With Snoke dead, Hux a joke and Kylo having already been defeated by an inexperienced Rey, will there be a new villain in IX?

They could bring Snoke back but that would ruin one of the coolest twists of TLJ. Hux is the Jar Jar Binks of the sequel trilogy so no one can take him seriously. Then we have Kylo, Kylo spent years receiving Jedi training from Luke and dark side training from Snoke, yet he was still unable to defeat Rey who was completely new to this whole force thing. In TLJ he didn't show himself to be much better he seemed to be about as skilled as Rey when it came to fighting the Praetorian guard and of course she even ended up saving him at the end of the fight.

A Rey vs. Kylo showdown in IX would have no drama or sense of risk.

However bringing in a new villian at the very end of the trilogy would probably totally ruin the flow of the trilogy. What do you think they will do?

I mean I guess they could bring in a new villain, but maybe Kylo will gain more experience and become a much better leader and so fourth.

And I don't think Hux is the Jar-Jar of the ST.

Yeah but he is inevitably going to be defeated and we already saw that. If Darth Vader was defeated in Episode IV by farm boy Luke would you take him seriously? I mean the only shocking/interesting thing they could do with Kylo is if he actually beats Rey and takes over the galaxy. But this is Disney.

    I'm split.

    Maybe Snoke lives.
Darth Maul was killed in Episode 1 & Count Dooku was introduced.

Perhaps Darth Plagueis is the new villain, but I can't see him introduced for just 1 movie of a trilogy.
TLJ mostly ignored the Knights of Ren. I'm guessing JJ brings them back for Episode 9.

I don't think we need a new villain.

Both Darth Plagueis and Snoke are dead.

They had Kylo advance for a reason. He actually did what Vader didn't. (I will finish what you started).

Though the stage is set for Luke's ex students to return as the Knights of Ren.

I like the idea of Knights of Ren coming back victors from their gore filled and bounty full tours of duty from the four corners of the galaxy, sent out originally by their leader Snoke to snuff out the Resistance, only to find that their leader is dead, Kylo's gone crazy, and a power struggle begins. They find out quick that Kylo did the deed and there is a mixed reaction.

And these guys gotta be a mixed lot. Some devious and some idealists. The Seven Samurai.

I'm thinking they convince Kylo to try something different, go in a new direction and have a sort of Knights of the Ren-Table, a rule of rivals/equals. A mythical lore such as the Arthurian Legend meets The Usual Suspects.

Everyone is thinking about how to deal with the eventual death of Leia early on, but can anyone see what I'm saying that we contrapose that with the funeral of Snoke and the gathering of these chaotic good, chaotic neutral and chaotic evil forces?

It kinda has a medieval intertwined court intrigue to it I'm thinking. King Lear or Othello (w/ Rey as the bait) or something Tudor like or Shakespearian, idk, just spitballing. Can anybody help me develop this?

I hope the KOR return to fill the spot as villains. On of them should be the second main antagonist beside Kylo Ren.

JJ has publicly expressed an affinity for the KOR, and, with him directing the next film, there's a stronger possibility of them returning.

They could easily fill the spot currently left vacant by the Praetorian Guard.

I think this could also give Luke an interesting chance to address his former students, convincing them to reject the Dark Side, either to abandon Kylo or to stand with Rey against them.

I also think it could be a chance for them to resume Light Side pursuit of the Force as padawans under Rey's tutelage, and they, having experienced firsthand, the dangers of the Dark Side, could, once reformed and committed permanently to the Light, go on to be good Jedi.

I wouldn't get too excited about Knights of Ren. I find it very likely that they'll finally be shown onscreen, but their role will most likely be similar to what we saw from Deathtroopers and Praetorian Guards - they will look cool and will do something nice action-wise, but nothing else. And if we think of a character that's also a villain, then there's a chance, but the focus will most likely remain on Kylo and Hux (with a maybe a brief appearance from Phasma.) There's a reason why Snoke was killed.

Question: are the Knights of Ren loyal to the First Order or are they loyal to Kylo? Perhaps that's a distinction without a difference right now but it could be critical if Hux stages a coup later on.

    Well, okay.
Based off of your avatar, I take it take you are a fan of Jacen, right? Maybe in time, Kylo will be at his level because they are both the sons of Han and Leia in different continuities, after all.

How about Force possession of say...Hux? We’ve seen that the jedi Force ghosts can in fact interfere...what if there is something dead Snoke could do or even the spirit of Vader (not Anakin) in order I return?

I do agree that a Rey vs Kylo fight, as a climax, wouldn’t perhaps have the desired effect. Besides, I think they’ll be working together by then.

I reckon we'll see the rest of the Knights of Ren, and they'll be similar to the Inquisitors in Rebels.

Kylo may be our main villain, but we have a few elements in play that could go any number of ways.

We have tension between Kylo and Hux. Hux already showed that he would kill Kylo the first chance he had in TLJ. How long Kylo's willing to put up with this attitude is anyone's guess. I assume he must sense that Hux hates him. Hux in the EU has been portrayed as assassinating his father or something like that and taking power from him, and he made allies who could help him do this, I think, so we should be thinking about what kind of allies Hux might seek to help him destroy Kylo.

Hux might try ally himself another darksider. Perhaps one of the Knights of Ren who want power for themselves. Or maybe Hux, knowing that Snoke came from the Unknown Regions (assuming he did), will go there to find a new Snoke.

Alternatively, Hux might hire allies -- and this would be a way of working bounty hunters in, who we haven't seen much of yet in this trilogy.

Hux might also ally himself with the Rebels in order to kill Kylo. He would be able to leak information about Kylo's whereabouts as he travels or something, allowing the Rebels a chance to destroy him.

And I've said elsewhere that this tension between Kylo and Hux might erupt into a split empire, allowing the Rebels a chance to defeat both.

So I think these are the main sources of villainy in E9. And it will be interesting to see if either side of the Empire is portrayed as preferable to the other. Will one be more evil?

Finally we should wonder if Snoke had allies in the First Order or otherwise who will suspect Kylo's treachery and seek revenge.

Hux is nothing more than comic relief. I don't see him becoming anything more than another easy death.
