Naturally IX has the potential to be the best of the ST. It can do it if it can create the vibe and nostalgia that TFA created while being different from a story standpoint. Keep the story moving forward without trying to retcon what has already happened and not repeat to many story beats from the OT.

It could be the best of the series. Hopefully it will be. Unfortunately mark H said his screen time is very small in ep. 9. Can’t wait to finally go see a Star Wars movie in the theaters again. Unfortunately it won’t be until the next saga starts...

Is that confirmed? That would be unfortunate if he just gets one Force Ghost scene at the end with Rey.

But unfortunately it would be consistent with past movies. Force Ghost appearances are usually (for lack of a better term) cameos.

I doubt that Episode 9 is better than TFA but I think it can be better than TLJ
Although it is not very difficult to overcome TLJ in terms of quality

I think that they have a great new writer in Chris Terrio and the final film of the Skywalker saga won't be as bogged down in nostalgia as when Kasdan was writing TFA. This could help or hinder the overall feeling for a lot of fans, but I think JJ and Terrio have come up with a plan to make fans of all 9 films mostly happy with an overarching story that will blow our socks off regardless. It will definitely feel closer to TFA in terms of styling, but JJ always finds a way to surprise his fans and I am very glad he has waited to release a title for the film and make us wait. We will all be lined up on December 19 for opening night and I can't wait to see what's in store. It will have nostalgic moments sprinkled in (Lando back in the Falcon, our trio for the trilogy together for once, and some good old fashion R2 and Threepio moments with BB-8 mixed in with his little new droid pal). I think we will have an overall better feel for the film once April 12 gets here and we get that first glimpse at some photos and the trailer.

I don’t think we can draw too much from this article.
    1. This site is not the best source of SW news. Yes they are quoting Mark but they are then trying to infer what Mark is talking about IX. This site regularly references Mike Zeroh regularly so tread lightly
    2. Mark seems to be talking more about the past 2 movies than IX. He wasn’t really in TFA and by killing him off in TLJ his part in IX naturally became smaller as by being a Force ghost his part is going to be less than if he was a living Luke
    3. Fans all know that Luke is going to be a Force ghost thus limiting the role some. I’m not sure how this will make fans any less happy then they already were when Luke died

I expect Luke to have a small role in Episode 9, as you can't have a Force Ghost going around through the whole movie helping out Rey and the Resistance as it sort of cheapens it. I always took it that Force Ghosts were there to guide our Protagonists, as they usually get that once scene as Kenobi in the OT and Yoda in TLJ did.

Now I still expect them to market Luke as having a bigger role, as Lucas did that with Suited Vader in Episode 3 trailers. I was disappointed that we just got Suited Vader in the last 5 minutes of ROTS, and I expect that will be the same with Luke.

I think the key for Luke (for me) is how they end the movie and does it stick the landing. Will Luke be the final image of the Skywalker Saga? Possibly Rey/Leia (photoshopped) look out at Force Ghost Luke that sort of mirrors the ending of ROTJ? If Rey Nobody is the final image of the Skywalker Saga, than it will be sort of anti-climatic since she isn't a Skywalker/Solo.

Agreed 100%. When I first watched ESB I was jarred. It was so different in tone, style and story. Even the Characters seemed different. 38 years later, it is my favorite. After watching TFA I had it ranked right behind EBS. The anticipation of that movie over came my critical thought somewhat. Now I have TFA ranked after ESB, and RoTJ, as I find the TFA to be a bit more boring now after many viewings. To be fair, I also have the same criticism of ANH.

Expectations of a movie can effect your initial reaction and ranking of the film. But so can the Anticipation. Time is needed to properly rank each film in the Saga.

It was the same for me. When I first watched ESB, the characters didn't seem the same. Some aspects of it also didn't seem to fit with ANH, it was really a different kind of movie. ESB is not my favorite, I'd say RotJ is, but it does rank high up there for me.

I agree that we rate movies differently with time, so we shouldn't be too hasty in asserting definite rankings so soon. I now think I have a pretty good understanding of how I rate the PT and the OT, but I'm still not sure about TFA and TLJ, which is understandable since the ST isn't even over yet. And who knows, perhaps I may even revise a few things about the PT and OT after the Skywalker saga is complete.

I think JJ is a really smart man--- I think he'll give us a fair amount of fan-service while still breaking our preconceptions.

With that said, I think Episode IX will also make sense out of the trilogy for those who originally had problems with it.

ESB was a different animal for multiple reasons. First, nobody knew what a Trilogy was back in 1980 as the context of the movie being part 2 of 3 isn’t like today. Many people went into ESB in 1980 expecting another standalone story and were shocked/mad it had no ending, so the movie had a different context after 1983.

ESB also was a time when we couldn’t watch the movie at home for years as it didn’t come to HBO til 1985 and very few people had a VCR or Beta machine back then.

We all knew the PT and ST were 3 movies and they would come to DVD, Bluray and now streaming in the same year so it’s much easier to form an opinion of the movie compared to 1980 when it took years for home video release.

Yes Episode 9 may change the context of TFA and TLJ but I don’t think rankings may change much in 10 years compared to how ESB rankings changed in the early 90’s.

But this is the internet, where attention is garnered by making ridiculous and juvenile statements of an absolutely definitive and caustic nature! Therefore, I declare Episode IX to be not just the worst movie ever made, but the worst story ever told in any medium ever, even though it has not come out yet!!! ;)

JJ will save Star Wars and make it relevant again, just like he did with TFA.
