When I was a kid I assumed the Jedi in Return of the Jedi was Luke. Later on I questioned if George meant Jedi to be plural, meaning, the return of the Jedi as a collective, like they're back since Luke became a Jedi and the only alive Jedi left in ROTJ. Now I see that it can be Anakin the Jedi to have returned as well. I guess it's left open to interpretation, or has the precise meaning been officially stated somewhere?

That's totally possible in my view, as well. They meet in the middle, whatever that may mean. The extremes approach themselves, Rey becomes semi-light, and Ben becomes semi-dark, and then they meet in, balance? That's the whole grey Jedi thing, but maybe it doesn't need to be Jedi at all. After all, the last title was "The Last Jedi". Of course, last may or may not mean final. Lots of good and viable possibilities here. My suggestion, and that's what I'll try to do myself, is to keep the mind open to whatever scenario JJ and co will present. As long as it's well done, I'll be willing to accept whatever outcome. Well done meaning well executed.

I think a lot of persons (including me, of course) start thinking like you : in RotJ, Luke comes back to save his friends because he is a Jedi now. So "the return of the Jedi" is (seemingly) obviously "Luke comes back and now he is a Jedi"
But... a "return" implies a previous "departure"... right? Has "Jedi Luke" already left once? The anwser is no, mainly because in ESB he wasn't a Jedi yet.
So I assume the only very Jedi who has previously left, and returns now, is Anakin. The main hint to that, is that Hayden Christensen's face who pops up as a forceghost by the end of Episode 6.

    I don't think so.

Yep, but Grey Jedi are EU. They should become canon now.

I don't want balance.. we got no movies if we finally get balance lol :D

i actually care more about Ben Solo finding comfort/solace with whatever he decides to do.. than the force balancing or the FO being defeated etc.

he told us in TFA that he felt like he was being torn apart. however things turn out and whatever he chooses to do next.. i'd like to see a smile on the kids face before the end of the trilogy.

I still don't know what grey jedi/middle ground is supposed to look like.
Someone who sometimes kills people in rage but not too much to become dark. Someone who longs for power, but not to much, so he doesn't become dark?
Or a jedi allowing himself to have his feelings control him, but not too much so he doesn't get dark?

You're right, return would imply departure, in the strict sense, which Luke hadn't done obviously. However, remember that it can be Jedi in the plural sense as well, as in "the Jedi order" way. By becoming an active Jedi, Luke has caused the Jedi to return to scene after being erradicated or forced to exile after the events of episode II. And, at the end of ROTJ, both the Jedi as a whole and Anakin have returned to scene. And while not making complete strict sense, from a certain point a view, Luke really is returning in VI, like "coming back", to save his friends. So, I guess it's still left to interpretation.

If you ask Google, this is what you get by the way :) For what's worth.

Question "what does return of the jedi mean".
So, it seems that there's even a fourth option: "Luke's returns to face Vader again" :)

\Edit: By the way, the original title set by George was "Revenge of the Jedi". So, it seems that he was going after the Jedi order coming back to scene and destroy the Sith.

Oh, ok, so it's a thing already, at least in the EU. Thanks for the info.

    that's correct.

yes, and that tends to make us think the Jedi is back to fight, so clearly, it's Luke...
    .... but...
.... it also could be "the whole Jedi order comes back to take his revenge on the Sith, who swept them off" :) :) :)

ah ah ah ! we have not finished discussing yet :) :) :) :)

My take would be using the Force in ways forbidden by the Jedi council. Whereas Jedi and Sith view certain uses of the Force as light and dark, a Grey Jedi would see the deed done with said use as being the determining factor, not so much the power used. Possibly also where your mind is at while using that power.

My personal view on Grey Jedi is a spiritual person who does not feel bound by Religious codes, rules, laws or guidelines. Less of an order of themselves, more freelancers with education in these things. That's why grey is vague, as some may be lightly shaded, others darker, depending on their interpretation.

I honestly don't know...I think it's too soon unless there's a fair time jump between VIII and IX, but even them i'm not sure.

    That being said, and ESPECIALLY after what he's already done, there only two possible scenarios to his "redemption";

    1. Like Vader did, he just suddenly chooses to sacrifice himself in the name of what's right and just (whatever that may be), and then dies, OR...

    2. Not unlike #1, he will do (without explanation) something to destroy the FO, and then burdened with his actions and humiliation, and broken by the weight of his past choices, will walk away and go into seclusion just like Luke, Obi-Wan, and Yoda did, but not totally to hide, but moreso to come to terms with what he's done.....and we will see him sometime in the next trilogy as a wisened and sad recluse.

I actually think Rey is Grey. Her moral code is perfectly sound and she doesn’t need to tap into apatheia to win her battles... at least she hasn’t so far.

I somewhat feel the same way...she's almost (or at least I envision that she could EASILY be) liken to a female Qui-Gon Jinn. The REASONING behind that belief is primarily because she has no other Jedi to gain reference from. Ok, yes there's FG's Luke and potentially Yoda to guide her, but she's VERY strong willed (as we've seen) and knowing where she belongs in the Force (on the light side) might make it easy for her to use the Force from both sides in order to "get the job done".

If he hadn't of slaughtered his own father in cold blood, then I could see a path to redemption for him. However, since he murdered his father, I don't see it truly happening. I can't see any way for him to atone for that. Not even Vader killed his own blood. Unless there's some seriously creative writing or Han isn't really dead, then I don't see a convincing redemption arc. However, that doesn't mean that the writers won't try it.

Cold blood? He struggled very much and almost didn't do it. That's not "in cold blood"...

Han (Leia and Luke too) wanted him to get redeemed and that's all what matters. He can kill dozen more family members, as long as the in universe characters want him to come back, he will come back.

Kylo Ren is trouble by childhood daddy issues (aren't we all) and I don't see why he can't come around if got a good therapist to work through those issues. But since this is Star Wars, maybe Rey (or Leia, or Ghost Luke) would get through to him in the end. I would also really help if he got betrayed by someone like general Hux.

Wow, really? He can murder all the family members he wants, but as long as those characters wanted him to turn back and he eventually does turn, no biggie on killing family members? Good luck selling an audience on that ideology.

What's a better message for children? Forgiveness or punishment/death? Exactly, forgiveness. Most people already are sold btw. Reylo is the most popular theory out there and this only works with a redeemed Ben Solo.

Ah, I see now. My initial post is based on what has actually happened onscreen, while your reaction is based on head cannon, wishful thinking and what works best for your "ship." This wasn't even about Reylo, but it sure seems that pointing out that Kylo is the villain who has committed awful deeds is the best way to start an argument with their supporters, even if you weren't trying.

I answered I don’t know. I do think he may be redeemed because SW has been about redemption. The issue then becomes how do they do it to make it seem unique. That I also don’t know either. I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
