That's a good point. I think the only way JJ can really screw up is if IX subverts VIII, but not in a way that brings it back to TFA. If he did that, each film would feel totally disconnected.

I like of him turning TLJ into a bit of a misdirect, and bring TFA's setups back into the fold- as long as and only if it feels like a natural transition, and not like a tug of war between directors.

Meh...to each their own. I haven't seen black panther nor I plan to.
Guys in spandex with long fingernails and cat ears strangely do nothing for me.
Catwoman on the other hand, meoooow

The biggest expectation is the continuation of the Skywalker legacy and bloodline. Kylo is a Skywalker, being the son of Leia, who shows she does and has used the force. Rey is not a Skywalker her family are nobodies. Kylo did not lie to her. Funny how only good guys lie in these movies. Luke lies finn lies, but Kylo tells the truth to Rey. At any rate, the only option to continue the saga is to redeem Kylo or turn rey to the darkside, which I don't think would ever happen. Not because it can't but because they wouldn't go that route.

I don't mind if "Episode IX" subvert expectations. I just hope it does with better writing, and at the same time, fix Rian Johnson's mess.

I don't give a rat's ass about Kylo Ren. And as far as I'm concerned, the Skywalker Legacy consists of Episodes I to VI. Nothing else.

I'm not sure how IX can subvert expectations, because I don't think there really are expectations. Leaving TFA, there were a lot of things that had to happen in the next two films--we had to learn about Rey, about Snoke, about Luke, etc. But after TLJ, with those questions answered or subverted, I feel like the saga can go anywhere.

I mean, aside from Rey and Kylo having another duel, is there anything that HAS TO happen in the next movie? Are there any expectations left to subvert?

I think we may need to see the film before we know how our expectations could even be subverted. For example, obviously we expect a big conflict to be between the FO and Resistance.

What if IX opens with a large final battle between the FO and Resistance, before another power emerges (as a placeholder, the Chiss) and the rest of the film sees the two factions fighting a common enemy?

Probably not likely, but that's the point- despite the fact that there aren't as many fan theories around now, we definitely still have some expectations.

The Skywalker saga storyline has to be it for me. I need to see what happens with Ben as a primary driver for the film. I know Rey's story is important too but I will lose much interest if It all comes down to her interests in the end.

Aw, hell no!! There's so many reasons why it's not perfect that I won't even get into that now. I will say that if that doesn't happen, there's going to be one ticked off Reylo fan base. They've got some big ideas on what's going to happen next. The internet may explode!:p

Apparently "If X doesn't happen, there's gonna be one ticked off X fanbase" is a pretty wide claim we can make about anything these days. :p

Didn't you watch Rainy Johnston's drivel of a movie?

The Resistance is dead. Long live the new 'Rebel Alliance'. They were quite clear on this point as they packed like the 20 remaining folks into the Millenium Falcon.

Oh, I know! However, with all the fan fiction and really BIG ideas about where it's going with Reylo, the reaction will be something to behold if it doesn't go the way some want. This will be ugly!!:D

I like TLJ, not as much as TFA but I respect the decisions they made in the story.
Why? Beacuse these guys at least have the balls to take some risk and shake things up a bit.

Otherwise the franschise would end up like Marvel movies - boring, predictable, generic and bland. That's why all of the Marvel fans are pretty much always happy - because they are served with what they want and all they get is a forgettable movie because writers don't like to take risks.

It's the same thing in music. I always liked the bands that changed their sound, evolved and gave us something new. Those kind of bands have a fan base in which everyone love a certain album. That's the same with us SW fans. Somebody like OT, somebody like PT, and somebody likes ST.

That is the main and biggest value of SW franchise - everybody can find something they can relate to and like in that universe.

Just to be fair, I'd say the most subversive Marvel movie is Civil War (by far) and also the best in my opinion.
