. Maybe there were Interdictors there and if so it's possible the Rebels just didn't notice them in the confusion. By the time they closed in with the capital ships the decision had already been made to fight it out.

I guess it was a make it or break it kind of situation. They could either go out with a bang (literally) or Vader would have slowly hunted them down one by one

Yep it was golden opportunity to take the fight to the empire or die trying.

You may just as well ask why a General (Taggi) is commander-in-chief of the Imperial Starfleet in ANH. Apparently there wasn't originally a distinction between "army" and "navy" (just the Imperial Forces) because space is an analogy for our oceans and the fighting soldiers were marines.

Admiral Ackbar was in charge to make the decisions at Endor but he listened to the counter-proposals of his General Calrissian.

If the battle aborted the second death star would've went on a planet destroying rampage across the galaxy until no planet could harbour them.

    1. It was aborted. Lando said "Pull up, the shields are still up. Break off the attack!"

    2. But they re-engaged after the DS2 shield was deactivated, because they knew that a fully functioning DS2 primary weapon would wipe out not only the Forest Moon, the assembled Rebel fleet, but also any further future chance of another attack. It was both a brave and desperate attack, which probably couldn't have been tried again in the near future if they had failed.

Maybe because the rebellion had so much faith in their heroes on the ground of the forrest moon of endor. They trusted that Han and Leia and the rest could destroy that Sheild. They could only hope at that point. And, after all, rebellions are built on hope. Also, during this event, they couldn’t pass on an opportunity to end the empire with the emperor on board and all. It also could have been a fight or go home type battle too.
